I feel that it was an important scene for the same reason Grzi mentioned.
It wasn't so much about story importance, rather than the tone it set. In the middle of a big battle between armies, it reminded everyone that the world in Berserk is not the normal world, but one where monsters and gods exist.

To continue playing devil's advocate...perhaps they felt it didn't fit the specific tone of the movie and what they wanted to emphasize this time around, for better or for worse, considering the first film had already established that there are some supernatural elements at work. I think we all know the original manga had more than enough elbow room to insert little bits and pieces of build-up or foreshadowing, but it's clear these movies are simply telling a very abridged version of the story.

Plus,
it helps develop the relationship of Zodd and Guts, gives us a small insight into Zodd's interest in Guts and I think some of the stuff later on in the manga makes more sense with it happening (the two of them cooperating in the battle against Ganishka).

Some strange thoughts about how they edit blu-rays for animation/anime.

I recently picked up both of the Platinum collections for the looney toons shorts - they had everything right but the aspet ratio (it was 4:3 safe for some stupid reason even though the shorts were done in 2K from the early 1940's onwards). This is the same problem the trekkies found out with Star Trek (TOS and TNG) - its 4:3 safe but the film was the same used on I Love Lucy (which can go widescreen in TOS case) and a fuckon of mid 1980's TV series (in TNG's) case.

I mean i loved the blu-ray but this a problem with a lot of animation/anime and some of the pre 1953 movies. I mean its a wonderful life has been poked, prodded, and still is in 4:3 for no good reason. Even CBS stated when they were making the TOS blu-rays that they did had extra info on the negivtives but it would show "too much of the set" which is bullshit ballfaced lie. Im just disspointed Jerry Beck and his squad spend so much work on this and they cant downconvert a 2K image to widescreen like they can do on a majority of the films... Anime has a bit of an excuse - but even when they have the original cells they cant even get it widescreen. I want to call it lazyness or lack of good video production but Sony Took 4 YEARS for Arabia and it came out perfect. Why not the same care if not the same time for these series?

There was extra information in the negatives, but the shots weren't framed to be shown in 16:9, even if there weren't boom mics and lights hanging around everywhere in the edge of the shot which there was (I'm not sure why you think they're lying about this). It doesn't have anything to do with being lazy or they didn't know what they were doing, it was about preserving the OAR. Lawrence of Arabia was shot on 70mm and intended to be shown on wide screens, it's not like Sony put in some extra effort to make it widescreen.

So we're getting concrete information about the adaptation of the next six books.

Meanwhile there is still no release date for Kizu...

Okay, so I'm currently watching the second Berserk movie and I was actually enjoying it, much more than the first one that's for sure. Must be the extremely lowered expectations.
So here comes the battle for Doldrey, and god motherfucking damn, these IDIOTS changed my favorite moment :(((((((((((((((((((((
They destroyed the most perfect scene.
There's no Zodd, he doesn't throw his sword to Guts, Guts' sword doesn't break, he just beats the general and that's it, it sucks, it's boring, it's stupid, it lacks that impact of the original scene, that small touch of fantasy that made that battle special, it ruined the entire motherfucking film for me and now I don't even feel like finishing it. I don't get it, why would you do that, it doesn't make sense. Fuck this shit.

And I usually hate these types of rants, it just pissed me off so much.

That's some Bullshit

You could ostensibly say that, with the benefit of hindsight, but
the later scenes where Zodd actually talks about/to Guts are much more relevant for that purpose than this one. The act of just silently throwing a sword comes across, more than anything else, as far too mysterious and whimsical at first glance. There's no real attempt to explain why Zodd would even care about Guts, someone who for all he knows is destined to die when a certain "inescapable" sacrifice happens, until quite some time afterwards.

In any case, I know this is not going to change anyone's mind and I'm not that interested in the movies myself, so this argument is mostly academic.

What? 4:3 is the original aspect ratio. It should be shown in the original aspect ratio only -- period. Anything else is incorrect.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
May SHAFT never stop milking the -monogatari books.

You do make a valid point with your arguments, but I still don't think that the film benefits in any way with that removal, and it loses an incredible scene which would improve the overall atmosphere a lot.
I really do believe that the reason for the removal of the scene is, as you've already presumed, an attempt to remove all of the fantasy elements from this part of the story to make
The Eclipse
more shocking or something.
They did show
Puck
at the end though, so that assumption might be incorrect.

The question then is what purpose the movies serve. If they were a sort of reinterpretation of the manga, with a very specific purpose of their own with something different to say about the same characters with a different tone, then sure, that is a valid point. But as it is, it appears that the movies are mostly a straight adaptation of the manga, with less content. As such, it should attempt to retain as much of the original tone as possible since it clearly isn't really bringing anything new to the table. If it fails in that as well, then it is at best a poor adaptation, and at worse, a complete waste of time and effort.

Tari Tari sort of makes sense to me. It's very middle of the road, generically pleasing to almost all audiences (mixed gender cast with an even focus, comedy and drama in equal measure, songs etc. etc.) and exactly the kind of thing I think Japanese audiences would like. It also sold very well indeed.

It's possible the vote was fixed but then who knows?

Everything else on the top ten makes sense that they should be there, though, and I'm very pleased to see Apollon at number 10 which I never though would happen. I'm kind of surprised Psycho Pass has ranked so highly, though - in fact, higher than SAO!

Tari Tari at #1 is pretty lol, but the greater crime is Kill Me Babby beating out Yuru Yuri S2 and Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb, that's just sick.

I do wonder how many fans in Japan for each particular show exist that never actually buy the discs compared to those that do.

You can see all votes in the thread itself. Tari Tari winning was extremely controversial and pretty visible as a rigged vote. There were certainly real people voting for it too, but after a certain point when it looked like GuP was going to be a clear winner, every vote or every other vote started to have Tari Tari at #1 with random stuff for the other four slots. A clear sign of vote rigging. :p

Tari Tari rigged!

You can look at TV ratings to sort of extrapolate some numbers but basically the ones that actually buy the shows are a very small fraction of the anime watching public. That's part of the reason why anime disks are so expensive.

Ah, okay, I didn't read the original thread obviously. That sounds pretty much like a fixed vote then :p

It's the same thread. You just have to click on "display all" in the link. Then run a search for "tari" in Chrome, and look at the distribution of the highlighted results on the scroll bar. :D

And part of the reason why only a very small fraction of the anime watching public buys anime is because the discs are so expensive! Gotta love the cycle.

Well, at least GuP is at number 2.
