You're never going to please everyone when comparing the PC to the consoles. The PC isn't a specific system, results will vary wildly from user to user, and while they could attempt to cover a whole range of technical systems, from shitty laptops to bleeding edge, that's an enormous amount of work, and not one that would be justified by the hits the articles pull.
Yep. Personally I found that helpful.

Yeah, that one was a mess. Only reason it was a better choice than PC at all was because at the time it probably WOULD cost a decent bit to get a PC that ran it as well as the 360... then again you'd probably easily get a PC that ran it at a more stable FPS even if it wasn't as high or with as many features. Now, it's hard to imagine all but the cheapest of laptops or oldest of computers NOT being able to handle that game.

You know, one nice thing about this version is the ability to easily use surround sound. I haven't been able to get OG Doom 3 running in surround on any recent sound hardware. I've tried all of the different methods but it sticks to 2.0 stereo. While the gun sounds are crap everything else is pretty good and really shines in surround. Fantastic use of low frequency noise as well.

So not even the imp fireballs cast light anymore ?

Do you think going for 60fps was the right decision ?
The imp fireballs definitely have dynamic lighting.

Has anyone had problems with the controller support on the PC version? I load up the game and the controller works fine in the game select menu (where you pick Doom, Doom2, or Doom3) but then when a choose a game, the controller no longer works.

Check the control options in the game you are trying to use it in to see if there is a pad toggle?

I wonder if it's possible to use the same control scheme/config files used to allow gamepad support on the PC version of Doom3 on Quake 4. It would be great to be able to play the PC version without having to use Xpadder etc...

Got sikkmod + wulfen texture pack working, oh man. Looks excellent. It's mostly 60fps and playable at all times (30+) which is awesome, but performance wise I prefer BFG Edition's locked 60 with updated HUD.

This is the pack that worked for me after trying a few different ones (i'm on an AMD card):

You have to go to settings -> Controller and enable controller input. Only that first menu screen works on the controller until you do that, not sure why it would be disabled by default

Audizy 2 ZS here, 5.1 works great, but the sound side of the game was kinda (forced to be) sponsored by Creative (EAX etc) so it's no wonder it works out of the box.

@idBrianHarris Will the shadows casted by the flashlight in Vanilla DOOM 3 be patched into the PC Version of BFG Edition?

@Eternal_Wolf I can add a cvar for flashlight shadows but the position of the light makes them look bad.

Fair enough, perhaps the new position of the light makes them look weird.

@idBrianHarris Is it possible to put in Wulfen/Monoxead HD Textures using the console commands to extract/write .resources files? If so how?

@Eternal_Wolf the commands we used to package resource files are in the retail version. I suspect the code release will lead to easier tools

@michaellarabel @id_aa_carmack we have no plans to create a Linux version but I bet someone will port it once the code is released.

@dennisdryden @id_aa_carmack We removed the 360, PS3, Steam, & Bink code because we cant distribute their SDKs.

That sucks. I have this and it works out of the box. I wonder why.

EDIT: Try this
That's really bizarre. It simply did not work for me. I've tried those same commands. I spent the better part of an afternoon trying to get it working.

I am using a Xonar as well. Doom 3 claimed to be using surround but it did not actually make use of my rear channels.

EAX would be so awesome if it didn't muffle the guns and voices. The reverb is incredible but in most places way too overdone. For example if I grab a PDA in a cavernous area I can't make out the audio logs, and same with when Kelly talks to you. In smaller rooms voices are fine. I wish there was a way to tone it down, I love the effect.

This is a great package. Got the PS3 version and Doom 3 looks great and runs superbly. Really hard on Veteran, though!

I played the first few levels of the first Doom and it still holds up really well. Will probably play the whole thing through :)

I'm up to Alpha Labs 3 and loving playing this on my HMZs. i just slipped them off to be surprised by the bright sunshine i was apparently sat in for the last few hours. it's so nice to be able to lose myself in the world like never before. i've never been the biggest Doom 3 fan, but i always believed that 3D would really make it shine, and it really does.

all the debates about mods, and versions, and all that aside, i'm really happy with my purchase, and more eager than ever to get my Oculus. it's going to be an amazing ride with a motion tracking headset.

I've only played the game on the default hardness setting. I'll play on the tougher settings once I've completed a play though.

I take it there are a lot more demons etc... on veteran.

Figured out how to get triple buffering working with OpenGL games and an Nvidia card if anyone else was having trouble. Make sure you're forcing AA. It immediately started working once I did. I had the same issue with Bulletstorm and my AMD card in DX9. Weird.

I'm really looking forward to Oculus for the same reason. I'd love to be able to play this in deep 3D without having to black out my living room because of the 3D projector.

Hell. I could even play it in bed.

And I beat it again. Holy shit at the performance at the end there. I've been at 60fps since I started but the POM and lighting brought my system down to 18-24 fps at that last battle. Kinda like back in 2004 but prettier lol

The rebalancing in this is pretty interesting and more aggressive than I thought it was. I just got to a section in ROE where I was supposed to "Put on an environment suit" and go through some waste tunnels. I was looking around for the suit, but it wasn't there, and then it turned out that touching the waste didn't hurt me.

A quick google search later, and apparently in the original game you put on a helmet at this part and the whole waste tunnel used the oxygen loss mechanic. It was definitely easier without this. I'm not sure if it was better/less frustrating since I never finished original ROE, but at the very least it's interesting that the tweaking went beyond ammo and health pack counts.

The load times for the PS3 version look awful. This might be one of the few games I decide to download instead of buy on disc as the youtube vids show a vast improvement there.

Everything is godlike
The multiplayer is sooooooo god. Oldschool action a it's best. Corridor + 4 players + weapon spawns = fun fun fun
I also like that the stats screen only shows your kill score and not the number of deaths. I hate this K/D crap.
Please bring those oldschool shooters back

Game is still amazing. Is this a port of the Xbox version in terms of levels? I remember they "actioned" up that version, because they felt the PC version was too slow.

No, the Xbox version cut a ton of rooms and areas. This is the pc version modified.

I'm trying to buy 2004 Doom 3 on Steam and the only way is to buy a massive $99 pack.

Yep:

Sure, [GoG distributing the original version of Doom 3 is] a nice thought, but it's rather obvious that Bethesda are more or less, and for whatever reason, coercing digital customers into purchasing the BFG Edition. Right now, your only DD options are to purchase from Gamefly, which is US-only, or wait for the id Super Pack to go on sale, which happens twice a year and is a horrible value proposition if you're only after the original Doom 3.

Loving Doom 3. Such a pure shooter and the UI has never been bettered.

Plus, the atmosphere is so, so good. The enemies are pretty relentless (on Veteran anyway) and there is barely a single room where you're sure one won't appear at any moment. Feels really isolated, claustrophobic and tense.

I played the Xbox version way back in the day and there's definitely one area that stuck out, when you go outside briefly at the start, that wasn't there then. Is there a list of areas that were cut out of that version?

Too much to mention. They basically cut out all the optional areas of the game and rebalanced the enemies to fit within the more linear design.

It kinda sucks because the game teaches you that the optional areas are ripe with extra loot, but also feature some of the most challenging encounters, and these areas are also the most classic "Doom" in the entire game.

The "improved" lighting system really does clash with the complete lack of ambient occlusion.

Wow, that gif makes the BFG version look awesome. The contrast between the light and the dark areas looks great, unlike the original Doom 3, which just seems like varying shades of darkness.

Yeah I have to say I'm not sure why people are hating it, I've had ver little experience with vanilla D3, but that shit just looks DARK, not atmospheric in the least. I would much appreciate a visible game.

Just played to and finished
hell
yesterday and I'm still digging it. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. At least the 360 version is rock solid.

I agree about the mp, it's pretty awesome. Never finished vanilla D3 in the past (only played it at friends) so I am excited to do it now. Overall a good package.

I think they both look good, actually.

To be honest, the fact that this version looks a bit different actually adds to the value. I've played the shit out of Doom 3 and seeing it in a slightly different way has been enjoyable. It's not as if my original copy stopped working upon release of the BFG edition.

WTF is this shit. I'm paying on 360 everything is fine until I get to the communications maintenance area, then I start getting slowdown, I go up the lift a door opens and now I'm getting 2fps until the console freezes. I can reload earlier saves and the same thing happens over and over again. Has this occurred for anyone else? The game is literally unplayable at this point, I've never seen anything like this before.

@ID_AA_Carmack @idBrianHarris So if you guys are removing the Bink parts, what about the existing videos in the game? Or will it not matter since the GPL will mostly just be used for modding and such?

Thanks for pushing for this though!

@N_BONKERS_P @id_aa_carmack I am worried about that. It's unfortunate that the GPL code won't have videos but I don't know a good solution.

@idBrianHarris What new features(non game, engine related) does Doom 3 BFG have in it? Also is there a eta on release

@jmarshall2323 the sound system, UI system, network system, and threading model are all from Tech 5. Release as soon as we verify licenses.

@Eternal_Wolf I originally removed them for performance but then we realized it looked better.

^ about the flashlight shadows

Playing the 360 version as well and didn't have this problem.
