Far Cry 3 Review Thread

Did they get rid of the super fast respawn times on enemies that made me stop playing Far Cry 2?

Once you capture an outpost good guys move in and it's yours forever (as a fast travel point and with bounty boards for side missions). I think the surrounding areas get less populated too.

This is insane. Never expected.

Also, not sure if i should play the game with german voices.

Vaas has Heath Ledger's (Joker) german voice and he sounds fucking great.

On a serious note, I hope they fixed the Far Cry 2 wide screen issue, for the unaware it had the Bioshock issue of Widescreen being just a cropped version of the 4 : 3 image and not actual 16 : 9 widescreen.

I... Might have to eat my words

It's certainly not Far Cry 2, which you were arguing the whole time so don't think you have to eat your words other than it being a great game. Eurogamer perfectly described Far Cry 2 in their Far Cry 3 review in one paragraph:

"A lot of this stuff was true in Far Cry 2, of course, but while that game was also magnificent in its own way, it was a little bit in love with itself in some other respects - which resulted in things like bus journeys, respawning military checkpoints and other ideas that seemed to be more about getting the design to match the setting than making things more enjoyable for the player. Far Cry 3 is a clear reaction to that - there's fast-travel galore, no more respawning, sympathetic checkpointing and lots of shortcuttery - but as well as curing some of its predecessor's ills, it also builds on it spectacularly."

Clint Hocking is awesome, but even he would say Far Cry 2 was a flawed experiment.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised at the reviews. Well not the mainstream places that give 9s and 10s out like candy but even RPS gushed over it. It seems like the sum of this game is enough to counter all of the things they stupidly took out from FC2. I feel better about my preorder now.

Guess I will have something to play over winter break, glad that in addition to shooting, theres also the stealth approach. Also love the fact that there is hunting as well in the game.

For a moment there, I was honestly starting to wonder if Land Sharks were a real thing. Google images seems to say no. Man, Land Sharks would suck.

So bought.

Can you make 'Single Player maps' with the editor? Or its just for MP levels.

According to Ubisoft on the forums: I'll paraphrase:

"You have to validate your map before you can make it available to the public for multiplayer play. Vehicles, and AI will NOT validate."

Seems Ubisoft are serious about not having Vehicles and AI in the multiplayer. According to them, they are in the editor for you to be able to enjoy, but when you wish to share the maps with the public, AI and vehicles aren't allowed =/

It's a huge tease for sure. It makes me think that they are planning some kind of DLC that will allow it hopefully.

No. Only for yourself. You wont be able to share it with your buddies, at least for now.

Here's a vid that was just published that kinda explains it:

Only for you to fuck around with by yourself. The map wont validate to share.

Anyone know what the save system is like? I believe FC2 had checkpoints on console and manual/quicksave on pc. I'd rather FC3 be checkpoint only on both PC and console...if it is ill probably go with the pc version.

Judging from the PC footage I've seen, it seems to be checkpoints.

That is funny. I mainly want the map editor to make crazy-ass little sandboxes for me to mess around in anyway, so it works out great.

Watching this again and the game seems to run fine on PS3. Also, it looks like they improved the controls too. Far Cry 2 had some terrible analog stick acceleration, where you would push the stick to aim and keep pushing but the movement didn't seem to register and then suddenly the movement kicked in.

But in this video the controls look quick and responsive.

Nope, that seems to be a common complaint from all the reviews. The HUD is really annoying.

Urgh.
Judging by the videos I've seen, I'm finding it almost offensive.
I wanna play the man of the jungle not the tourist in the wild resort. :/

Take over once, and they get populated by friendly forces forever.

Anybody think thats perhaps a step too far? I dont want to go through the game feeling completely unthreatened as I travel around. The speed of the respawning was my problem with FC2, not that they respawned in general.

Maybe adding the wild animals in kind of replaces that constant danger feeling?

I didn't explain it to the fullest, sorry about that. Pirates will not disappear out of the area completely, there will still be random patrols and encounters and whatnot. It is just that liberating a checkpoint makes it a fast-travel location and adds a weapon cache where you can buy and upgrade gear, as well as hunting and/or assassination side missions.

Theoretically you can liberate a camp and get assaulted by an enemy patrol 50 yards outside said camp.

Plenty of footage showing being attacked by animals and humans while free roaming, and a ton of bases to take over. Not to mention that new side quests open up at each base you occupy.
