I got a brand new PS2 in 2009, I also have a library of 30+ decent games. I created one hell of a backlog.

The PS2 is a milestone in gaming that will never be forgotten.

RIP.

Definetly one of my favorite consoles ever. The amount of quality exclusives that thing had was amazing.

Neogaf:

The Next One game shop in Nabari's Twitter is reporting that production of PS2 is ceasing and anyone that wants to pick up one should before it's too late.

Just like PS1 production was stopped in March 2006, about 6 months before PS3 launch. Which mean PS4 should launch 2013 and not 2014. And another reason to believe that Sony didnt ship over 2 millions in last two quarters. More like 800k-900k at best o even less.

This is not official! (yet)

Apparently, the source of this news comes from the Twitter account of a game shop in Japan, but the tweet no longer exists.

Some sites saved the tweet. Translated into English, it reads: "It appears that the PS2 hardware has finally been discontinued. People who want one should purchase it before stock runs out."

If someone has any other source, please chime in.

SCE has not said anything about discontinuations of the PS2 yet, although it's entirely possible that they will announce it soon.

Ahh, thanks. It seems premature because hardware shipments have still been pretty good (~1 million last quarter).

There is nothing on Sony's twitter.

Also seems a bit premature. Japanese companies usually produce consoles as long as they sell, and PS2 still does. Hell, NES wasn't discontinued until 2003!

It must be fake because it still sells pretty well for a 12 year old console. Sony would have to be really stupid to not take cash like that just sitting on the table (although it wouldn't surprise me). Also how else would they prop up PS3 sales numbers lol.

Yep, posted about this in last week's Media Create thread. Didn't think it warranted a thread since it was just a report from a game shop and not anything official.

Lmao, no, they still MASS-produce a ton of PS2s in Argentina.

I don't think the NES was actually manufactured after 1994, though, Japan or elsewhere...

I'm pretty sure they actually did.

No matter what, PS2 is still selling to well for it to be killed off.

I'd heard that they had repair services and such, but the last new Famicom game was released in 1994. Maybe they had some token number of systems produced a year, but as they weren't making any new games for the system after '94, no way were they making lots of systems either.

That date makes much more sense for the SFC, of course, considering that that had new games in Japan until 2000.

I never had so much good memories with any console like I had with the PS2, I guess it was my generation's SNES.

Farewell my good friend, there won't be another PS2 :(

Other markets. An NES clone was the most popular console in Poland in mid-90s. I'd wager the actual NES might had been popular in third world territories/post-soviet republics for much longer than you could imagine.

Same goes for PS2. Apart from yearly sports games releases there hadn't been an actual new game on PS2 for years, had there? Yet it's still selling decently in primary territories (EU, JP, NA) and I suppose it's profitable to continue production for the third world.

A thousand guns salute !

Thanks ps2 for being my jrpg source during my highschool years, 2002-2007.

I'd like to buy one last brand new one, where can you get them in England? Nowhere sells them now. Would consider an import if they are easily moddable? Although saying that, 90% of my PS2 library is Japanese anyway.

Is that a trustworthy source? Apparently they posted it on November 4th. Why have I not been reading that anywhere else?
