Almost exactly 6 years to the day, the successor to Nintendo Wii arrives, heralding the next console generation.

Nintendo’s Wii U launched on Friday 30th November 2012 (Wii on Friday 8th December, 2006) and Wii U arrives with 24 launch titles spread over 11 publishers, more than any other home console ever launched in the UK (there were 14 launch titles for Wii spread over 8 publishers). Just like with Wii there are 2 first party launch titles ‘Nintendo Land’ & ‘New Super Mario Bros. U’(Wii had ‘Zelda: Twilight Princess’ & ‘Wii Play’) and just like before, these 1st party titles are the top-selling games, with ‘Nintendo Land’ bundled within an official launch pack (see below).

Also just like before, Ubisoft have the greatest number of launch titles with 6 for Wii U compared to 4 for Wii. And Ubisoft can again claim to have the best-performing 3rd party launch title, thanks this time to ‘Zombi U’ (‘Red Steel’ back on Wii), but of course ‘Zombi U’ was sold solus and also as a flagship title within the Premium 32GB Zombi U Pack. Indeed, the Zombi U Pack accounted for 30% of Wii U hardware for week 1. This, coupled to the 60% share of the Premium 32GB Nintendo Land Pack means that only 10% of week 1 Wii U customers opted for the Wii U 8GB Basic Pack.

Looking at the Entertainment Software All Formats Top 40, Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ takes a 3rd straight week at No1 (-35%) with a Wii U version debuting this week. Ubisoft claim the biggest new entry at No2 with ‘Far Cry 3’ for 360/PS3/PC and this title becomes the 9th biggest launch of 2012, just behind last week’s ‘Hitman Absolution’. EA’s ‘FIFA 13’ remains at No3 for a 4th week in a row (+19%) and also welcomes a Wii U version into the family. This means that ‘FIFA 13’ is now available on 9 different formats, which has not happened since 1993/1994’s ‘FIFA International Soccer’, which also made it to 9 formats.

Square Enix’s ‘Hitman Absolution’ drops from a debut last week at No2 to No4 this week (-51%) and Ubsioft drop 1 place to No5 with ‘Assassin’s Creed III’ (53,923), which this week gains 2 Wii U SKU’s (Standard edition and Join or Die edition). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 4’ moves up 1 place to No6 (+48%) and also gets a Wii U edition. Warner’s ‘Lego The Lord of the Rings’ is at No7 (+6%) and Microsoft’s ‘Halo 4’ drops 3 places to No8 (-12%). Activision’s ‘Skylanders Giants’ is at No9 (+4%) also with a Wii U version and EA’s ‘Need For Speed Most Wanted’ takes No10 (+28%). The Top 3 Wii U titles all debut in the Top 40 with Nintendo’s ‘Nintendo Land’ at No11, ‘New Super Mario Bros. U’ at No 14 and Ubisoft’s ‘Zombi U’ at No17. In summary, there were 5 Wii U SKU’s of titles within the Top 10 and 10 Wii U versions of titles within the Top 40.

That's what truly shocked me.

I didn't expect that so many new Wii U users would buy the Zombi U Pack.

What other games would they get?

I'm surprised it didn't do higher and imo they should have advertised the zombi U the most here - not what I saw...

That doesn't sound very good for WiiU but without any concrete numbers it's difficult to come to any conclusion. Plus word of mouth will be the biggest factor in Wii U potential success. We'll see in a couple of weeks.

funny seeing the adverts in the uk for WiiU the first thing it says is what is a WiiU because nintendo clearly fucked themselves calling it the WiiU to the casuals alot of people think its just some expansion. and the advert makes it even more funny

Ubisoft claim the biggest new entry at No2 with ‘Far Cry 3’ for 360/PS3/PC and this title becomes the 9th biggest launch of 2012, just behind last week’s ‘Hitman Absolution’.
Well, that's got to be depressing for Ubisoft.

Didn't Hitman Absolution do 3x what the last Hitman did in UK?

Yeah, but it isn't exactly a huge series, and Far Cry 3 is Ubisoft's flagship push into the first person shooter genre with their highest user scores ever.

Given Ubisoft's development methods, it also likely cost a fortune to develop.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Do we have estimates for Hitman's debut, now that I think about it?

Might be a tad disappointing for Far Cry 3, but I think the game will get constant bumps due to good word of mouth. As of last week I didn't care at all about Far Cry 3, but now with all the positive word of mouth I'm close to picking this up on Steam tonight.

Book of Spells still holding well.

How does that even manage to chart while PSASBR is not even on the list?

I been playing that game all last week, and I am dissapointed to see such a great game go unrecognized.

This is the most backwards chart I have ever seen, and it won't surprise me when the next FIFA remains on the chart for several months.

Wonderbook has more marketing as Sony treats it as their big holiday game. Also brawl games just seem to be a very niche genre. Wonderbook has automatically wider appeal due to Potter.

That's what I notice on the charts the fact that BoS stayed at 22 in the mist of the Wii U launch I'm wondering if it sold more this week than last week.

also Forza Horizon is up higher this week.

Not even 1 WiiU-Game in the NL-charts?
Did it launch later there?

NL charts are different: they're released on Friday and they consider the period between the precedent Friday and the following Thursday, so launches aren't counted in the same way of other charts.

Yep.

Shitty game no one wanted, or asked for, that received no marketing to top it off.

I'm surprised people are surprised.
That no one asks for a game happends a lot though. Besides sequels, i actually cant think of one game that people in general have asked about, then it got made.

I dont know about people in general, but i've seen some talk about that people wanted a fighting game with Sony characters during the last years.Personally, i dont think that the game is shitty. The lack of marketing is probably the biggest problem i think.

TV ads every other ad break is a lack of marketing?

Absolutely massive advertising campaign in the UK. Literally every ad break has a Book of Spells ad.

TV ads every other ad break is a lack of marketing?

Personally haven't seen a single PSASBR advert. And i watch a fair whack of TV

Nice for Book of Spells. I think if they continue the big advertising push and continue to bundle it in a £180 system Sony will do well with it.

I was thinking about getting it, it's only £20!

Well, that's got to be depressing for Ubisoft.

Hitman had a big UK marketing push and opened very well.
I think thats a good sign for Ubisoft. They'll be wanting those 10/10's to pay off across the month.

I do think though it only really developed any hype...or any real interest until those scores came in.

In the UK market its all becoming about holding your chart position. We'll see how it does.

Wii U failing to set the world on fire; really hope there're some big announcements pending from Nintendo in the near future to avoid another Vita situation. I'd hate to see 2013's sales turn into a limbo competition between the platforms.

Full week of sales did not help All Stars at all.

Notice i said HOLDING well. It's been around the same place for 3 weeks, and isn't the sort of game that will do gangbusters all at once. It'll sell steadily for weeks/months.

Plus BoS is holding well in Irish Market too.. where as other two launches of PS3, PSABR and LBPK way down on the list..

It will probably be January's game of the month on PS+

I think a PS+ discount, maybe 25% off. Giving it away for free just three months after its release will devalue Sony's other first party offerings as people will just wait for PS+ game collection releases rather than buying them for £40.

Wonderbook doing OK, but considering the ad blitz, it's not anything to write home about. It will most likely bomb in the US, though. I'll get Battle Royale when it drops to 20€, seems like it's a fun party game.
