LTTP: Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete

After completing my previous LTTP of Lunar Silver Star Story Complete I've decided to move on to the next game in the series.

This, like the original Lunar, was never really on my radar when it came out. I think the dated look to the game put me off (even back then) and so I put it off for better looking titles like FF7, FF8, Legend of Dragoon, etc.

Of course, this was my mistake - I know now that the Lunar series is fantastic after playing the first one to completion and so, like the first, I will be playing the shit out of Lunar 2 with some marathon sessions.

Also, like my previous LTTP I will be streaming the entire game as I play through it, so feel free to stop in.

I've seen it often debated that Lunar 2 is the best game in the series, but many fans argue that Lunar 1 is better. How do you guys feel in regards to these games? Is one better than the other, or are they equal in their own ways?

In retrospect, I think I prefer the second game to the first game. But I'll be damned if they're not both fantastic and worth playing. 2 desperately needs some kind of rerelease, PSN or otherwise.

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete is the best game in the series and beats SSSC handily.

Lunar: The Silver Star on the Sega CD is almost as good as Eternal Blue.

2 is absolutely incredible. Easily in my top five favorite RPGs.

EDIT: Going from Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete to Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete can best be likened to going from Suikoden to Suikoden II. While the first is good it doesn't even hold a candle to the second.

Go back and play the Sega CD version of Lunar: The Silver Star first.

Love the game, a must have classic.

If the game get remaked(3DS I hope) they can use DQVII engine.

Perfect for that game.

I freaking loved Lunar: The Silver Star back in the day, but I find it nearly unplayable now. The random encounter rate is just ridiculous in that game. It's a shame, because the music is so much better than SSSC's.

The random encounter rate is 'ridiculous'? I actually found it to take too long to engage a battle while trying to level in some instances.

I mean 'unplayable?' Is this crazy town or something? Have you ever played any other classic RPGs? Lunar: The Silver Star is actually damn balanced as far as random encounters go.

What are the differences between Silver Star and SSC? I never played the Sega CD versions. Loved the PS1 games.

Well, the battle system is the same. Alex and crew learn almost completely different special skills. Oh and there are random battles and these also occur on the world map.

The soundtrack is almost entirely different. The Sega CD version is vastly superior in this regard.

The story is actually quite different, and your party composition is noteably different in specific sections of the game.

Almost the entire last half of the game is different.

I'm in the minority that Lunar 2 > Lunar 1.

What? Lunar 2 is so much better than the original and both are some of the best RPGs ever made. I would easily place Lunar 2 in my top 10, if not my top 5. A true masterpiece, aurally, graphically (more so in the PS version), and story-wise.

For me Eternal Blue is better than Silver Star because partly of the main protagonist. Alex was the silent archtype and kinda felt flat as a character, while Hiro was more easily likeable. The banter between Hiro and Ruby was far more entertaining than Alex and Nall. Jessica and Kyle was more memorable. Not until Alex becomes you know what do I actually see his character progressing.
I still enjoyed SSSC, but EBC is just so much better!

I agree with you. Alex was kind of a hero placeholder because of his silence. He was fairly devoid of character, which didn't work particularly well because the story was based around him.

Hiro was given much more dialogue and had his own personality. What made the story stand out for me is the fact that the story isn't focused around Hiro - he's not some emo amnesiac, nor is he someone with a dark past that's slowly unraveled. What you see is what you get - the story is focused around Lucia, and the relationship that develops between she and Hiro.

I don't want to say too much since you're playing it for the first time, but Lunar 2 is one of the first games I can remember making me seriously break down in tears. :(

What's also cool about Lunar 2 is the fact that it's its own story. It's not based around the events of The Silver Star - there are plenty of references but the basic outline has little to do with Alex and co's exploits.

Fantastic game, heartbreaking sequel. This game made me feel similarly to Final Fantasy X-2, in that wandering around the same places as the first game made me feel really nostalgic, but in Eternal Blue's case it felt really sad, not upbeat like X-2. Not that that is a bad thing, mind you, it just made it an emotional game for me in a different way. Most of the world is completely transformed though, but the scene where
you're talking to Nall and he starts reminiscing about the SSSC cast really got to me
. It was just hard for me to accept the passage of time for some reason.

The final boss for me was really, really difficult. I don't know what my problem was, but it took me several tries spread out over multiple days. I'd come home from school, take a stab at it, sink 45 minutes to an hour into the battle before dying, then give up in disgust for the day. The next day in my high school history class I'd ignore the lecture and strategize how I'd tackle the boss after school. I had an elaborate doodle in my notebook that depicted the final battle and all of my planned attacks/defenses. Wonder if I still have all of those notes somewhere, it's be fun to find them. Idk what the deal was but that was probably the hardest time I've ever had on a final boss before.

I'm a bit more partial to Silver Star but that's probably only because it's been re-released so many times that I've played the first game many more times than Eternal Blue. Really, really hope that Ireland manages to get this one up on the PSN. I've been buying all of his PS1 Classics releases to try and support this. ;-)

Yeah the original SEGA CD version was INSANELY HARD. Borgen, anyone? The last boss was a real killer too and you needed to do some major grinding to have any chance.

No joke. The ending tears at you. Damn shame Hiro's US SCD dub VA didn't come back for the remake.

Also, sadly, Complete is also much easier than EB SCD, but it wasn't as drastic a change from Lunar TSS SCD, at least.

And Lemina still the ish.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I played it pretty recently (well, 2 years ago... but that's "pretty recently" in my terms) :p I really liked the game though some of the dungeons in the second half
and the epilogue
tended to drag on just a BIT too long... The orphanage part was really cool too.

So apart from the controversial WD addition of needing MP to save in the SEGA CD version, what are the differences between the SEGA CD and PS1 versions?

I thought that in the Sega CD version the enemies (or at least bosses) scale their levels with your party.

I could be wrong on that though.

I remember I was 11 when I played this. I asked my mom what "wench" meant after reading it after
Ghaleon kidnaps Lucia or whatever
. She wasn't too happy.

Are there any plans to release this on PSN? ~$100 is a little steep for me to spend on a PSX game. Though I really want to replay it.

I'm enjoying it so far, but I have to say that I prefer Luna to Lucia so far. That goes for the voice actor too. Lucia just sounds way too... delicate. Like, forcefully so.

I like the changes they made - faster paced combat, better item/equipment management, and slightly better graphics.

I don't like that you move slower in dungeons and can only move at the "normal" speed when mashing square every few seconds, though. I get that they want you to use it to dodge monsters, but I just feel way too slow.

Oh, and Leo is a jerk.

Looking forward to seeing how the story pans out in this one, though.

I have a save data back from the 90s where I totally screwed myself over because I didn't know he was coming up as a boss. Low mp and like no items. I have yet to go back to the sega cd version due to borgen haunting me.

Man seeing these LTTP threads for the Lunar games makes it really tempting to go on a E-Bay/Amazon hunt to find these games.

You will love him - A LOT - during one segment of the game.

If this is the scene I think your talking about then OP is in for a good laughter.

BTW Vic, Lunar Eternal Blue is what made me get into drama classes in Redding CA when I was in HS.

I had grandiose dreams of one day doing work for you guys :p

It wasn't outside the realm of possibility. I hired a LOT of actors from Riverfront Playhouse. We also got a number of good actors from Redding open auditions (Ashley Angel/Alex and others), but they were extremely grueling days. The 98% without talent really grind you when you see close to a hundred in a day, so I only did a few of them in 15 years.

What HS did you go to?

Shasta High, I was only there a short while but I didn't finish a whole year there.

It was always something though that Working Designs was in Redding.

The Lunar 2 strategy guide is sooooo good. Arc the Lad guide is better since you can beat people half to death with it. The game is great as well, I love the cast and the music.

I love the original Sega CD version of Eternal Blue. It's probably my favorite JRPG of all time.

I do not care for EBC, sadly. Unlike SSSC, EBC's changes are both minimal and a detriment to the overall experience. I'll probably never finish it :/

I'll always cherish my (unopened) Ghaleon punching puppet though!

It's part of her story arc. Watching it progress subtly over the course of the game is nice.

I completely forgot about Leo until I read this and now I realize I really need to play this game again ASAP

This was one of the first RPGs where I noticed genuine character progression. It was great stuff.

Lunar 2 is in my top 5 of RPGs. Yet... I haven't even beaten it yet! I've gotten to the last boss about 10 times, and every time after going really hard I die. (and I refuse to grind, I'd rather replay the game... which I'll do when it's on PSN)

We'll get it up eventually, no limb sacrifice required. It just is taking a long time to get the parties together.
If the PS1 Lunars are almost a sure thing in the long run then...by gum, let me just keep throwing money at all of your PSN releases to make it happen!

I still prefer the cast of characters in the first game, so Silver Star Story will always be my favorite, but Eternal Blue is pretty damn good too.

I played Lunar 2: eternal blue complete before Silver Star Story Complete because it was the last copy at TRU two weeks after scamming my first PSX. To this day, I prefer the gameplay, characters and Love story of Lunar 2.

Of course, years before I had watched a friend essentially go through the entirety of Lunar: SSS on Sega CD, so I knew what I was getting into and the backstory.

We'll get it up eventually, no limb sacrifice required. It just is taking a long time to get the parties together.

All of my monthly playstation money, consider it yours if you get this up. Premium price even like Tomba! and Vanguard Bandits, price is not a problem. Is there a chance at a digital Strategy guide? I've got a hard copy of Arc 1&2 and the digital of Vanguard Bandits.
