GAF, is Xenoblade getting snubbed?

Sorry, I should of made it clear I was asking about the original. Anyway thanks for answering.

I was just wondering about your opinion on that game, because like Alpha Protocol it was one of the few(it might just be those two now that I think about it) RPG/Shooter hybrids that I personally thought were more RPG then shooter. Which probably explains why both of them are terrible shooters.

I think what we're finding out here is that you can attempt both but you're going to fail at both unless you put a focus on 1 or the other. The classic jack of all trades but master of none saying. What frustrates us (Gaf) is that most of the time they pick the shooter side because they think it'll sell more like that.

Oh maaaaaaaaaaan, that's depressing on a surprising number of levels.

Japanese developers these days have a weird (but not necessarily unjustified or unreasonable) inferiority complex these days, especially when it comes to comparisons with the West.

One one of the major reasons Xenoblade got so much attention and positive reaction in this country was BECAUSE it wasn't yet another major Western RPG. It was a refreshing look back at classic JRPGs with some new twists from the West thrown in for good measure along with one of the more creative and colorful worlds we've seen in an RPG in a while. What it did was help show that there's still room for growth and innovation in the old JRPG genre. There are a few other games that have been released in the last couple years that have also done the same, but I think it's fair to say that Xenoblade was by far the most polished of the bunch.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Takahashi and team learned from this "experiment."

That's just how the internet is with things that don't get media attention. If you can't filter out the nutjobs... well, that's a shitty problem to have, I suppose.

Then again, if it's shooting discussion of an entire genre in the knees then that's a bigger problem than I figured.

Well then, I guess Sonic Generations is my GOTY. :P

Ha well I wasn't going to vote for it but when I saw it was eligible it just felt wrong to put anything else there.

I think so but it's such a niche game it's hard to get recognition. Plus it was on the wii which didn't help. Hell, even I bought it and then loaded it up on dolphin to play it

How many people have played it doesn't matter unless the award is "Most Played Game". Why do people keep bringing this up?

Super overrated game, I wouldn't say so. I feel like some people were just starved for a JRPGs. Not the worst game in the world, but definitely not a best of the year title.

Mass Effect and Star Trek in the same sentence, let alone saying the former is comparable to the latter? No...just no.

Not that many people played it and let's be honest here: who doesn't get the feeling that mainstream game critics don't care much for jrpgs?

I could see a return to form of Final Fantasy winning over western rpgs or the newest game in the souls series which is anything but a traditional jrpg.

I remember a video on gametrailers where they were discussing the 2012 year so far and the consensus was that it was a boring/crappy year. One guy said that Xenoblade was his goty at that point and everyone else went... (I don't think anyone else even played the freaking thing which is insane giving that we were at the end of august or beginning of september). Imo it just prove that most mainstream critics in the west couldn't care less for jrpgs. :P Ni No Kuni better be amazing to even be remembered at the end of 2013.

Well, I feel pretty snubbed looking up the game and seeing that it's $60+ on Amazon. I was looking to pick it up some time next year...probably won't be affordable by then.

:(

Newsbreak

"Journalists" hate nintendo.

Seriously accorsing to them "experts" Nintendo never made any game that was remotely good and is already third party or bankrupt

Also the real story is that the superior RPG Last Story doesbt even get mentioned..

So yeah I stopped caring about GOTYs ages ago and Im reaffirmed every year

Hilarious that it came from two people with Star Trek avatars. Guess it's obvious what we think of Star Trek!

I don't care about mainstream gaming media since it became obsolete once I discovered GAF. Xenoblade is one of my favorite RPGs and I'm happy that a traditional JRPG exists on a last generation consoles since most of were awful except for a few very very few, I'm speaking less than five fingers few.

This is by far my favorite piece of music in the game.

i agree, and it's really saying something, because there are other tracks i deem fantastic. this is just so alien, but it's beautiful and fits the game too.

beyond good & evil has a wonderful piece of music, home sweet home. i consider mechonis fields a very close second, or even its equal.

I think the problem is that it isn't "new." If it had been released like a normal game — that is, all regions within the same year, instead of being spread out over a three year period — it would have made more of an impact. To the majority, Xenoblade is either old news or they have never heard of/played it.

And really guys, calling Xenoblade overrated?

Name me a better RPG for the Wii. It earned the praise.

It's not cool to praise JRPG's this gen, hasn't anyone told you?

A real shame, because it's probably the best RPG on those lists.

As much as I want Xenoblade to win as many awards as possible, given that these types of awards are pretty much popularity contests it will probably never win awards in the west because it's in the... is there a term for anti-zeitgeist?

But what offends me most is not Xenoblade being snubbed, but the fact that Mass Effect 3, a game with barely -if not any- mechanical RPG parts won. Where the fuck is Torchlight 2? That should've won RPG of the year if not Xenoblade. I'd even take Diablo 3 for Christ's sake, because that's actually an RPG.

Pretty strange that Mass effect is still making RPG of the anything lists. These video game blogs just dont care anymore I guess.

Only for the Wii huh. Isn't that a little unfair since the praise usually isn't just "It's the best RPG for the Wii." instead it's more along the lines of "It's the best RPG of this generation, if not of all time."

I adore Xenoblade (and it annoys me to no end that it, of course, has been overlooked in favor of "true next-gen games"), but the praise it gets/has gotten really is a little much.

Of course, anyone who hasn't played Xenoblade should get on that. (Looking at you, IrishNinja.)

The thing is, why people who read GAF would really care about those lists?...

We support the sites by making threads about their linkbait. Then the websites can survive to create more linkbait for us to talk about.

It's the circle of life.

Trying to name a better RPG for the Wii is an awfully low bar to set! What's more apt is a better JRPG in recent years, and while there's others I really liked (and if we're throwing in Demon's Souls/Dark Souls I actually DO have two at least I consider superior) it's still amongst the top 5 this generation, and the best of new US releases this year.
