Telltale's The Walking Dead - Story Discussion (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

That was a good episode. I like the game, but it's not the GotY material some of you are making it out to be.

I don't know if Season 2 is going to deal with the same characters, but I'd personally like it if Clem was the main character. Maybe have the game be set three or four years later and have the player play as a young teenage Clem. In any case, I want her to be a main character in whatever's coming.

Also, am I alone in thinking that Kenny could very well be alive ? We didn't see or hear him die. He could have very well made it out to the street.

I doubt it now though because it is possible that she died in episode 4...

I really hate that being the reason for all the good characters never appearing again or dying.

But who knows I guess. Season 2 is a way off. Maybe we'll get an email from her

Anyone elses first thought at the zombie ignoring Lee was "Oh shit, he's about to turn thats why its ignoring him" He didn't have that much zombie juice on him so i'm wondering if that was still a factor.

Just realized Lee ended his journey the same way it began, in handcuffs and with a dead cop.

Who knows, maybe with a bigger budget there will be more chances for characters who can live to get additional scenes in Season 2.

This has been the kind of experience that was so damn good I don't think I'll ever want to replay it, even though it's GOTY material. Especially because the story and characters were tailored to "my" experience. I don't want to know who says things differently if I make different choices. I made my choices, and the way it played out will stick with me forever. Very few games stick in my mind like that. Portal was one - that game is like 3 hours long but I'll never play it more than once because that first experience will always be stuck in my mind, like remembering a cool vacation I went on or a first date or something.

Shame about the usual Telltale... 'quirks'... wonder what'd be like with an AAA-sized budget.

Just finished it and frikkin' loved it. Also, does the post credit sequence change based on what advice you give to Clem? I told her to stay away from cities, so I assumed that was why she was in a field.

Good choice to keep that post-credits ambiguous. I sure hope it was Omid and Christa but I'm still left wondering.

A season 2 with a grown up Clem remembering what Lee taught her and the saves carrying on from season 1 would be interesting, but I don't know how feasible that is considering it would have to overtake the timeline of the comics for that to happen. I'd certainly be happy enough if we could just get a new group and leave Clem's fate unknown.

Anyways, the team at Telltale games deserves heaps of award for this series. Congrats to Jake, Sean and Gary for making such an awesome game!

I can't be the only one who had to double check the credits to make sure "the stranger" wasn't voiced by this guy:

jameswoods.jpg

James Woods: "I don't know LEE, what did you do. What did you do to James Woods?!"

Lee: "um...trapped you in a box with no airholes?"

James Woods: " Trapped me in a box with no airholes"

So far Myself and two of my roommates have finished the game and received the same scene.

Maybe it says something about me but I thought in the after credits sequence, when Clem finds a bullet, that she was going to use it on herself. Looked to me like she'd given up!

Was a good experience all round for me but really soured by some woeful technical issues on the PC. Real shame otherwise it would have been my GOTY.

I didn't get that vibe from her at all. She's just alone, and scared. Her expression was very telling of that.

And I don't know if it happened for anyone else, but at the beginning when you're climbing the ladder in the elevator shaft, it was lagging and chopping up far worse than any other point in the whole game. It actually caused me to miss a prompt to climb, and I fell to my death.

A few other thoughts:

The dialogue splicing in the attic with kenny was pretty terrible. Perhaps the single worst example of my suspension of disbelief breaking in the series. The way it was awkwardly crammed with cliffnotes of your relationship with him... just some really weird noticeable changes in voice tone throughout.

By comparison, the stranger rattling off all the bad things you did (from the other posts that seems to be what he was doing) seemed completely natural. Also it helped he only mentioned my group (not me) stealing the food, me killing some lady he vaugely refered to as "that woman" or something so I actually had no idea who he was referring to... and that's all I remember. Oh, and putting Clem in risk in general. I'm actually not sure how much that scene adapts to your choices because my Lee pretty much always took the morale highground regardless of its consequences.

I did enjoy that you were essentially teaching Clem how to play the video game she was in, though. "Clem, I need you to find an item. Anything. If you find it, you can use it. Alright, now rub that item against literally every other thing in the room. Great work!" I felt it was a kind of weird, light hearted moment in a pretty harrowing end scene.

I think it'd be neat for Season 2 to take place before / during the events of this season, as well as after. There's a lot of possibilities. You could play as / play with a group that had the Stranger in it, and see his decent into madness. Additionally you could see how Omid and Christa came to be where they are.

But, man. Walking Dead. Certainly one of the best games this year, and probably one of my favourite games of all time. Even with the weird all to occasional leaps of logic put in the storytelling to make sure the player can't fuck up, with some characters feeling kind of weird, with how so much of it was pure illusion of choice and not actual choice... even with all of that, it was still just a completely amazing thing to play.

Finished Episode 5. Felt it wrapped up things comfortably, had a nice emotional pay-off and was definitely an improvement over the nadir that was Episode 4. It was painful seeing Lee just wither away until Clem had to put a bullet in him. That illusion of choice though. Heavy Rain had smoke and mirrors, but at least in the second half and especially towards the end it had choices that mattered, that made a difference. This game's story has everything pretty much set in stone no matter what you choose to do, and once I realised that around Ep 3 or so, even more tension was lossed as a result. I could initially deal with the game over screen reducing much of the tension because I thought those big decisions early on would haunt me later, but nah, it scarcely amounts to anything in the end. Still, I enjoyed the ride. It peaked around Ep 2/3.

Got a glitch at the end on the choice screen where it just said stuff like "Title 1", "Title 2", without actually telling me what the specific choices were. That soured the episode for me. I did jot down the percentages though.

I told Clem that Omid and Christa were waiting at the train, what the heck was she doing in some random field at the end???

Just realized Lee ended his journey the same way it began, in handcuffs and with a dead cop.

And Clem bashing the head of a zombie in, the same way she saw you do it the very first time they met.

She remembered.

I'd be happy to never know what happened to Molly.
Allow me to decide for myself, I don't need it spelt out.

She was shot from a long distance by a sniper whilst trying to sneak around a settlement in bright orange clothing.

Finished it.

Felt shorter than all the episodes save maybe the first. Enjoyed it quite a bit. That ending ;_;

My Lee was pretty much a guy who always made sure that him and Clem would be put into the least amount of risk as possible. That is, let people who know who I am die up until episode three, where he became more more concerned about everyone else in the group. By episode 5, he pretty much put himself to take all the risks up front.

So yeah, ended up cutting my arm off. Wonder if anything would have changed if I didn't. Probably would, considering I hid my bite in ep4 and went to get Clem alone. Lol @ the whole group getting tricked and jumped by cancer survivors.

I like how some minor things you said in the first episode came back in cool ways in episode 5 like Clem saying her parents are "already dead".

So... how does it end up? Different Endings? Ben and Kenny staying alive?

Even through it was a sad ending it wasnt as good as i thought it would be. But now we got the worst cliffhanger ever... who will we play in the next season? Will we play Clem? Or somebody else? Will there be ever a season 2? Will Telltale make a Jurassic Park Season 2 first(I fucking hope not)? When they make a season 2 they should spoil at least what happens after season 1 so we can breath some air.

I needed 2 hours for this episode. But the Scene befor Marshal House was pure awesome.

Just... when????

With the first two episodes of its series of zombie-based point-and-click adventure games behind it, TellTale Games is already looking ahead - way ahead. Today the studio confirmed that it is planning a second season of The Walking Dead for an unspecified time after the release of the current season's final episode. Senior Vice President of Marketing Steve Allison told Polygon, "this will not be the last The Walking Dead game series that we do."

Did anyone else audibly shout "No" when Christa took a swig from Kenny's drink?

The way she stared at it and then took a big swig, I almost thought she wanted to basically kill her baby after all the stuff they'd experienced. Take as large a swig as possible for maximum damage?

Just finished, this last episode felt a bit rushed, but it was still fantastic. The walk to the hotel destroying zombies with the cleaver was very cathartic, and all what came after was the perfect finale for the season.

Bravo Telltale, you have set the bar high, GOTY and Lee/Clem are the best characters from a videogame that I remember.

I would probably rate the episode 4>5>2>3>1. I would rank 2 higher, but that stupid hostage sequence with Brenda just ruined the mood of the episode for me, and honestly if it wasn't for the rest of the episode being so good to make up for it, I would rate 2 even lower because that dumb sequence was the lowpoint of the series for me.

Basically what happened is that I knew what to do, walk forward, stop when Brenda tells you, talk to her, rinse and repeat. But Lee kept moving ahead (even when I let go quite a while before, or even if I pull back on the stick) and getting shot because Brenda's tolerance for how long it takes to stop is so low. I had to replay that sequence for a long time before I finally finished it and I don't know if anyone else had trouble like that, but regardless I think it was a poorly designed sequence overall.

Just completed Episode 5, great finish to an amazing series, easily Telltale's best work so far. My only gripes are on the technical side; the rare audio skip, choices showing up as "Decision 1, Decision 2" etc. (PC version), hopefully they can iron them out before the next series.

I was surprised with myself when Kenny died, even though he and Lee didn't see eye to eye, I was sad to see him go, even choked up a bit. But I couldn't hold back the manly tears at the end, watching Lee try and make sure Clem had the best chance at survival he could give her, given the situation. I made sure she cuffed me to the radiator, and told her not to shoot me; she shouldn't have to do that.

Kudos to everyone that worked on the series, in a year with massive AAA budget games that had terrible resolutions, you managed to create a cohesive story, engaging characters and a satisfying ending. Well done!

Damn. Them feels...

I didn't lob off my arm since I figured it would be too late since Lee already passed out from the fever(?). Stayed calm with Kenny, my Lee was too tired to care about anything other than finding Clem. Gave up my weapons and tried to reason with the stranger for all good it did. Didn't even choke him to death since I figured I could avoid killing him (like the brothers at the farm). Then Clem shot him and I was all 'wat'. Had Clem finish me off after telling her to keep her hair short and try to find Omid & Christa.

Did anyone try to send the couple over the sign first? I figured I was already as good as dead so I took the risks every time this episode.

He said 'at least one bullet'.
I actually did. Omid goes over first, makes it across. Christa goes second, and you can see the sign moving as she goes. She gets near the end and it breaks. She has enough left on the other side to climb up and be with Omid, with you left behind. That's when he makes the trip down and through the walkers.

Lots O Feels.

Figured it'd end like that, Comic discussion:
I figure Carl and Rick's story will end similar.
. Like the Zombie Guts callback, and for a second, I heard (or thought I heard)thunder in the distance, reminding me of the rain.

Nope, if there is one thing we should have learned from games and media in general by now its parallel stories and sequels with a different cast are pretty much always terrible.

I think the problem with parallel stories is the need to tie in each and every little detail. The narrative never gets the room it needs to breath in those scenarios.

So... how does it end up? Different Endings? Ben and Kenny staying alive?

Clem, Omid, and Christa are the only survivors of episode 5 regardless (Kenny and Ben don't die on-screen, but they're lost in the midst of a pack of walkers). The choices you make in The Walking Dead do not affect the beats of the story, but rather the particulars of the dialog and scenes.

Whether Lee goes alone or brings everyone with him, he and the others meet back at the mansion to discuss the lost boat and band together to rescue Clem. Whether Lee's arm is amputated or not, Kenny brings up Larry and Lee dies handcuffed in the jewelry store. Whether Omid or Lee cross the sign first, Lee ends up separated from the couple and has to hack his way to the Marsh House alone. Whether Lee ransacked the station wagon in episode 2 or not, the owner abducts Clem and threatens Lee. Et cetera.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you, but TWD is not a Choose Your Own Adventure story. Nor is it 999/Virtue's Last Reward, where you're meant to explore every branch of every choice. It's a piece of interactive fiction where the gameplay and decisions exist to create an emotional investment in the characters and the story being told.

Gary...you...you motherfucker :'(

On one hand, I didn't like how a lot of your choices didn't mean squat. On the other hand, I did like the narrative. The separation at the end was just a tad drawn out, but it's not a huge complaint.

Cry? Nope. But it riveted me like no other game has this...generation? This decade?

This is definitely Game of the Year for me. That epilogue, I wanted Clem to fire the gun and see them reunite. I really hope season 2 allows us to see a teenage Clem. Telltale just proved to 99% of other developers that they're doing narrative based gaming wrong. If you want an interactive narrative experience, then this is head and shoulders beyond your standard 'game'.

I'll stick to these gripping emotional experiences with some traditional multiplayer gaming thrown in. And best of all this can all be consumed alongside a busy working life, with games split into digestible chunks.

Just finished it. Fine work. The "choices" coalesce into a single narrative progression, and so don't ultimately mean too much, but the final decision you have to make is a good one. The Lee/Clem relationship is strong throughout the series.

I liked it a lot. But I was hoping for at least two different endings. No problem if they are both bad endings and have Lee dying, but at least Omid and Christa's fate should have been up to the player. I think it's really weird this way, with just one post credits scene that doesn't change at all, even if some choices should have at least changed it a little bit.

But season 2 is probably more connected to this one then I thought. Oh well, still great work.

Even if none of the choices in the game actually mattered in the end, it was still pretty damn good. The writing was a bit off for some choices and events, but it was still a great ride, and I'll be there day 1 for Season 2.

It's a shame about the usual Telltale jank, and I hope that their future games will be improved thanks to the success of this game.

Gary as in Gary Whitta? I'm pretty sure he had nothing to do with this episode.

Kenny's the one who got himself and Ben killed.

But when he saw the couple he was all "No, that's wrong. You don't just give up." Giving up and dying in the alley doesn't make any sense for him at that moment.

I took it as he was talking about Lee because Lee still had Clem to live for. I also see how you interpreted it too though, and can totally see it that way. I think you may be right, but the way I took it is just what I thought was going on when I played it is all.
