what should Nintendo do to put a stop to consumer confusion about what the Wii U is?

there have already been several stories about people thinking it's an add-on for the wii, a new portable and even the press seems lost.

they need to clear this up asap, because otherwise once they'll release the standalone gamepad for sale in both US and EU this is gonna get ugly.

so what should nintendo do at this point?

i do not really think that changing the name of the hw is feasible, and that could actually even make it worst.
so what? put a disclaimer on every single console box, game box and at the beginning of every commercial?

edit:
i know most of you guys are going to say "name it Wii2", but honestly hasn't that ship sailed?
rebranding the whole thing would cost a fortune now

Confusion isn't as big a deal as people make it out to be. Even if the public thinks it's a $350 controller add-on, they'll see those blue boxes and know that they need this new thing to play those games, and buy that thing the kids are pointing at.

They gotta stop pimping their brands on everything. DS to 3DS. Wii to WiiU. Just name them DS2 or Wii2 at the LEAST. Or something new at the most. Not some shitty middle ground.

They're not apple, who can get away with The New iPad.

The blue boxes are enough anyway.

"Oh, I can't play those blue box games with what I have? But the kids want to play that game they played at a friend's house. Give me what I need to play this."

Also NintendoLand is a pretty damn evangelical game. I know like 5 people that have been sold because of it.

Make commercials/ads/whatever

AND JUST SAY WHAT THE FUCK IT IS

A new home console with a tablet controller, no PR bogus

seriously guys, don't you think that ship has sailed?

No?

Just man up and do a "relaunch" under a different name with different marketing. Every other thing stays the same (hardware, pricing) but the name + ads are new.

People who already bought it are not impacted in any way by this move. New buyers will be interested in "Wii 2" and finally, the media, will get it correct this time.

Everyone wins! The only dowside is that rebranding costs money but hey banks, telecoms etc. do it all the time.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
In a way, Nintendo UK's marketing was the best.
The commercials all clearly stated "A brand new console with a brand new controller".

Or they could copy the UK 3DS marketing -
"This is not a DS. This is 3DS!"

"This is not a Wii. This is a Wii U!"

what about games?
Zombi U wouldn't make much sense anymore

Let Mario stomp on the Wii and then take a Wii U out of his pocket

that one would be great actually

Nintendo's brand new HD console, the WiiU! Featuring all new playable titles like ___ ___ ___, backwards compatible with all your current Wii games, controllers, and accessories. The new WiiU tablet creates game experiences never before experienced, out now for $300!

Seriously make that into a commercial with flashy lights and lots of gameplay, not hard for consumers to get.

Show games in ads that aren't full of miis too. Miis look no different on the Wii U than on the Wii.

Uh, what?

Outside of artstyle they're different.

Edit: Oh you said games. The difference is even bigger.

Nintendo's never, ever done that.

The Wii U was a logical step if you look it from Nintendo's history:

NES -> SNES

GB -> GBC

DS -> 3DS

I just wish the "U" meant something...that might make it a bit more substantial.

"Wii Ultra," or something like that.

It's highly ironic that the Japanese TV advertisement for WiiU calls it a "very Super Wii."

Maturity, bitches.
I think some people need to spend a little time in business class if they think they can just change the name.

Nintendo just has to do what they did with the 3DS and drill into people minds it isn't just the Wii but a new system called the Wii U.

Oh and Wii 2 is such a boring name. Can't believe people want that.
