Sony patents "hybrid separable motion controller"; gearing for PS4?

Pointer controls are pretty much the only thing on Wii that was an absolute improvement over what was previously available on consoles.

Keeping motion controls but removing precise pointing would be exactly the wrong way to go.

It was slightly less accurate, but Skyward Sword's use of motion controls for pointing wasn't bad. I actually liked being able to use the pointer without having to point at the screen. It was like using a mouse.

The gamepad uses motion control for pointing as well, and it's pretty quick and precise.

Just make it two navigator controllers(one modded with face buttons) with a much smaller orb at the top... maybe even just an led or something.

Couldn't they just make the DS4 transparent and have a certain part of the DS glow? Having those Move balls on the DS looks terrible.

I actually laughed when I saw "Sony patents..." The actual patent didn't quite live up to expectations but it's nice to know I can get some mirth from reading two words.

why are there two big balls on the top of it. Why do we need big balls on our controllers? Can't it just be like the six-axis but actually functional?

How about the split design and modularity? Peopel take for granted how much these features bring to the table. And the speaker idea is f*cking brilliant but Nintendo didn't want to refine there. Where the controller falls apart relative to traditional controlers is in the nun chuck, which Nintendo stuburnly refused to redesign.

The idea has been proposed for years, and even before the Wii Gyration was making pitchs to some devs.
Oh, god.

I haven't escaped the motion control horror yet. It will follow me into the new generation.

Oh lord, why do you mock me!

But it should become a standard. You'll play the games traditionaly as you like and other people would use pointing capacity. So that way you enjoy games as always while getting the ass kicked in shooters because insisting to aim with thumb sticks :)

This is the best and most logical solution to the motion controls vs standard controller issue.

If they can find a way to make it comfortable and do it without the balls, it could be great.

I don't see why people are.complaining. you get motion controls without any loss of an option for traditional controls. They just need to work on the design to make sure it is comfortable.

If they can remove the bulbs and make it confortable, then sure, go ahead. Although ideally motion control should've just been left to rot.

And we know most developers won't even bother with the motion features. But this is GAF and people like to whine.

I don't like it. It makes the standard controller look weird and uncomfortable. There should be a separate motion controller and a separate traditional controller. They should just make the Move forward compatible with PS4 and have it bundled with the system so developers support it more. So the PS4 should come with Dualshock 4, Move and PSEyeHD.

With those breakapart designs, you get an awkward normal controller and an awkward motion controller. Just break it and KEEP it broken.

I knew we'd see this design in this thread. Anyway, as per usual, I vote this as the next PS4 controller.

Using Motion Plus for the pointer was easily the worst part of Skyward Sword's controls.
It was so slow and imprecise, not remotely like using a mouse.

It was slower than the pointer, but I had no problem shooting precisely. I meant it was like a mouse in that you don't rub the mouse on your monitor; in fact you move the mouse perpendicular to the monitor. The default forward center for the wiimote + could be any direction you choose.

Don't know why allt he media is reporting on this, they had a (working?) concept years ago. I actually remember a video from a dude demonstrating it.

If it standard in all consoles they will.

A rule of ergonomics, never judge the device by look only.

Move should be scrapped, basically retain the same application of the tech, but with a higher resolution camera with 3D depth capabilities. This will result in a less intrusive tracking solution as a bonus.
The Wii Remote and nunchuck need a next gen version really bad Though (especially the nunchuck).
It looks like we won't have it sadly :(

I have always tought that the PS4 controller should be something likes this, it makes sense.
This with a PSeye and they're set.
Of course the actual design of the controller has to be great, hide the glowing balls as much as possible and make the controller confortable.

The only genuinely awesome thing about the Wii was the splitting of the controller. That's something I hope for from all console manufacturers in the future.

Assuming they want to merge Move and Dualshock, the only reason I'd want the baubles removed is if they've found as good or better way to fulfil the same functionality (positioning). Which they might do.

But I wouldn't want them removed solely for aesthetics. If they took the baubles off and with it took the positioning...that would be silly. Who cares what a controller looks like, really?

Don't see what the problem would be with a separable controller either if the connecting and disconnecting is smooth and robust.

I like the system they patented elsewhere, though, which would appear to let them remove the baubles if they wanted. It used something more similar to the wiimote's system for position resolution, but amped up to ninety. It's actually the route I'd have expected Nintendo to go with a wiimote successor, since it seems like a natural extension of their system.

But this is all very hypothetical anyway. Maybe none of this stuff is on the cards for commercialisation.

Oh and also, GAF->Internet->GAF.

That's some comfy design.

Do it. Maybe I'll be interested in a next-gen console if the rest of the design is as forward thinking (which I was beginning to think would be the first console gen I skipped).

Actually, a while ago I was predicting a shitty middle ground between Vita's touchpad and the old as shit Dualshock design sony keeps dragging along to please their fans, as a best case scenario for (finally!)a new controller.

I dont even know why you'd need a touchpad there but seemed to me like the boldest direction they would be willing to go besides reprinting DS with a 4 at the end. But bleh! Fuck that safe bet mentality.
I will do a standing ovation if sony has the balls to make this break-apart motion controller a standard.
Do it Sony! Go all the way or dont bother

Concave analogs, yes. Offset analogs? NOPE. It made sense only last gen when the majority of games were left analog + face buttons. Now a majority are analog-analog and I prefer my thumbs resting symmetrically. More natural instead of one up and one sideways.

I just don't want to be playing Elder Scrolls traditionally on the controller and then having the game forcing me on screen saying " Now take apart the gamepad and slash your way through enemies!!"

Just don't force the damn motion controls.

Looks dumb as hell, but who cares what it looks like. This is how motion controls should be implemented, if they're implemented at all. Look at the games with Move support. People like those, but you can still play it normally.

This is a good thing.

I'd be in the dick
This would be really cool if it didn't rely on the glowing balls. They're so distracting that I rarely use Move because of it.

Nah. There are button mash heavy games that require you to use the left hand as leverage while the right thumb or finger goes nuts.

This won't work.

Two glowing balls and lots of waggling. I don't see anything wrong with this.

With a higher resolution PsEye the move balls can be much smaller.

I'll never understand why people want Next gen system but use antiquated input systems. This seems like the best of both worlds!

Oh fuck that! Pointers are a must for next gen IMO. And anyone calling the PSmove "waggle" never fucking played tumble!
Besides pointer controls for FPS >>>>>>>> dual analog sticks.
It isn't necessarily about controls, it's also about comfort. Comfort is the reason why I never use a mouse/keyboard when pc gaming. Pointer controls just isn't comfortable imo.

This looks really strange. In any case, if this is the real PS4 controller, I'd be willing to try it out.
