Is Walking Dead pc saves still broke?

Infuriating. I wonder if I can push for a refund on Steam despite owning the game since Episode 1. Probably not gonna happen...

I bought it on Mac during the Steam sale. Played through the first episode and half of the second, and then lost my saves. Tried the trick to recover them and it didn't work. I'm never buying a Telltale game again.

It's really quite insane.

Carrying saved between episode is arguably the most important part of this game, and yet they have failed spectacularly.

Tied to the Gaming Journalism megathread, has this been commented on by any media outlets? Maybe a little publicity will make Telltale step up.

I played through all 5 episodes without a problem? Is this a completely random issue?
Yep, it at least seems that way. I had some graphical glitches and the final achievement never unlocked, but luckily I was spared from save game issues.

Some heat from the media is probably the only thing that might make Telltale to do something.

Mine lost track of the saves between episode 3 and 4. None of the tricks involving the prefs file worked for me sadly. Why they kept the bones of what I assume is the console save system instead of allowing people to navigate to a save file is beyond me.

I'm still having this issue with the 360 version to be honest, and am in the process of trying to get a refund.

It has broken 3 times on me, and the latest time was around 45 mins into episode 5.

I contacted MS (seeing as I paid them for the game on their store) but the have directed me to Telltale, who so far - and google shows I'm not alone - have completely ignored my email.

I keep clicking on this thread hoping for a proper solution but...nope.

I really want to see this game through to the end but it's looking like I may never be able to.

Same. I can't get past episode 1. Tried to play the ep for about the 4th time; this time, it's not remembering my choices when I move on to ep 2.

Telltale has the worst post-game support I have ever encountered in a games company. They simply do not appear to give a shit.

I played through the whole game with
Kenny thinking that I didn't defend duck in the pharmacy. Even though I totally did and it even reflects in my choices
. So yeah, its still busted for me.

Did they ever fix that game breaking bug in Back to the Future?

I bought the game around 3 weeks ago and finished it this weekend. I didn't have a problem with saves disappearing or being corrupt.

I did have a problem with preferences not carrying over, which I dealt with by manually copying over the prefs file after completing each episode.

This is how I got it to work after initially losing my save and having to replay episode 1. As has been mentioned in the thread, there are two prefs.prop files in different directories that the game creates. Each time I exited the game, I looked at both files to see which had a newer modified time. I copied the "newer" file over the "older" file in the other directory, so that I had the newer file in both places. Once I started doing that after each exit I had no additional problems.

Really wanted to buy this for my dad, who loves zombies and the show and this seems like a dad-friendly game...but really don't want this bug to ruin it for him.

Lost all my save data after completing episode 3, Just had 3 empty save slots with no logical explanation. The save data was all there in the folder but the game just couldn't read it.

Eventually I discovered the time stamp altering method and managed to fix it however some of the choices were still messed up.

How on earth can this colossal game breaking issue not have been addressed by now. This game has gone onto win numerous awards and yet it remains utterly broken (on the PC at least although iv'e heard of issues with save data on consoles too).

Telltale get your flippin act together...

It's broken as fuck. I was able to get my Episode 2 save to work, somehow. But after I finished Episode 3, it was trashed. I had to play Ep 4 with the default choices, and I played Ep 5 immediately after just so it wouldn't fuck up again.

It's a pity, the game has a great story, but the save system is some straight up incompetent shit.

What I would do if I played it over is turn off Steam Cloud sync for this game before I started. I am pretty sure something going awry there is what's causing this.

was nominated for PCGamer GOTY.

huh.

Well, like we see with Bethesda games, sometimes a game is so good it overcomes technical issues. Even though my experience with the saves was frustrating, I wouldn't blame anyone for choosing it as GOTY. I personally disagree (Xcom baby!), but Walking Dead is up there.

I never had any issues, but I got the entire game with all five episodes. Guess I won't be getting into Season 2 until the entire game has shipped again.

I am on a Mac, not using Steam, and have started over with all 5 episodes; same issue. Choices not remembering between ep 1 and 2, effectively meaning I can't move on.

Waste of money.

My best advice, after having had multiple times dealing with corrupted saves is this:

-Disable Steam Cloud (that can mess with the preference file, which tells the game which save file to look for)

-Back-up your save folder at least semi-regularly (whenever you quit?). Your prefs file is in two places, the save folder in youu documents->telltale and also in the steam folders under data->bulk (I think that's right). I believe the game checks the steam folder first (which is where steam cloud can hose you) before checking the documents.

-If you have a working prefs file, you SHOULD be able to get going again. Just rename your latest save from a different folder, to the latest save that coordinates with a working prefs file.

-For instance, you backed up twice during each episode. Each folder you backed up has a working prefs file, and has 5, 9, 14, 18 saves (whatever the number is). In each folder, that prefs file tells the game that Save slot one corresponds to X save (5, 9, 14, 18 etc). If you have a corruption, back-up your save folder, then replace it with a working save folder. Then swap out the latest save (save file 18 for instance) with your latest save from your borked folder.

-Note, this will mess up your rewind ability, but it has gotten me playing again twice now on borked prefs files, and it's better than having to start over.

It's really unfortunate that Telltale is rushing their games so badly and then leave them as they are.

I just noticed that the PS3 version is missing the title screen of the last episode. It just shows a black screen with zombie noises for a while lol. They probably don't even test it once.

Man this thing is bullshit. So i desisted for trying to continue using my save, so i started a new episode 4 game... i played for half and hour and when i launch the game later, bam! No save file again, so i guess i have to play it in one sitting.

Oh yeah, forgot to post again in this thread. I sat down a few days ago and did my best to fix my saves, but to no avail. The saves were completely fucked, so I said fuck it and deleted everything Walking Dead from my computer. Maybe one day I'll attempt to sit through the whole thing in one sitting, since it seems that's required.
Really disappointed in Telltale's handling of this. Studio of the year, everyone! Lol..

Was planning on buying this when its on sale... (for pc) but i really dont want to deal with a gamesave bug. I lost my GTAIV save file and that was annoying enough as i hate playing things through twice

I got it to work using this method. Just finished it. Had to use Windows to rename the files so I could play it on my Mac.
1. To fix this you'll need a time stamp editor so Google, download and install (here are some timestamp programs; I used the second from the bottom http://code.google.com/p/stexbar/downloads/list ).
2. Locate where the saves are actually found (My Documents\Tell Tale\Walking Dead)
3. Create a backup folder and transfer all your saves to it.
4. Create a new game in the Episode you were on and play until it saves.
5. Quit and check the folder, you should see a new save.
6. Write down the last modified date of this new save file (to the second).
7. Go into your backup folder and find your latest save.
8. Right-Click > Properties > Time Stamp.
9. Change the time of this file to match the new save exactly.
10. Rename old save to match the newly created Save game and replace (ie. if the new save is save_6.sav rename the save you want to use to this and replace the new one).

Your game will now see your save fine.

They dropped the ball on this. It's obvious that a lot of loving care went into the story and the characters of this game. I can't believe they'd release it like this. The game just deserves better.

Got through the game, but had to copy my preferences file from documents to the steam directory twice. Great game otherwise. Hopefully they at least figure out these issues for future games since they're probably not gonna come back and fix this one.

I bought this for my wife for Christmas. I bought the xbox 360 disc version. She had to stop playing after a few minutes because she was unable to advance due to freezing/skipping. Why isn't this a bigger issue? The Telltale support forum is littered with these kinds of stories and so far there isn't a response. I am encouraging others to contact the Better Business Bureau and major retailers that they are selling a defective product.

Yep I filed a complaint.

Somewhat on topic...

If I have played episode 1 digitally on my ps3, but want to buy the retail disc for the remaining 4 episodes, will I be able to pick up at episode 2 with all the choices I made?

This will only help PC users (sorry 360 users), but there is a file called "prefs.prop" located in two different Walking Dead folders.

Use your search function, and you will find it (you are very unlikely to have another prefs.prop file on your computer, unless you played another Telltale game like their Monkey Island episodic game).

One of the files should be in with your save games, the other should be in a folder called "Default."

MAKE BACKUPS OF BOTH FILES BEFORE YOU DO THE NEXT STEP!!!!

Overwrite the smaller (by size) file with the bigger one (copy and paste, leave the bigger file in its original folder as well).

Do this every time you exit the game (I know, it is a pain).

Presto, your save is in tact. Sometimes, the game will still ask if you'd like to generate decisions, just say "Yes." I can vouch that your previous decisions will be in tact.

Extra misc. info: The reason your save is "disappearing" is because the save file simply contains the data for where you are in the game. The decisions are saved in the prefs.prop file (which is also your settings). The two files constantly get out of sync with each other, causing the problem. The saves are still there, but the game thinks you haven't made decisions yet, meaning you couldn't possibly be in, for example, Episode 4.

Why are there two separate prefs.prop files? No clue.

I bought it last sale, not looking forward to playing it now lol. I had my save files lost with Arkham City thanks to GFWL, after I played like 50 hours..

yeah it still borked. Mine lost my save at the end of episode 4, had to generate a new story for episode 5.
All that shit for nothing.

Bought this on Steam and the fucking game won't even start! Click the Play button in Steam and the game crashes immediately. Fucking Telltale. At least The WarZ would launch.

I just now realized I don't have a single achievement in the game on Steam despite completely finishing the first episode a bit ago. I'm going to assume that's not normal since a few of the achievements look to be just story progression related.

Going to start episode 2 in a bit, hope I don't run into the save bug.
