You guys are just like those indoctrination theory pushers. The makers of the game are not smart enough to do this.....

I disagree.
Everything so far seemed to be there for a reason and have a significance.

What people didn't understand is, there's no GZ or PP: THIS is the actual game.
That's what they meant when they said the game would launch sooner than people expect.
It's already on !
It's like a global treasure hunt; finding clues on whois, straightening pics and feeding them to google, finding links and matching clues with Kojima's tweets from the past few months is what MGS5 is about; becoming the secret agent yourself.

It's just the sort of meta-gaming Kojima would do.

(joking...to an extent though)

For me Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are two games.
Ill wait for any further info.

Are people taking crazy pills? Why would a developer show off two separate games in the same series at the same time? Why would a developer split their resources like that?

I think the original plan was to release MGS4 and MGO as separate releases at the same time, and they had a team for each, so er, i dunno.

If he was being told that it's a game called "The Phantom Pain" then the statement is true.

Edit: And let's not act like Twitter is legally binding.

He'd not lie though, not our Geoff!

Didn't Keighly said it was a stand alone game that hasn't been shown before??

This was Geoffs tweet:
"Thanks for all the VGA feedback. The Phantom Pain is a completely game, nothing that has been shown before. I assure you of that."

Im not convinced though. I know its foolish to feel that way but until I hear Kojima himself say that they are two separate titles, I dont believe it. For all we know, Keighly is going along with the joke.

There's a pretty big difference between developing two feature complete games with individual campaigns and developing 1 of the above and a multiplayer mode released stand-alone.

Square Enix did it.
With three games in fact, FFXIII, Versus XIII and FFXIV

I think the joke will go along for some time, maybe opening the box for Ground Zeroes will reveal a misprint and some weird swedish game is inside instead.

But I believe Ground Zeroes is the game that was described, multiple large open worlds, the demo being a smaller one, multiplayer mode, building a base and being able to walk around it, flying to different maps/countries, calling in helicopters and air strikes. Does any of that fit with what was in the PP trailer?

Peace Walker and MGS Rising then? They were for different platforms but announced on the same day.

I think GZ and PP are two separate "things" but they are tied together somehow, maybe Kojima is experimenting something new, maybe one day he will truly "shake" the industry and maybe this is what he was reffering to.

Personally I don't believe in the theory abou this being acts of MGS V/5 but I could be wrong with Kojima you never know...

Or he just doesn't know any better. I don't see any reason why he (or anyone outside KojiPro) would be filled in on any details apart from "Oh, btw, we have this awesome new trailer for a new game we'd like you to show..."

How realistic is it that some new, unknown studio would get their trailer aired at the VGAs?

Yeah, I think they could even be packaged together, but they look like different entities with different concepts.

what can really fit into pp from that trailer? i mean the only thing we can assume was gameplay was the crawling and unless the entire game is tripping over medical equipment i think it is just too early to tell.

I'm not saying he doesn't know the trailer came from Konami. I'm saying he doesn't know any details beyond that (ie. whether it's a new never before seen game or not, that's just his spur of the moment assumption is more likely).

I'm just wading into this thread for the first time and I'm kind of shocked by the speculation in here.

I have no doubt in my mind that the GZ and PP trailers have simply depicted separate chapters (ala MGS4) withing one game that will be called Metal Gear Solid 5. I can't even comprehend how people could think otherwise.

Hint: It's the same game.

I thought this was always assumed? After seeing the Ground Zeroes trailer, I was fairly certain that there was no way it wasn't just a temporary title. FOX engine debut, expanded gameplay ideas, clearly a huge budget - it's got to be MGS5.

Also, anyone saying that Kojima wouldn't/isn't smart enough (dumb enough?) to do something like this really must have limited experience with the Metal Gear franchise.

This would be funny. They could put all sorts of easter eggs in the game or do some shit where if you put the disc in your PC, you can view some weird files.

I see your point but, if they are the same game, Id imagine it being something where GZ is the Prologue and something happens at the end of it. PP is the opening of the next chapter. PPs trailer just doesnt go on long enough to move into the gameplay and open world side of things and instead focuses solely on the cinematics.

I love speculating about stuff like this but youre absolutely right, we dont know. We just have to wait for the next trailer and see what it gives us.

I wonder how long we have to wait. Kojima said that GZ isnt too far off and some rumors suggest that it releases next year. PP already has English voices but, just a few months ago, GZ did not. If GZ comes out soon, Id assume that another trailer isnt too far off. E3 seems like a long time from now to make us wait.

In the past we had to wait for E3 and TGS to get MGS trailers but now we get a GZ trailer at its own, special event and a PP trailer at the VGAs. Who knows when the next one will be shown.

Yup. If this is indeed a KojiPro game, we know that theyre known for being very secretive with their stuff. Would Kojima just let Keighly on the inside like that? I doubt it.

They did ?

Yup. They had a trailer where they showed MGS4s version of Shadow Moses with Young Snake running around inside it. All they did was had Old Snake wear the Young Snake mask. We didnt know any better at the time, though.

We shall see. There's definitely gameplay in PP trailer, I can't say if it's good gameplay, but it's interactive, the missing arm happening straight after Camp Omega doesn't jive with the Diamond Dogs artwork and early Ogre screens which appear to show Big Boss with 2 arms, but they could be misleading.

“I can’t really say too much about that project yet, but it’s a very subdued experience – it’s a little bit different to what I’ve done up until now,” he says. “On the surface it will look similar, but once you get into it, it will be a different experience – and I’m hoping people look forward to that. But the Ogre project is going to take a lot of time, so I want to produce some other things on the side, like I’m doing with Rising. So while I’m working on Ogre there might be a couple of other projects going on at the same time.”

So is this Ground Zeroes rebranded? Or is the guy who "doesn't want to be known as the MGS guy" actually have three Metal Gear games in the works?

It's Ground Zeroes. This is just viral marketing for one of the segments in the game. They're prepping for US teasers/trailers soon. I guess it was their way of showing that the game has deep in progression, with US voice actors already assigned and what not.

That or Kojima is trolling everyone.

I'm starting to lean on the side that Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes are one game, but the one thing that gives me pause is that Ground Zeroes seems like a Peace Walker style game where you go from enemy base to enemy base and in the process build up Outer Heaven/Mother Base. Whereas Phantom Pain seems like it could be a more linear survival/horror game. If Phantom Pain is just one segment of a larger game, I'm not sure how Big Boss goes back to being a bad ass soldier raiding enemy bases right away with just one arm.

Phantom Pain, to me, is an early mini-boss fight. Similar to the death sequence in MGS3 or Psycho Mantis in MGS1. It'll either be hallucination or a dream sequence. Maybe he breaks his arm and is sedated. In comes Psycho Mantis making him believe he lost his arm in the process.

Either that or he does lose the arm, is sedated due to that, was in coma, Psycho Mantis does fuck shit up, he escapes, and then he gets a cyborg arm.

I want him back as Big Boss. :(

They kind of painted themselves into a corner by having him be old Big Boss in MGS4 but having Hayter play Big Boss in MGS3 & Peace Walker. I wonder how it would have turned out if they had Hayter do Big Boss in MGS4.

While I'm psyched for Ground Zeroes I'd be a little disappointed if Ground Zeroes is what the bulk of MGSV is just because Phantom Pain looks so wildly different than previous MGS games and I'm up for something a little different but still in the Metal Gear universe. I'd love to play a large part of a game with a character who is missing an arm. And I love the idea of Big Boss being so fucked up physically and mentally. I thought in MGS3 he was fucked up pretty badly after being thrown off a bridge, surviving a nuclear blast, losing an eye, getting beat to a pulp by Volgin, and then killing his mentor. But Phantom Pain seems to up the stakes. This could be what makes him snap and go to the lengths that he does in Metal Gear 1 & 2.

I was hoping they'd just go ahead and make the switch for Big Boss. It was really misleading when they used Doyle's voice in the first Peace Walker trailer, then switched it up to Hayter when he first spoke.

The more I think about it, the more I think that its Psycho Mantis mind-fuckery on Big Boss.
I dont see it being an actual "fight" with Big Boss just waking from a coma and having to defeat someone but, then again, he is Big Boss and this is Metal Gear so anything can happen.

If its Mantis, I do hope for several sections of craziness. His bits in MGS1 were so memorable and reliving some of that in MGS4 was great as well. Kojimas mind really runs wild when he brings in paranormal and supernatural fights like that and the whole thing could be really great.

I think the arm is actually gone and everything else is just mind tricks.
Im excited to see if they do any gameplay tricks with a one armed Snake. Hooking guards throats instead of slicing them, only being able to shoot one handed, etc.

Yeah, I have a feeling he'll be one of the first during his time to get arm transplant. Could be a throwback at Liquid Ocelot.

Either that, or he was captured and tortured similar to Gray Fox, who gets his nose and ears cut off. Most likely Big Boss went to coma due to excessive torture, and wakes up to Psycho Mantis' shit crashing down.

For all the crap I want to give Kojima for MGS4 (sorry guys, gameplay was good but it's the game that made me sick of Kojima cinematics) this shows he still "has" it whatever it is, even though it didn't fool many people for long. Still pulling crazy stuff when revealing his games. All of that is going to be MGS5 for sure but I want to see what he'll come up with next.

Since I don't have and won't be buying a PS3 just for one game, I'm about to watch a 3 hour movie version of MGS4. I'm hyped for insanity.

Exactly what I thought, and the title related to the pain caused by a limb that is not here anymore...or by people not here anymore (Boss, Volgin...phantom/ghost)

I have never played an MGS game save for about one hour I spent against Twin Snakes on the Gamecube years ago (I took a lift, went through a small snow area into that building and through a vent but I could not get any further, I had no clue about what I was doing).

That said, I have treated myself to reading the last 20 or so pages in this thread and I am really amazed about how little I am understanding and how convoluted this whole series is. I am really tempted to play the games during the xmas break and january, I actually have all of them except the original (I sold that copy of Twin Snakes). I have to check if MGS can be bought on PSN for the PSP Go (it should be there I imagine). Then the other 4 games on the PS3.

Skip MGS4 and the PSP games. Although, I suppose you would benefit from playing Peace Walker if you plan on getting into Ground Zeroes.
