Game Freak To Evolve Pokémon World Further In 2013

I don't think I'll be able to enjoy another mainline pokemon game after playing through the Blaze Black / Volt White hacks. They just improve it so much for someone who's played almost all the mainline games already...

Those hacks are stupid.

I don't like how these topics always are degraded into gen wars. Each has good designs and bad. Most people, being older on this forum, play off of nostalgia. We get it, you don't like the new designs.

On topic, I also expect a sixth generation on the 3DS by the year's end.

I'm most curious about what happens on Wii U. GamePad and Miiverse functionality could breed very interesting gameplay.

Will QA for food.
Sure, I have seen some great designs, but most of them suck.

Yeah, no.

Someone doesn't like Chandelure. Mind blown.

I can answer this easily... MMOs don't make money. Name 1 company aside from Blizzard that's made a lot of money on MMOs in the last 5 years.

I think Square?

Pokemon is way bigger than Final Fantasy or Warcraft ever was. I'm certain a Pokemon MMO would be a success, not sure if Nintendo would be able to pull it off properly, though.

Leave only the first 251 pokemon.
Using every single town in every pokemon game, make a MMORPG.
Infinite money.

If it's every place in the whole Pokemon world, why so few Pokemon? Across 5+ regions you have plenty of time and use for more than just the OG. I'd love a game where I can visit Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova in one go, but what's the point if the whole gamut isn't at my disposal?

Except Jellicent. Jellicent can go to hell.

We'll probably know within the next month or two if Gen 6 is coming, anyway. I remember back in 2010 that they casually said something along the lines of "Oh yeah, new Pokemon games are coming later this year" sometime in January, with an official reveal a couple months later.

HG/SS and B/W 2 were both announced in February too. Announcing right at the beginning of the year is the sweet spot for them to start planning marketing and all that.

EDIT:
And you can't just not like one of the best fire types ever. Picking on Chandelure isn't cool.

Not that I want a Pokémon MMORPG or even think it's a good idea, but plenty of MMORPGs have made tons of money and continue to do so. There have been lots of colossal failures, too, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of money to be made in the genre.

Please, tell me which ones have made tons of money. Truly curious, give me some MMOs in the last 5 years who've made tons of money.

And of those 5, how many of those AREN'T P2W? I think we can all agree, we don't want any pokemon MMO that's P2W.

I'm gonna say no thanks on a pkmn mmo. The grinding would be one thing, but having to deal with a bunch of people perching a spot while you're searching for a certain pokemon seems like a massive pain in the ass.

Them Korean/Eastern MMOs generally spin money.

Before I answer that, I need you to define what "tons of money" means to you so we don't end up dealing with moving goal posts.

Lots of games make large profits relative to the company's size. If all you're looking for is WoW levels of success, then you're not going to find much else besides WoW.

Good to hear.

Still i've got no problem with them keeping the 2D RPG format. Black 2 was the best entry in the series (remakes aside) in years.

Just want one which makes full use of the 3DS features.

Names? And are they P2W?

Yes I'm well aware the correct/simple answer is "korean/eastern MMOs" but I'd really love some names and preferably numbers as well. If people want to talk how great and successful a pokemon MMO would be it would be useful for comparison's sake.

(edit) Zefaw: Prudent to ask the question, but yes... I'd be satisfied with "a large sum compared to the company that makes it."

Though knowing if they were "pay 2 win" or gatchapon inspired would be useful too.

Does GameFreak have no ambition?

Whether or not you enjoy the way the games are, I'm more curious what it's like for them as developers.

Do they genuinely enjoy not having to change very much, or do they actually have serious discussions about changing things but always end up deciding that things are better the way they are? Or are they just so burdened by the enormity of the Pokemon brand that they can't afford to take risks?

Anyone know how many people work on the mainline Pokemon titles?

I just want to be able to move in 8 directions for once.

The move "left, right,up,down only" is seriously outdated.

I think the best thing would be a semi-mmo thing for Pokemon. It's in 3D, you can go around catching pokemon and battling gyms in a singleplayer world. It has all the regions, but the multiplayer would be specific "dungeons" or arenas where you battle other people and only there. The dungeons or raids whatever could be like, infiltrate Team Rocket's HQ. I think the most people that would be able to do this is like a party of 3 people, then you can have triple battles or rotation battles. In the arenas it would just be PvP tournaments and such.

That would fuck up a lot of systems related to "steps" in Pokemon games.

Above all else, they need to fix the pacing in these games. Black 2 was awful in that sense. Less unskippable dialogue please.

There were a bunch of interviews that came out back in September with two guys from Game Freak from which I remember Masuda saying that he looks at the gameplay of Pokémon to be kind of like a sport, where certain rules may change over time, but the core stays the same. He also said they throw everything out the window and start from scratch when making a new title, but the really good elements always end up finding their way back into the games.

Nexon makes a nice mint. In former years I know maple story did a lot for them.

A recent article related to their revenue growth (2010)

Nexon's financial statements can be found here :

I havent looked at them so I cant tell you if they break it down on a per game basis.

Would a Pokemon MMO even work? Like, most of the fanbase are made of children, would they really purchase and subscribe to an MMO just because it has Pokemon in the title?

Interesting. I feel like pokemon is full of untapped potential, but I suppose he's right, it's not in the area of mechanics. It's more in the presentation and story-telling.

But I don't see why we can't have both a sleek, exciting adventure and a set of grounded, tried-and-tested battle mechanics.

Free Realms does pretty well.

Seriously, anything Pokemon would sell. Something actually good would sell way more.

There should be a nostalgia switch set at the beginning of the game allowing you to choose which gen the game exists in. That way people like me could pick Gen I/II and play in peace while others could pick the latest and greatest and enjoy their game. That way everyone would be happy, right?

I still can't believe there's no 3D Pokemon rpg...

There is, the Gamecube Pokemon games. Colosseum and XD.

I don't know why these are always associated with "but...", they are 3D Pokemon RPGs. The only thing they aren't are main entries. But that doesn't mean they aren't 3D Pokemon RPGs.

I prefer Pokemon to remain as it is. It's not broke, don't fix it. Every gen has done something to distinguish it from the previous, and that's enough for me. I've seen what radical progression has done to so many franchises these days and I'd like it if some franchises not go that route.

Homeland Security Fail
I gave up hope a long time ago, for a 3D game. That has honestly killed my love for the franchise.
