New Wii U Firmware (12/04/2012)

Maybe it is a routing issue, or that some servers are slower than others. Seems to be the same thing with PSN for some people at least. Someone gets very fast speed, while others get slower speed.

Speaking of which PSN is AWFUL at the moment. The new store is always horrifically slow, but it's currently making the slowest elements of Nintendo's online infrastructure look like pioneers of speed.

Barely reading the thread... I'm on page 7 but I don't think it's Nintedo's fault on the slow download times. I live in Mexico.. (Third world problems) Where our connections are not too fast.. My connection is like 4 Mbps and I downloaded in half an hour.

Wii U and/or its servers are fucking dog shit. End of.

I'm on virgin media 20mb in Liverpool and I got this in 15 minutes, I use my own netgear router not their superhub, hopefully when you do eventually get this update, you'll find it fixes issues with your wifi, as there are clearly issues there for some people...

saying the servers are dogshit is probably premature or an ill gotten conclusion, they're using a well known cloud provider (same as PSN according to someone here)... there could be geolocation errors due to virgin's setup, causing the CDN to point you to the wrong server, if you've passed your fair usage limit (some virgin packages are generous, others not) you might be getting your connection throttled.

If slow speeds continue try setting a static IP on your wii u and bypassing the firewall by putting it in dmz. Check the routers firewall log too and check any packet filters or port forwarding rules you've made.

As I say, I'm on virgin and I'm getting great speeds on the system here... do you know if you're a former telewest area?

The new PSN store is worse than the old look.

I can't find anything I search for on that thing anymore.

Looking for the Borderlands 2 DLC I had to rely on front page adverts to find the Torgue DLC. The extra character and first DLC I can't even remember how I managed to find them but I did eventually.

Copying MS was not the way forward. What's wrong with just a normal layout with normal search results?

Used to be NTLworld here.

It's got it's own IP (following those instructions on how to manually connect), will check Dmz etc. so this new update tonight fixes wifi?

Does seem a bit like the early adoption crew are beta testers :/. While I personally have only experienced lovely smooth downloads and only a single hard lock in dozens of hours, I still do suffer long load times for most stuff, and I feel for you guys seeing more majors issues.

All in due time, I suppose

No idea tbh, I believe they said it fixes stability issues -- which could include wifi, you never know

If you set DNS up following that guide that went around, and you used google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) try changing the primary dns to your router's ip (aka gateway ip - probably something like 192.168.1.1) and leave the secondary as google's. The system should try and use virgin's UK DNS by default and fall back to google if ness. If there is some geolocation shenanigans going on, perhaps this can help.

Yeah I liked the old store better. Sure this is easier on the eyes, but they could have just changed the color scheme on the old one.

updated, i dont see any speed improvement.

I didn't on the first load of things but I definitely feel as though the browser loads up quicker, and miiverse is quicker to exit, and a little quicker after one initial load (keeping a cache?)

Its only barely perceptible if there are any such improvements at all, I suspect its as they said and mostly a fix for one or two pressing issues that some have experienced

Yes, I was meticulous about that, shame I didn't check my Hulu and YouTube apps prior to the update. Oh we'll, not huge improvements, them again I've been lucky not having a lot of the issues most complained about. No hard locks for me.

Well that's something at least.

All this talk of load times made me take note when I was using Lovefilm on PS3 tonight. Actually took at least 20sec from clicking the icon to the opening menu loading. Same with iPlayer. PS Store also takes 10-15secs from clicking icon to menu fully loaded.

I've never been bothered by this until I noticed tonight after reading about load times here. Is WiiU worse than this (for eShop and, say Hulu/Netflix apps)?

It takes around the same amount of time... for everything

For the first day patch yes, it was. However Nintendo takes this things seriously, for example, in the 3DS after some stability minor upgradres the eShop load time went from around 15 seconds when it was just released to almost nothing right now so I guess it will get much much better with time.

After the update and updating Sega All Stars still got a hard lock when booting the game one time and had to unplug it. The fact that you can't just power it down normally with the power button on the console on a crash is frankly ridiculous.

Just a guess, but I think it has to do with Router's. We have people claiming to be on fast connections and still having problems while others have no issues.

Personally, I've been lucky and I downloaded this a little after it came out, along with a lot of gaf, and it finished downloading in around 30 min. Something else to note: I've not experienced a single hardlock *crosses fingers*

New PSN is so miserably awful. Much, much slower in every possible way, and you can't find shit unless you go through the weirdly cumbersome search feature. I can't believe they did that.

the worst load is probably around 10 seconds, or similar to what you're describing there, but with faster repeat loads in some circumstances. The browser loads quickly for me, and returning to a suspended game from that, miiverse or the friends list is very quick.

The biggest offenders are reloading warawara/the start menu after closing a game (only because you might reasonably do that a lot), and loading the system settings (baffling).

Using the TV functions is always instant, and having background downloads (incl system updates like this one) is nice... you can play games while you wait.

Interesting. When I came home today, the update was ready to install. But I turned off WLAN before going to work. The console must have downloaded it last night. Installing now...
I'm pretty sure thst if you're close to certain free wifi hotspots (eg. BT open zone in the UK) the Wii U - like the 3DS and DS before it - will use them without any action from you.

:D

I'll quit while I'm ahead! TBH sounds beatable at least. Let's hope they speed it up though. Like beje said they did a good job on 3DS over time so fingers crossed.

Mine arrives tomorrow hopefully. I'm going to try and experience everything myself without preconception....will report back. Also interested if it's just one patch now and how big it is.

you know it could just peoples isps having hick-ups. Everyone has crappy interweb days every once in awhile. Some people just have them more than others.

The update downloaded in the background for me without even noticing it. Then after palying some Mario I saw the notification and proceed it to install...but at 71% IT CRASHED! and warn me that the system will restart. Now my Wii U discs appear as invalid and can not perform the update. Talked to Nintendo, and I am sending it in for repair. Definitely Wii U is a great great console...while it works.

took me about 45 minutes for everything (38 to download the update, 7 minutes to install)

everything is exactly the same, does Nintendo need to do updates to put demos on the e-shop ;P (i know it was available to Europe on Euro launch)

only thing the update did was make my e-shop crash two times

"software is closing" , lol what , but other then that, same ole same ole.

Some site is claiming 3TB HDD work now but still only allow for 2TB of data.

Ok so I don't know what this patch is supposed to change but since I installed it I crashed once in Cod BOPS, once in ZombiU (one hour of unsaved progress lost) and once again exiting ZombiU I got stuck loading the home menu (this one was different in that it didn't have the usual lockup sound though).
That's like 3 crashes in 4 hours of gaming, for only 2 in 2 weeks of intense use before.

They're gonna have to put in some safeguards to protect people's consoles while doing firmware updates. Crashing in the middle of the installation causing systems to brick just isn't good. Almost makes me not want to update because one little glitch can screw you over.

I posted this is the Day 1 thread, but maybe this one is more appropriate :

Is my system update downloading right now ?

I just don't know. I went to the system settings, clicked on system update. It popped 2 buttons on the gamepad : cancel and update. I clicked update and nothing's been happenning for the passed 3 hours and all I can do is turn the gamepad on and off. The TV screen is black I don't see any download progress, pressing Home does nothing, nor does cancel or update... So, I see posts everywhere on the web that say to not turn off the console or it will brick. Thing is, I don't even know if the update had started or not...

Help ?

Your system crashed. All you can do is pull the plug, plug it back in, and hope it didn't break. If it did, return it your outlet you bought it from... should still be under warranty and screwed up updates should be covered.

And it worked. That's a relief. The gamepad couldn't even communicate with the console. I can connect to MiiVerse, so I guess the system is up-to-date.

Edit : Yup, all's fine. I just checked the firmware version and I have 2.1.0 U. Let's just hope this doesn't happen again.

This newest patch is supposed to fix those random crashes... so far so good for me. I haven't had any since the update. Hopefully Nintendo has their shit together now.

Lol, I went to notifications to look for the update (it wasn't there, had to go to system options manually, which is a bit silly), and the thing hard-locked trying to load the notifications screen. Had to unplug it again. Hope the update fixes this...

I guess I am lucky I haven't had any crashes at all except for zombiu not being able to read the disc sometimes and with that I'm not sure if that's the game or the wiiu. I am wondering if some of the zombiu discs are faulty.

So is this update cumulative or do new owners have to download two patches. Also, these download speeds are ludicrously slow.

Nice childish retort

Nintendo obviously has proven with this launch they don't know how to handle online with horrible server support

Do you have one? Because that's absolute nonsense. They're using the same server tech and provider as at least one of their competitors, and in one respect (miiverse) they're doing the social aspect a whole lot better than either at the moment. If this system had cross game voice chat, or some kind of party system, it would be feature complete. Not to mention, not everybody is experiencing problems.

What they ARE guilty of is throwing out a rushed OS, that is still a little slow, crashing for some people and not playing properly with some wifi configurations.

We don't know exactly what's going on tbh. I downloaded the Fifa demo from the eShop in <30min last night and the update was about 30min. I guess it's still Nintendo's fault if it is poorly coded wifi with certain routers though.

Exactly. I've just come to expect that when you buy a launch console these days, you almost have to accept the bumps and pitfalls that go along with it. There are definitely aspects of the Wii U that are currently disappointing, but I have hope that they are being worked on and in general, I'm having a great experience with it.

Ugh, updated last night it took an hour to download and 15 minuites to install, why is this so fucking slow? Everything in the OS is still slow as hell. 20 seconds to load into the settings menu, and about 20 seconds to bounce back out to the home screen, this is just pathetic.

Had my system hardlock 3 times in ~2 hours playing NSMBU. Prior to this, I hadn't had a single lockup. SMH!

PSN or PS Store? PSN is the whole network (gaming and all apps (Netflix, Vidzone etc.)). The PS Store is fast for me once it has loaded. I havnt noticed any slower download speed either. The only bigger negative thing about the new PS Store in my opinion is that some of the smaller games gets "hidden" since they are usually not listed under the first "Latest" tab. I wish there was a "New This Week" tab, like the old PS Store has.

Out of curiousity, what do you find cumbersome with the new PS Store search? Personally i find it very easy to use (better than the old search actually). I like that it "auto completes" while searching, it narrows down the possibilities for each letter you chose.

Just a guess, but I think it has to do with Router's. We have people claiming to be on fast connections and still having problems while others have no issues.

Yeah, it could be some router connection issues as well, indeed.

it finally downloaded. I decided to leave it on overnight and hope for the best and when I woke up the console was off. turned it on and the update had downloaded and installed, no idea how long it took, but before I went to sleep, the timer read 3hrs, 54mins.

terrible service from nintendo. to contrast, I received my ps vita today, turned it on and found my network within minutes and downloaded its various updates within 15 minutes. a quick check through the menu showed it was using my full connection, the problem with nintendo updated definitely lies in their servers / infrastructure.

With all seriousness and without wanting to troll, it's easier to have a stable network for a one year old console who doesn't sell compared to a one month old console during its launch hype.
