Only problem is you get so used to controlling the WiiU from any direction that you forget you must point at the TV for it to register the TV controls.
Ha ha. So true. I actually thought mine was broken for an hour or so, before I worked out why it wasn't working.

you are a lucky man... i have 8 inputs... cycle through all of them is a real pain

Damn, you have electronic bliss going on over there. I literally only have my cable box, PS3, and Wii U hooked up, with an extra in case I end up getting the 720 lol

Found the TV I'm temporarily using allows one to disable certain inputs so I have it set up to simply switch between the WiiU and the TV.

Only problem is you get so used to controlling the WiiU from any direction that you forget you must point at the TV for it to register the TV controls.

I thought I had a weak signal at first before I thought about it lol

I've been impressed with the gamepad's basic functionality with our Bravia, I didn't expect the buttons/sticks to work but they do, so you can navigate the input menu and TV guide using the stick/dpad and hit A to select something. Simple stuff, but far more than I was expecting.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I'm wondering if they've avoided this because of the overheating issue. I had to turn my WiiConnect24 off on my launch Wii because I noticed artefacts in NSMB in the desert and apparently this is from GPU damage from overheating due to leaving WiiConnect24 on all the time. I have it off on all my Wii consoles now :(

Oh wow, this again? I remember buying a Wii for my nephew and having to return it because of artifacts from a faulty gpu.

My home button hasnt illuminated at all yet even though I have 2 unread notifications. Not sure how all that all works.

Is it possible to switch the screen off on the gamepad whilst using it to play new Super Mario Bros U on the TV?

Sadly, you can't. At least I haven't figured out how. I don't think you can turn it off at all unless you go into the options and just manually dim it to the lowest setting. A bit annoying sometimes with netflix.

You can turn it off in the Home button Controller Settings option. You just can't USE it afterwards.

And no, you can't turn off the screen and use the gamepad at the same time in NSMBU. Your only option if you don't want the screen on is to turn off the gamepad in the settings and then use a Wii Remote.

Ah okay no biggie though really.

If I want to buy a nintendo gift card are they just the existing ones in the shops or will there be Wii U specific ones? Any UK links to these for a good price? God Im a n00b :/

i'm pretty sure the timers for installs etc are hours:minutes

No they are not

Yeah. They are.

How are you lucky Euro folks liking the TV remote implementation? Does it work nicely for you? Do you think you will actually use it?

I've been using it a bunch. I can just press the button, and change the volume. Or input. I know where the gamepad is, while I'm playing. No I don't even have to look for the remote, that's like in some weird crevice of the couch half the time, anyway.

Protip: + / - buttons on the controller adjusts volume when you have the remote app open on the gamepad.

If you can't find Wii U specific ones, look for 3DS cards. They're the same thing.

My headphone jack already started to behave erratically on the first evening of play... :(

I hope Nintendo warranty covers this...

Other than that, I quite like the Wii U.

It's not as mind bending as the original Wii was for me, but I see a lot of potential.

I've really grown to like my Wii U over the past few days, after a very shaky start.

The gf seems to really like it, the killer feature is definitely being able to continue playing games on the GamePad. But amazingly, she's also started using MiiVerse, something I never thought I'd see.

The console certainly holds a lot of potential and I think people are being overly unfair by focusing purely on the under-the-hood power of the console. The GamePad is also a good piece of kit, being able to watch Netflix on it and plug headphones in whilst someone else watches the TV is quite something. But for general gaming, I think the real benefit is playing off the screen occasionally rather than added functionality.

So, my few remaining gripes and things I'd like to see...

- Not enough released or announced exclusives. Nintendo needs more, they need to show some real commitment to this console - it's unique and therefore deserves unique games. I need more to tear me away from the 360/PS3.

- Virtual Console. Why oh why was this not at launch, it really would have given me more to play on this thing outside of NSMBU. Playing all those old SNES games on the GamePad is an awesome no-brainer. And hopefully Gamecube too, if they can find a workaround for the analogue triggers.

- Why no disc spin-down? I love the Wii U web-browser and it's so easy and quick to use straight from the GamePad without turning the TV on etc. But... it's a bloody noisy way to surf the web because I've got NSMBU spinning loud 360-style in the drive. But I'm not playing it - so why not spin the disc down!? Come on Nintendo, simple stuff.

- Still not happy that I can't turn the display off whilst using the GamePad on games where I want to play on the TV. It's so distracting for me. I've now got a Wiimote to get around this issue on NSMBU but it shouldn't have had to come to that.

OK, so a few gripes still remaining but it's definitely growing on me every day - to the point that I was incredibly disappointed when hearing about the poor sales of the console in the UK. I really do hope this is a success - nobody makes games like Nintendo and NSMBU is a real joy to play. It's so simple and yet so deep at the same time - like every Nintendo game. So many secrets, so much to discover, it never gets old.

Ultimately though, I feel this was rushed to release. There's so much potential here that the console could be something extremely special by the end of next year, but Nintendo needs to act fast and realise that potential sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed everythign works out.

Is anyone else having problems with their philips tv? If I press input on the gamepad the input menu appears but I can not move or make a selection.

I am stating to love tuning off my TV during most games and just playing on the gamepad

I am really going to hate future games that force both screens

This is very good. It means devs really have to create something special that worth sacrificing offscreen gaming, like zombie u. Cheap gimmicks that kill offscreen gaming wont get positive reaction and reviews.

I hope you push the headphone plug into the jack really hard until it snaps in and not just let it hang there loosely. I didn't push it all the way in at first and wondered why it was so wobbly (well, didn't that come out wrong).

About the general "Gamepad as TV remote" discussion:
I use it only when I wanna change the colume quickly, and even then only if the actual remote isn't in reach (read: more than 1m away).
It's convenient and for some reason, I can point my gamepad whereever and my TV STILL gets the signal when I push a button on the touchscreen. Feels good, bro.

I haven't looked into it enough yet, but I could can at least cycle through the inputs by pressing the input button repeatedly.

Quick question: how do I take screenshots to attach to messages? There's always 2 to select showing the WiiU menu, but I've seen others post in-game screenshots as well.

The screenshot will just be whatever state the Wii was in before entering the Home menus. One shot for the television and one for the Gamepad.

"Pushing it in with some strength applied" is the only way i still get to hear something on my headphones.

I am kind of wary of sending the gamepad to Nintendo at the moment.

Naturally, I'd love to play with my new toy and not send it away again, and, I am scared by Nintendos reaction, also, how long they will keep it.

I think home button led is used when you are receiving a Wii U videochat call not for messages/miiverse notifications

so I got it in my lunch break today,
so it was like 2hrs ago...
I got a small hd tv from a friend and he forgot to give me the remote...
Well now I can lower the sound!
Heck it's good not great but I'll use it all the time.
Like "universal tv remote" all the time

I made a mistake though I launched the update so now it's updating while I'm at work but I didn't get to see much of my wiiu outside of the regular menu, online config and mii import from 3DS ;_;.

BTW the pad is small, I though it'd be bigger tbh, it's heavy though (as in my god I can't carry it on 1 hand for 20 mins while doing something else).
I don't know why but I expected something as light as a DS/3DS but bigger, and the screen is smallish too

Talking of imported Mii I'm glad to see you can change your Mii as much as you like. The 3DS forces you to use one Mii that you can only edit but not change.

So yeah, I think I'll hate you for the next 5 minutes or so. But then I will appreciate the joke even more.

Hm, so if I'm in-game and press the home button and enter Miiverse to send a message from there while the game is running, it should work.

Going to try that out later, thanks. :)

so, how was it? did you enjoy it at last?

Rough edges throughout, launch-game-itis in every respect, lots of room to improve, and one brief portion of the game that was so absurdly out of place and terrible it really should have been scrapped entirely.

But overall very pleased with it as it manages to succeed in survival horror where 99% of games this generation do not. The core formula and design philosophy is surprisingly bold and original, overcoming the stigma of "Red Steel Wii U" and "Token Wii U launch shooter". It wouldn't matter if it were on 360, PS3, or PC: the design itself manages to be original by its own merits. And for that I applaud the team and Ubisoft for investing in such a risky title.

non-spoilery thoughts? Is it fairly short, or have you been caning it?

Haven't cracked mine open yet. Not family friendly and my wife probably wouldn't want to watch either, so it'll be late night with headphones only.

My wife enjoyed watching me play. Final playtime was 17h34m. I just started back through on Survivor Mode. For me it was easily worth the price.

Took me maybe 12 - 14 hours to finish? I could see someone finishing it faster, as I meticulously explored the environment and played very carefully. I'll probably go back and do survivor mode too, just to see if I can.

When I first turned on the Wii U I gave Mario a try. Then booted up Nintendo Land to have a play around. Settled in on ZombiU and found the experience significantly more engaging and addicting than the former two titles. I went back to them each every now and then, but was certainly more invested in finishing ZombiU.

EDIT: Probably took me a fair bit longer than 12 hours now that I think about it, as I remember where my eight hour survivor died.

Finally pulled the trigger on the Wii U. Very excited to play Zombi U. EC's comments give me more confidence.

You had an 8 hour survivor? I've only played about an hour and I had two survivors die. I suck at this game. :(

You gotta play carefully. My first survivor died within the first hour, on the way to the supermarket. Second survivor lasted eight hours. Third survivor lasted maybe three hours. Chewed through ~3 or so more survivors during a really shitty part of the game. Then pushed through to the end game with whichever survivor got through that.

I think the game is best appreciated and enjoyed when you really do focus on surviving. Players who die continually, I can't blame them if they're not having a very good time, because I don't think the game really appreciates that. Lots of deaths cheapen the cost of the death and value of surviving I think. It's a give and take. The more you invest in trying to absolutely stay alive with whoever you've got, the more you find yourself really caught up in the game. And the game then feeds off that, because the longer you've been alive the more intense it is when shit hits the fan. It's one thing to lose a green survivor. It's another to lose a survivor who lasted eight hours, has a shotgun, sniper rifle, crossbow, and AK47 in their backpack, and now wanders halls as a glowing red super zombie.

The UK market isn't all that at the mo but still, they'll suffer from 3DS-itis for a while. The best thing Nintendo can do is start by sorting out the mess with the supermarkets. Wii/WiiU stuff are too muddle together. But I think they'll be fine. Rocky start, fine finish.

Almost done with Black Ops 2 I think. At least the single player campaign. Been putting most of my time into that. Thought it would be ZombiU but usually to tired when I finally come in. I like to play carefully and fear I'll do something stupid or make a big mistake simply because I'm not thinking clearly. However I'm not making the progress I would want in it however. So once I finished the Black Ops 2 campaign (which has been pretty damn good but think the Strike Force Missions really break up the pacing in a bad way) I'm going to dive head first into ZombiU to finish it. If I die then I die.

Just want to finish up the games I have before the next batch come out. Something like Nintendo Land I expect I won't "finish" for a while so it's not on the list. However BO2, ZombiU, Mario, and Ninja Gaiden have to be tackled before any other retail game is bought. I need to stay firm on this.

Received mine on Saturday morning. I think it was an advantage hearing about all the updating/set up issues as I knew exactly what to expect so it wasn't that big a deal to me. I had no major problems - Wi-Fi worked as expected and Nintendo Land was present in the box.

I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm someone who enjoyed a only handful of games on the Wii but appreciated it because it brought something different to the table than the PC/PS360- and that is exactly what I would like the Wii U to do.

Miiverse is probably the most impressive aspect. I am astounded that Nintendo have made such a great online feature. It makes the Wii U online community feel alive and something that I am very much a part of, and it does it with all the charm that one expects from Nintendo. I love the way you are greeted by having hundreds of Miis run down the screen and congregate around whichever game they are playing/talking about. I like that you can drill down and randomly select Miis, and view their posts etc. The 'Yeah-ing' system is great too, allowing the best posts to float to the top. It's always nice to see something makes you smile or chuckle when you turn the console on. The integration with Nintendo Land and NSMBU is excellent. This has something the PSN has never had, and something that Live lost long ago - the feeling of actually being part of an online community. Of course, there are still some major problems in terms of functionality and ease-of-use but this is a good starting point for Nintendo.

I've been quite impressed too by the graphics. Again, I wasn't expecting much but it is Nintendo in HD and that is enough for me. The New Super Mario Bros series has never looked so clean and colourful, while Nintendo Land also looks very sharp and runs well. I haven't checked out any of the current third party titles, and don't intend to, save, perhaps, ZombiU.

The controller screen is also surprisingly good. It provides a real alternative to playing on the TV, which I didn't initially expect. Yesterday while watching the NFL I was playing NSMBU during the breaks. Extremely convenient, especially with the (somewhat limited) TV controls (would like to see support for Onkyo receivers added). The controller is also pretty comfortable. It does not feel like I am holding something too different to a more traditional controller.

In terms of the gameplay itself with the game pad, Nintendo Land shows some very intriguing ideas - some work while some don't. I like the Zelda archery game and the Yoshi draw-a-route game while the wipeout-style racing game typified the central issue with having two screens to look at - not knowing which one to focus on! Any time a 3D racing game refers to a top down 2D view being the easiest to control you know there is something wrong. I'm definitely interested in future uses of the screen, the FIFA demo impressed me with all the on-the-fly management you can do during a game. It's just a shame that only one game pad can be used at any one time. Nintendo Land is a great pack-in title - far superior than Wii Sports.

Overall, I am very happy with the Wii U thus far. I did have fairly low expectations going in and was on the fence for quite some time, but my weekend with it has convinced me that there is a lot of potential to be had.

Use the D-pad or left stick.

After pressing input I can choose from the list with the d-pad and select with the "a" button.

mmm i'm gonna give this a try once i get home... thanks guys!

great, what about the gamepad implementation?

Nintendo Points Cards for the Wii and 3DS work for the Wii U store correct? Saw some on sale in Toys R Us and was pretty interested if that was the case.
