PAL Charts - Week 52 - Wii for art thoU?

Ubisoft end the year on a high as ‘Far Cry 3’ (-5%) claims No1 following continued price promotion, pushing Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ (-48%) down to No3.

It’s the publisher’s first No1 in the last week of the year since the original Assassin’s Creed topped the chart back in W52 2007. Ubisoft also lay claim to the most Top 10 charting titles this week with 3 thanks to ‘Just Dance 4’ (-53%) and ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ (-34%) both only slipping one place, to No6 and No8 respectively. ‘FIFA 13’ (+1%) climbs 2 places to No2 with its highest ever weekly sales outside of the first 3 weeks. ‘Hitman Absolution’ (-40%) falls one place to No4 ahead of ‘Need for Speed: Most Wanted’ (-13%) which is up one place to No5. ‘Halo 4’ (-24%) finishes at No7, but Microsoft have another Top 10 title this week thanks to retailer promotion on ‘Forza Horizon’ (+30%) which helps it race from No21 to No10.

Halo 4 continues to show great legs. I'm not sure how this compares to other games in the series but halo 4 seems to just keep on chugging.

Also damn at 360 software sales. Top 5 are all 360 and the chart is littered with 360 software.

May I object to OP's title?

Atm we have only UK charts, whereas the title suggests that the sentence hinting at Wii U's underwhelming sales is referring to ALL PAL charts, that's just speculation.

Who'd have thought that a console with no *pbvious* improvement over two much cheaper devices with much larger and critically better game catalogues would fail to catch fire straight away......it's still far to early to judge anything as a failure, barring the following statement:

"The Wii U launch in the UK was an abysmal failure"

SmokeyDave seems to be enjoying this failing far too much, oh wait, it's just pay back for when everyone was gloating over the vitas performance ;)

Fun fact: I've seen more Wii U ads on German television in the last two days than in November and December combined.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Those Wii U sales...

Heads will roll.

Not UK heads though. Who'd have thought not having a reasonably sized European marketing and PR arm would lead to disaster! Nintendo's penny pinching ways in barely ever re-investing in the only industry it exists in was always distasteful to watch, but now its finally come to bite them in the arse bigtime.

Im suprised Just Dance 4 is doing so good. It's amazing how well this franchise is still selling to whats a casual crowd. Ive had fun with it too one drunk evening.

It's the COD of dance games.

Who knows, we may see some re-entries in the German Top 100!

Jokes aside, the OP has been written based only upon UK and Ireland charts so it's not accurate, besides the title is likely going to be click-baiting for a lot of users coming here just to mock at Wii U's poor sales, hence derailing the whole discussion to "Nintendo is doomed" level though we have not any numbers to know how Wii U's performing in PAL territories on the whole.

@Clay Davis, nothing personal of course on my part, I am not calling you out but I hope you see my point.

The last few weeks of charts gives us a pretty good indication. You'll be waiting a long time for actual numbers though (I guess the next set of Nintendo briefing figures will cover it).

Wii U and Vita aren't doing well at all in the UK. They're like Edward V of England and Richard of Shrewsbury, the princes sent to the Tower of London to die, only to be found under the stairs 2 years later.

9/10 NeoGAFfers don't understand statistics. The other 3/10 don't care.

Ubisoft also price the game very competitively at around £20-£25 at release.

The irony being of course Vita definitely saw a bump this Christmas while the festive season seemingly meant very little to anyone wanting Nintendo's newest box and Mario game under the tree. If you're not selling well in December, you're living in Fuck City.

this is a fair point, but I feel the past few weeks of charts were enough to give an indication of how sales probably were over the entire region. if it is better than expected in most regions, I will pm a mod straight away to change the title.

the title wasn't intended to be a bait title, it was only meant to be some fun word play. baiting would have been something along the lines of PAL Charts - Week 52 - Wii U Bomba or something similarly trashy.

I apologise if anyone feels the title is baiting. it wasn't my intent when I came up with it.

Nintendo had a few big marketing campaigns in the Christmas season - just not for Wii U. It was all 3DS, and there were a lot of 3DS ads and promotions. They're apparently ramping up Wii U marketing now. It's almost as if they planned it this way for some reason.

I'm actually a little concerned about the performance of next-gen consoles if the Wii U and Vita are any indication. I'm expecting it to be a very slow burn initially.

Actually December charts can tell us little until we have semi-official hardware numbers, since in the holiday season we've had a lot of new entries of huge IPs such as Black ops, Assassin's creed, Hitman, Halo, Fifa, Far cry etc. on consoles that by now have a solid userbase, so it's not a surprise that Mario is not charting, in fact it didn't chart in November NPD top 20 either, yet Wii U has had pretty decent launch sales there.

In a few words, atm we have not enough elements to back up any statement suggesting that Wii U is bombing or not, aside from the little we know as a fact(UK and France) we can only speculate.

I'm still searching for the source, but they said, that the 3DS marketing has a higher priority over christmas.

Wii is holding quite alright actually and even worse Sonic racing is either pulling shitty numbers or the WiiU version is doing awesome.

that's perfectly normal, their DS business was humonguous compared to their Wii business (Europe was DS biggest territory after all).
1rst thing 1rst was to salvage the 3DS at all cost, WiiU be damned.

It's the COD of dance games.

It's a fad game like Zumba fitness, and the Guitar Heroes (or DDRs if you want to go back even further) of the world. The only difference between Just Dance and DDR/Guitar Hero is that Just Dance doesn't require bulky peripherals for a game you'll only play when having friends over. That kind of ensures sales won't fall off the face of the earth between entries.

I found it:

GamesBeat: Are there any other things worth noting that we haven’t touched on?

Moffitt: Broadly, as we look forward to the holiday, we expect that we’ll have some shortages of Wii U. Nintendo’s number one priority this holiday is 3DS and 3DS XL. We’re seeing an ever-growing momentum in our handheld business. Nineteen months in, we’re still a million units ahead of the pace of DS at this point in its life. As you know, DS was the best-selling gaming system of all time, and so we’re pleased with that. We’re seeing great momentum from the 3DS XL launch in August.

Nintendoland bundle sales give us an indication of hardware sales. It's a fairly useful indication given that we have actual figures for some of the software sales in the chart.

I'm actually a little concerned about the performance of next-gen consoles if the Wii U and Vita are any indication. I'm expecting it to be a very slow burn initially.

There is no reason to worry at all. The wii U and vita didn't fail because of the lack of interest in next gen. They failed because they both launched at too high of a price and with a shitty software line-up and little promise of the same improving. They were also both launched when their predecessor was already dead in the water and their brand name was in the dumps in essence.

I don't think the 720 and PS4 are guaranteed to be huge successes for obvious reasons but unlike a lot of people i think they are going to come out of the gate very strongly.

Didn't know that, smart. First one was full price I think right?

I also think dancing together has more party value/more widely accepted then pretending to play songs which is pretty complex still for most.

But you're right about the bulky and expensive plastic though for Guiter Hero etc.

Since Vita NFS charted, the bottom of the charts are around 5k, shouldn't be that hard for Mario to chart.
(Vita NFS is 11% of total NFS, which is > Halo 4s 40k.)

The outlook is pretty damn bad.

What numbers are those games down at the bottom doing? The likes of F1 Race Stars and 007 have got to be pulling low four-figures max, right?

I apologise if anyone feels the title is baiting. it wasn't my intent when I came up with it.

I don't think your intention was to troll anyone or adding fuel to the flames, yet I am afraid that title will not help to set a fair discussion; by the way I the same applies to all hardware launches in general, indeed it's only after a few months that we can have a clear idea of what are the actual sales trends.

Wii is holding quite alright actually and even worse Sonic racing is either pulling shitty numbers or the WiiU version is doing awesome.

According to certain hearsay sources, the Wii U version actually sold best in the US in November. All three versions bombed, though.
