Sony Black Friday sales breakdown

The lead is approximately 1.2 million, ps3 could easily exceed that this holiday season especially with ps3 sales up and 360 sales down

PS3 sales arnt up though are they? And 360 outshipped it by 1.7m last year, overshipping or not we're not going to see such a massive role reversal.

We got PS3 shipments for Jul-Sep 2012? Only saw PS2+PS3 numbers. Is there a link?

No just my guesstimations on what the split was, it's not concrete at all but I used the most logical outcome from all the data we do have.

I said multiple times in this very thread that it's going to bomb, including in the same post you just quoted. Someone asked about "big Western 3DS games" and I interpreted that as referring to upcoming Western-developed 3DS games with big budgets relative to the platform. Yeesh.

No need to get defensive. The post I quoted makes no reference to the game bombing, only that 'you have no idea how the game got greenlit, at least not on that budget', which can mean different things. All I saw is one post where someone asked for a big western 3DS game for 2013 and you mentioned Mirror of Fate, which makes no sense whatsoever, glad you agree that's not a big game at all. I see you misunderstood what the poster meant though, so it's all good.

No, I'm saying that big (as in full-priced retail) games aimed at the "dudebro"/"enthusiast"/18-30-year-old male gamer (as in Vita's primary target audience) can't sell on dedicated handhelds in 2012. Again, see above.

Again, no need to get defensive or try to be a smartass. You are pretty much saying almost the same thing as you quoted me saying. It's not a problem exclusive to Vita as you yourself listed RE: R on your list.

At least for Black Friday they were.

That 1.7 mil over shipment for 360 is not going to happen this year. Microsoft admitted they over shipped and expected greater sales due to kinect. This year kinect is even less of a factor.

Shipments could end up even at the minimum, I don't think ms has a chance of selling more. And ps3 generally sells better in non holiday months so by the end of Q1 or Q2 ps3 will likely be second

You're right; my wording was too defensive. Sorry about that.

It's definitely not a problem exclusive to Vita, but it's a much bigger problem for Sony since that's the main audience they're chasing. I think that to the extent that that demographic actually wants dudebro games on a portable device, Infinity Blade or other such bite-sized titles are generally good enough for them.

I never saw that at all, link? They didn't overship the entire amount either, they still actually sold more to the consumer than PS3.

You just said they can overtake by the end of the holiday, now you're changing the goal posts. The likelyhood is it'll overtake during Q3 next year, depending on how MS intervenes.

When you consider the launch price, the year gap, missing 2 christmas periods in Europe compared to the 360. It's cost them a fortune but they managed to pull it back.
When you consider the fact that the PS3's predecessor sold about 6 times more than the 360's predecessor, that is just sad. Losing a vast majority of market share and burning through the profits of the previous gen is nothing to be impressed by.

Link is the first post in this thread.

I'm not moving goal posts, I said it was possible for Sony to sell more than Microsoft by 1.2 million, but not a certainty.

360s Black Friday in the us this year only amounted to around 225k difference over ps3, last year they sold more than 500k better in the US

Says nothing about MS admiting they overshipped, care to point it out?

We don't don't even know the gap is 1.2m, that's as good a guess as my 2m~

Where on earth are you getting your numbers from? We got no word on PS3 numbers last BF, I check with JVM. The fact they didn't claim this was their best ever BF like they did last year suggests they're down this BF just like the 360. So we have no idea how much better 360 did than PS3 last BF, certainly wasn't 500k though. Not to mention MS for some reason didn't include the saturday after BF in their report wheras Sony did.

The gap on BF could end up being not to dissimilar to last year.

Why not? Christmas quarter lead in sales have gone back and forth between X360 and PS3. It's a myth that X360 sells more in every christmas quarter. Also considering how it seems that Kinect has faded compared to previous years and MS stuffed the channels last year we definitely could see rather massive role reversal.

They've reversed on the back of intervention. Since 2010 PS3 hasn't dominated or won a holiday (in units sold to consumer.)

The only differences this holiday to last are.

Kinect has faded.
No PS3 price cut.
PS3 doesn't have any system selling SW.
MS actually has a big game for the holiday.

MS didn't overship 1.7m, if you actualyl think about it you're realise how ludicrus it is, they wouldn't have been able to ship 1.4m the following Q if they did.

Sales are dropping in the US, more so in terms of sheer units for 360 purely because there was more room for it to fall. You can bet bottom dollar the same thing is happening in Europe only PS3 dropping more because it had further to fall.

Japan, PS3 has to compete with Wiiu this year.

I think both of those are amazing. The fact that Sony lost all that amazing lead they had is amazing for MS, yet it's also amazing how Sony was able to reverse the PS3's fortunes and will likely end up past 360

2010 and 2011, that's two and there is nothing radically different to this one than last. In fact on paper it's worse for PS3 than 360.

Ha. I just figured out out that we've already had this argument, right here. And the argument about whether MS overshipped last year right here. So I guess refer to those threads if you want to continue this, because you're effectively spouting the same incorrect information again.

No, I'm not. They wouldn't have been able to ship 1.4m in Q1 if they massively overshipped in Q4. That's a fact, it would have been something like 600k. And you didn't prove anything in that thread, just put across your opinion without thinking about things logically.

Are people just not that interested in PS3 or people just wanted an 360? Nearly 225k down in sales is A LOT.

Nice to see Sony sales in NA.

PS+ gives a cross value to both Vita and PS3, being a good reasons for the users of a system to get the ohter and a great option for Sony to include it in the box as a cheap way for them to do 'console bundles'.

Even if it still needs a big seller, Vita is shaping a consistent game library and is improving its value during its first year thanks to recent additions like Ps+, PSOne games, Cross buy and others.

Hope that finally both Vita and PS3 reach a permanent sub $200 entry point price with a PS+ code on it. This combined with their upcoming games would help their sales very well. And if Sony markets more explaining better the Crossbuy and PS+ values, even more.

PS3 sales are up yoy on black friday, not sure if they're on track for the entire year.

Oh yeah and I remember now, you were the one who told me in the other thread my 500k+ black friday prediction would have the include the whole month.

Unless someone has internal company numbers, no one is going to win any points. The public evidence for either side is too fuzzy to get a clear picture. but really who cars who "wins" holiday sales, is this some horse race?

Here we go again...

PS2 didn't hit 100m until after 360 launched. Google it.

Sony have shipped 50m PS2 units and 70m PS3 units since then.

No they're not, PS3 bundles are. Last year they said 'best black friday ever for PS3' we've seen no such thing this year. I said what? I never predicted PS3 would do 500k for the whole month ... My predictions, largely unchanged.

Do you live under a rock or something?

If Sony would disseminate the info about PS Vita + PS Plus bundle, they would probably drive huge sales - that might actually be the greatest deal in the history of gaming. It might also not work in their favor - software drives profits, and that might skim too many sales off their bottom line.

I don't really understand how Plus financially benefits Sony at this point actually. Certainly benefits the consumer though, so no complaints.

2010? But they tied in 2010.
Btw I'm not sure what's your point, I mean that fact that this year 360 won't enjoy in the US the sales lead that it had last year in the US compared to the PS3 is pretty much a fact. That lead was due to Kinect, that effect is now completely gone.
Whoever comes out on top in Q4 depends on how things sum up worldwide in the different countries but I wouldn't expect the 360 to gain any significant ground this year if anything at all. In Europe this year PS3 is being pushed heavily.

Shipments yeah. The fact they shipped 2.7m in Q1 tells us they did better over the holidays though, that's a complete anomaly for them.

360 would outsell PS3 in the US as much as it did last year you're right, we have no idea how much that'll be down until Nov and Dec results are in. Saying 'PS3 is being pushed heavily in Europe" is useless though, you could say the same for 360 in US and without sales numbers you'd think it was doing much better. Again we have to wait on Nintendos charts.

We've also yet to see how PS3 performs this holiday in Japan, a place where 360 sales don't matter.

Seriously, Sony makes a lot of money from these new slim. They are so cheaply made and cost more the the first slim. The profit margin on this one is high. No wonder they did not lower the price for the holidays. They will probably lower it no sooner than next holiday to maximize profits, and release the PS4.

No they're not, PS3 bundles are. Last year they said 'best black friday ever for PS3' we've seen no such thing this year.

"PlayStation 3 Black Friday bundle sales increased 15 percent, and total PS3 sales including hardware, software, and peripherals grew 9 percent compared to last year. "

There was definitely rather large overshipment during last Christmas quarter. In US they were up for quarter (10%) but not that much as in december sales were actually down yoy. What data we got from European countries sales were flat or sligtly down and well Japan lol. Then they shipped 1.8 million more compared to previous year. Definitely overshipment.

"PlayStation 3 Black Friday bundle sales increased 15 percent, and total PS3 sales including hardware, software, and peripherals grew 9 percent compared to last year. "

I don't get his point. Sony say they sold 525k PS3 bundles vs 450k PS3s last year, but because they didn't say that it was their best ever he is implying that there was a negative sales rate on the standalone units.

PS3 was predicted to have done somewhere a little under 500k last year due to MS saying 360 sold 2 to 1. Unless MS was just lying, which is possible but unlikely. I believe you're the only one here who is trying to argue that PS3 sales declined yoy.

Also, what I was referring to you was dismissing my 500k-600k prediction and saying "for month, sure".

Your point? It's a combination, considering PS+ grew 295% ... it's still telling they didn't say it ws their best BF ever when they did last year. If it was, why wouldn't they again?

No, they simply shipped too little during Q4 2010, thus the big 2.7 shipment in Q1 the following year. (There were actual reports on shortages rather than just hearsay like some things people spout.)

Some of that 2.7 should have been in the 6.5 Q4, because MS never do that well in Q1.

So you've already pointed out they were up in US, flat in Europe and more or less flat in Japan last holiday, which means they sold more, though not much.

Given what I just said, that some of that 2.7m from Q1 should have been in Q4, comparing 8.2 to 6.5 and saying "lol they were only up 10% in US yet shipped 1.7m more, overshipped" is stupid.

The likelyhood is they should have shipped 7.6m in Q4 and 1.8m (still their best Q1 ever riding off Kinect) meaning they only overshipped something like 500k~

The 1.4m this Q1 is perfectly normal figure and doesn't suggest overshipping. 08 and 09 they shipped 1.7 and 1.5, but they also sold to consumer more consoles in those periods than this year. You realise 360 sales have been at all time lows at points this year right?

And thats only 1 week my friend. The gap here in North america will widen these next 2 months of sales by 800k to a million more than likely. Who would have thought the Xbox brand would be ahead by more than 14 million against a company that absolutely owned this territory for 10 years. I sure wouldn't have.

I actually thought they were up until Donny or someone in the NPD thread said Sony were twisting their words, then I spoke to JVM who agreed, I'd take bother their opinions over anyone elses here ...

We'll see when the full numbers come in, but it's still strange how they havn't said it's their best BF ever when they did last year and how they're using PS3 holiday bundles and not PS3 overall? If they were up YoY overall they'd just say ... it doesn't make any sense. Certainly doesn't align with the fact they've been down as much as 30% recently either.

I dunno why I would say 500 - 600k for the month, even before I made that post I put 650k- 700k as my lowest PS3 prediction.

I don't get his point. Sony say they sold 525k PS3 bundles vs 450k PS3s last year, but because they didn't say that it was their best ever he is implying that there was a negative sales rate on the standalone units.

Prelim figures is my guess, like when Nintendo claimed they passed 39m but they didn't. You think it being down or normal units being down is unlikely?

Find out how Sony worded their pr in 08, 09 and 10. If they used "best black friday" every year yes then it is telling and could mean ps3 peaked last year, if not. Then whatcha gonna do?

I don't know what your point about PS+ is.

But as to why Sony wouldn't boast about it being their best PS3 Black Friday ever, there are a few reasons as to why that could be, but the most reasonable I can see is they don't want to be compared to Microsoft being down, but still beating their best ever.

You got it. This is the best ever BF for PS3, but they are 225k units behind 360. In a vacuum the result is great, but in the current market there is not much reason to celebrate.

What the hell are you on about?!? The figures are fine and come from the NPD weekly data. In what way could they have sold fewer than 450k units when they sold at least 525k? It's literally the stupidest argument I have ever heard. No doubt sales of normal units are down, but it makes little difference to the fact that Sony sold at least 525k units during BF week.

450k PS3s last year,

No. Parmenides pulled that out from somewhere, but he's never posted any link to back it up. Most everyone else recalls no hard numbers from Sony last year. Parmenides may have been confusing it with the 440K from 2009 (or maybe arbitrarily adding 10K to the highest previously known figure, which was 2009), but we have no solid data from Sony BF last year in the U.S. that I know of.

Great numbers for the Vita. I dont think any of us expected 160k in that span of time. Thank you Amazon!

360 sales skyrocketed the past two years during the holiday season due to Kinect. It has nothing to do with "big software" pushers like Halo, which pretty much everyone who is interested in the series already has a 360. Despite selling software, Halo 4 won't do much to push hardware. And if it will, the effect will be short lived in November only.

There is hardly any push for Kinect this holiday season in terms of software and advertisements.

This is the entire reason why the 360 has done better than the PS3 my substantial numbers in the US for the holiday season. This effect has attenuated greatly, and we're already seeing the results of it this year with the PS3 gaining marketshare and the 360 losing marketshare during Black Friday week. Again, PS3 may have declined during the year, but they had an attractive bundle for the holiday season that allowed them to grow sales. And it doesn't matter that they don't have a big exclusive either, most gamers that are picking these systems up right now only tend to care about CoD and Assassins Creed.

On paper, the PS3 is in a stronger position this holiday season because they simply don't have as much room to fall as the 360 does due to the lack of Kinect boost. At best, Microsoft breaks even with Sony this holiday season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony ship more and reduce the 1.2 million gap between the systems.

Sorry, my estimate should be 1.4 million. See this post:

PS3 has been reliably selling 75+% of combined ps2/ps3 sales over the past year (over 85% during the holidays last year), and obviously going forward the ps3 will only increase that share as the ps2 slowly dies off. So using 75% as a minimum baseline, we get the following picture:

63.9 + .75*2.8 +.75*3.5 = ~68.6 million units sold globally after this quarter at a minimum.

Compare that to 360's 70 million and ps3 is now only trailing by 1.4 million units max.

It's pretty safe to say at this point that by the end of Sony's fiscal year the PS3 will be in second place globally, certainly before the next consoles come out.
