CorvoSol: here is the most current copy of THE LIST devised by Hito and me. It's incomplete and there are a few things that either need to be watched to confirm LISTworthiness or are otherwise marked with "caveats", but here you go:

AD Police OVA
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (tentative upon watching)
Angel Cop (dub) (caveats)
Bagi, The Monster of Mighty Nature
Baoh
Black Lion
Blood-C
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Crystal Triangle
Cyber City Oedo 808 (dub)
Dark Cat
Dog Soldier
Dracula: Emperor of Darkness (dub)
Earth Maiden Arjuna
Garzey's Wing
Glass Fleet: Legend of the Wind of the Universe
Golden Laws
Goku: Midnight Eye (tentative)
Hermes: Winds of Love
ICE (footnote: most incomprehensible ever)
Laws of Eternity
Laws of the Sun
Mad Bull 34
Mars of Destruction
Melody of Oblivion
Rebirth of Buddha
School Days
Shuffle (major caveats)
Street Fighter 2 V (with caveats)
Sukeban Deka (dub)
Wicked City (tentative upon watching)
Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito

Dude where's Black Rock Shooter TV? You can't leave Mari Okada's masterpiece off the list.

You may also need to add Brain Powerd to that list at some point but I have to finish watching it first.

This reminds me, you still haven't finished your end of the bargain. I finished Brave 10, you finish your share.

I took that burden upon myself to spare him when he was deathly ill at the time. You should respect that
even if you never agreed to it.

BRS TV isn't even entertainingly bad. It's just bad and should be forgotten.

I own Brainpowerd. I can confirm that it does, indeed, belong on this list.

I think NichM commented on that line, actually - it's pretty interesting.

Well that's certainly some coincidence.

Everything there is pretty bad, but theres nothing bad about Catgirl NukuNuku. Its just old school awesomeness. Its in the same vein as other android maid anime from the period, like Steel angel Kurumi and Mahoromatic. that said it is a HELL of a lot of fun and so is the TV series. Avoid Dash though. It sucks. they changed nuku Nuku too much. Totally ruined her.

You mean to say that you actually derived some kind of perverse enjoyment from BRS TV rather than just suffering?

Crest of the Stars
So I watched this over the past couple of days. I went into this show almost completely blind knowing only that it was a space opera and seeing a picture of Lafielthat it was good. Already from the start of the first episode I knew I was going to like this show, I thought the narration added a lot to the immersion of the show and the OP was handled in a fairly classy manner too though that's becuase I'm used to OPs usually being silly j-pop and clicke character art. This show's art itself was pretty standard for its time though it had some stand-out mechanical animation at points. Not much bad however.
Moving back to the characters and the story itself, I really liked the character interaction throughout the show.
The captain of the patrol vessel at the start was seriously cool shame she had to die so early in the show but I guess it couldn't be helped.
I also wasn't a huge fan of the
meido arc
though it was still entertaining but imo the least good part of the show.
Also watching this in retrospect gave me some serious Gundam SEED vibes, which leads me to believe that either both SEED and COTS both took inspiration from the same source, SEED ripped parts of COTS or a combination of the two.

You should read the SAO manga.

CotS is quite a bit older than SEED so if there was copying it was in that direction. The anime adaptation of CotS was made by Sunrise which is, of course, famous for Gundam among other things.

This is so hilariously true. You will never feel alienated if you watch those shows and post about it here. you immediately get everyone's attention. Try it!
I probably shouldn't even be getting involved in this discussion, but I don't think the fact that things in this thread work this way is a good thing.

But we can never forget the name of the bird that we saw that day.
But we must.
And I need to see Ano Hana too much anime too little time, I should try less commitment.

It should only be viewed in the form of his impression posts. Classics, those were.
Yes that is the part of history that should not be forgotten.
Edit:

I know that, hence why I only mentioned one direction in the ripping off. However, SEED was also based on Gundam 0079 as was pointed out to me on IRC so it is likely CotS borrowed some elements from there. Having only seen CotS and SEED from these shows I can't compare what was taken etc.

Watching awful shows to fit in is a terrible idea.

By all means, watch awful shows for the experience but you shouldn't be watching them so you can be accepted here.

p.s. Watch School Days

Since I haven't seen you show up for a while, I have to say hello and hope all is well in your quarter!

It's not ideal, but it is what it is.

I'm not even sure how Nuku Nuku got on the list, tbh. I think Hito had some fuzzy memory of it from long ago and wanted us to check it out just to be safe along with other stuff considered tentative--we were in the process of vetting shows at one point but that kind of petered out after we only made it two episodes into the execrable Amazing Nurse Nanako and decided we would probably kill ourselves trying to watch everything, hah.

Some shows just bring animeGaf together in celebration. It is what it is.

Im not saying people should watch those shows to fit in. Just that watching those shows draws everybodys attention. They are animeGaf magnets. Cant be helped.
Who the hell watches shows to fit in anyway? Watch what you want.

I'll be happy as long as people stop recommending School Days.

Honestly, it's gotten pretty old. Especially when someone seems genuinely interested in checking out something good and instead get 5-10 people telling them that they have to watch School Days and that it's the most amazing thing ever.

Frankly, there shouldn't be a "default list-show-that-people-immediately-recommend", but no one wants to give up whatever reputation AnimeGAF seems to have.

But you know what? I think I'm the only person in the thread who feels that way. So I'm just going to shut up and sit over in the corner where I won't bother anyone.

How long has it been that way? Is this just a phase animegaf is going through or tradition?

Considering the last 10 or so posts, it seems a fair amount of people hold the same opinion...

It's fine if people are seeking out "transcendent" anime, but if they're just asking for something good to watch...

Even so, there's no reason School Days should be the first one recommended ahead of anything else.

This, pretty much. Attention whoring is kind of a cynical way to frame our various LIST rituals anyway; I'm not out to question anyone's motive for watching something just because a particular kind of "culture" has sprung up around watching certain things. They benefit, we benefit, anyone having fun doing it benefits, participation is 100% voluntary.
