Telltale wants to work on deeper franchises like Star Wars and Half-Life

Telltale Games had one hell of a 2012. It released its successful adaptation of The Walking Dead (which GamesBeat named its Game of the Year).

How does the developer plan to follow that up? Well, it sounds like it wants to work on some of the biggest video game and movie franchises in existence.

“Coming from LucasArts, we always felt we could do a great Star Wars story game,” Telltale chief executive officer Dan Connors told Red Bull U.K. in an interview. “We also love the idea of building out a deeper story to a great game franchise — something like Half Life Stories or Halo Stories.”

Of course, the developer has nothing in the works that involves Halo, Half-Life, or Star Wars, but Connors and the rest of the team at Telltale believe they are ready for something of that scale.

“[Dan Connors was] speaking more to our goal of wanting to take on a major gaming franchise someday,” Telltale’s senior vice president of publishing Steve Allison told GamesBeat. “[We want] to build a narrative game series that supports another franchise — as we passionately believe [our game] would not compete with or cannibalize [Halo 4 or the next Half-Life.]“

Allison believes that a Telltale adventure game based on a major gaming or movie franchise would only boost player investment in the series. Especially since the developer’s games are so different from what most of these properties are best known for.

“Will we do this? Yes, we believe we will some time very soon,” said Allison. “But the franchises mentioned are totally speculative and used only as an example to frame the idea.”

Actually, I wish Telltale would make Star Trek TNG episodes with the original cast doing the voice acting. That would fulfill all of my wishes.

Well no offence to them but they kind of need a better graphics engine to pull this stuff off at a respectable level. Walking Dead, BttF and Sam & Max have only really worked so far due to the simplistic cartoony style. It would be a disservice to the mentioned franchises if they were also like this.

Make it old ass Star Trek and I could get behind that.

screw game video game franchises and their mediocre characters and stories. Adapt something like The Wire, Sopranos, or breaking bad and get writers from the show proper on the team.

probably really unrealistic, but honestly I wouldn't really be stoked if telltale announced they were gonna make a game out of an existing franchise. Walking dead was great.

Please fix your tech first, dudes

THIS THIS THIS

Walking Dead runs pretty bad (but is playable on 360), but the number of people I know across all platforms who have crazy tech or save issues with the game is astounding, and this isn't a new thing for Telltale games either. They have some amazing people there, but their tech is very clearly not up to par, hopefully their success with TWD can get them to hire some new or better people.

I would 100% support Telltale-made Half-Life side stories. You know Valve is never goddamn going to expand on Adrian Shephard's story (lol, Valve releasing another Half-Life game), and if Telltale did something with that? I'd be down. Or hell, give us some story of a family trying to survive in some backwater place that gets fucked after the Seven Hour War or something.

Mite b cool.

I'm on the same boat. I love their games, but holy fuck do they need some tuning...

Good luck with getting Star Wars, now that Disney has it, I'm sure getting those license rights will be hard or not cheap.

I'd love to see Telltale to try and experiment a bit more, I felt Sam & Max season 3 was the best season purely because it experimented more that the rest of the series, which in all honesty are fairly standard adventure games with great writing.

I wouldn't want them to be constantly trying to replicate what The Walking Dead is with every new game they put out, so getting some unusual licenses may be a good thing. Although I wouldn't mind seeing what they could make with an original IP.

If they were to do this, I'd want it to be a collaboration- Telltale's writers/designers, Valve/343/whoever's tech guys/engines/etc. I wouldn't want a Half-Life game as low-tech as TWD.

Halo could work, telling by Halo 4 343industries seems to love to outsource stuff, so why not.

Just knock on their door, Telltale.

I'd love like a Battlestar Gallactica type of series. That TV show was a great example of emotional dramatic storytelling in a very sci-fi space.

Ok I am not buying any telltaile games until they fix TWD's save bug on PC.

If they dont fix the walking dead the only thing I will ever buy with there name on it will be the above idea.

Fix your shit or buy the Star Trek Licence. Its your call TT.

Halo kind of is now, with all of the books and whatnot. Half Life isn't even close.

Deepness is not measured in books and merchandise.

You are right with the Half Life part.

I think they're saying they want to create deep stories in existing popular franchises - not that those franchises already have deep stories, necessarily.

They are using Halo and Half Life stories as a reference for deep games.

I kinda wish they would do their own premise and story as opposed to using a popular franchise. While playing WD I was thinking they could do an awesome serious sci-fi thriller.

I want a Telltale Firefly game. Hear me? I want multiple character control similar to Jurassic Park but gameplay more like Walking Dead and Back to the Future.

I dunno, reading the article all they say is "major gaming franchise" and "building out a deeper story to a great game franchise." They never say that those are already "deep games."

To me, that actually sounds like they're saying "these are great, popular games - we want to work on them to create deep stories within that universe."

Given their footprint on Steam, they could have a chance to arrange a deal with valve (even if they are notoriously protective with the Half-life franchise, as they already refused many proposals for movie adaptations), but I don't think they have any remote possibility to go anywhere near Halo.
