Rumored Chinese Forum Xbox720 specs: 8CoreCPU,8GB,HD8800GPU,W8,640GBHDD

8GB memory? wow same memory as my PC :( amazing if MS can price this like the Wii U

I wonder if Nintendo will hold the price of the WiiU to force next gen consoles to (announce and) launch at a higher price point to differentiate value proposition only to have Nintendo to immediately drop the WiiU price to pick up that initial crowd of people who become unreceptive to the high price point of the new hardware.

I don't think you know what standby memory is.

Right now my Windows 8 bedroom HTPC, which is just running neogaf and netflix, is using 2160 MB of active RAM and 3626 MB standby. Granted I've got several builds of MSVC in WinSxS loaded from different drivers, and MS can standardize on 1 or 2 sets to reduce memory usage, but even then I'd still be using at least 2 GB with active+standby combined.

Windows 8 never truly shuts down by default. Hybrid shutdown keeps the kernel and several parts of user mode in memory. By keeping that in standby cache, previously opened apps will open directly from RAM...ie instantly. For consoles that's a good idea, because I hate how OS menus laggily load in game.

This isn't 1996 guys. RAM is cheap as hell and can be used not just for active memory, but caching.

SSD--->RAM--->CPU cache
Instant loading

Not
5400 RPM HDD------>CPU

Good, glad someone more knowledgeable than I could back me up.

I didn't think 2GB for the OS was too outrageous.

So, what is this?

720p @30/60, 1080p @30/60 at launch?

Both.

If you want something like Cryengine 3 at absolute max settings outside of resolution, probably 720p.

Depends heavily on what AMD 8880 HD means.

It could go either way. Depends on MS's priorities. I get the vibe that general streaming/media box is high priority, so user experience may warrant dedicating 2 GB for just that.

i'm pretty sure ms and sony would LOVE for the wii u to be priced at the same level. lol at needing price to differentiate value between them

damn it, subliminal marketing got me

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Seems beastly which I'm down for, but I get this fear that it's going to be MAD expensive at launch.

PS: Hate on me and I know it depends on how much devs push, but if we do get these crazy specs I don't see how games won't be mostly 1080p. 30fps will still reign over most games though IMO.

For games? It would depend on the graphics engine used in each game. Call of Duty games usually get 60 Fps because their engine is old, and all the character models/buildings are like paper. Games like Crysis 3 will usually be run in 720p due to it having a far more advanced graphics engine.

Personally I wish to see more 60 fps locked games. Maybe sprinkle in some more ambitious titles targeting 1080p @30 for some eye candy :p
Most big budget AAA consoles games traditionally target eye candy over hitting 60 FPS, aside from something like a Call of Duty.

That's just the reality. I'd be surprised if we saw that change any time soon.

EDIT:
(To be clear, I'm a fan of gorgeous looking games at 30 FPS. It doesn't not bother me as much as it does some)

You are on GAF. You already know too much but you are a minority. The public The tens of millions of people on each platforms user-base who never read GAF or sites like GAF know far less than you and are sensitive to such price differences more than they are specs.

I think we'll probably see more 60fps games next gen than this gen, but not by a huge amount.

I'd just like to see more devs target 100ms response time 30fps. It feels way better than typical 30fps games and allows for plenty of eye candy. Keep the input lag low, framerate steady, and no tearing and I'll be happy.

Console launches for Playstation and Xbox aren't about initial mass appeal. That's year 2+.

Playstation 3 struggled because the price took too long to fall because of really bad decisions by Sony (BDROM, Cell, RAMBUS) not because it was beastly. It also didn't have the content that PS2 had.

Nah. Blu ray is no longer that expensive, and since there won't be as many custom parts in this thing it should be reasonable...relatively speaking.

Actually, the people I know that casually game are surprisingly well aware of the very short leap the Wii U made. Most of the people I know are waiting for Sony or Microsoft to put out a console, or are thinking about building a PC.

At least for me, I've noticed people becoming more informed about what's going in gaming than ever before. There's a hunger out there since this cycle has gone on for so long now.

This is certainly not the same demographic that only knows what a Nintendo is. These are still hardcore platforms. It's not going to dip much into that pool unless they get very aggressive with their lower-tier SKUs.

EDIT:
As much a we hate the thing, Microsoft is already on the right track with the Kinect.

No more shit hair! So hyped that female characters will have decent hair, and bald space marines will have the most amazing looking bald heads ever!

Yup which is exactly why they should hit the US first.

This logic works both ways, otherwise it's supremely flawed. Downplaying the place of 360 in the U.S while overestimating Sony's foothold Europe.

They both have to target U.S and Europe. Japan is the market that can come after.

It's amazing how far we've come with consoles and PCs packing this much power. Specs like this would have been ludicrous in the mid nineties.

After playing Black Ops 2 on a PS3 and seeing how incredible that looks, I can't wait to see what they can do with this new hardware. It's going to be so damn crazy. E3 is going to be so awesome.

Time for Activision to update that damn engine. Durango could run that game in 120fps. lol

*chokes* wat? Have you not had a PS3/360 all this generation?

I have, but still the game is impressive for what it's doing with old hardware, especially with the models in the game and some of the levels. If they can do that on old hardware from 2005-2006 imagine what they will be able to do with these new systems.

I find it disappointing. Call of Duty 2 on Xbox 360 launched in 720p.

now go buy killzone 2 and record yourself playing it, then upload it, I want to relive that moment again

Purchase Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Infamous 2, and God of War 3. Get back to us in a few weeks.

I'd prefer to see:

1. 16Gb memory in this HD age & future-proofing

2. SSD over large HDD for performance

3. Potential dual network ports using an aggregate system

4. Multiple screen support so coop on the same console could be done without splitscreen. So many players own multiple screen these days why not suppot two or more monitors to handle two players each with their own controller and screen? Or be able to up the game resolution and split a single player game across 2/3/4 monitors?

5. Streaming built in e.g. YouTube rendering from any game, voice/screen streaming for live game streaming to Twitch or a new XBL service etc.

That's just some ideas but so far the rumours are looking really tame in terms of deliverable features. I hope they get creative.

Uncharted 3 was also incredible. Alot of times I couldn't even tell when the game was switching from cutscene to gameplay. Killzone 3 was also very nice. Infamous was a fun game, but it didn't do it for me graphically compared to the others. With all these game mentions though you are making me remember how much I've enjoyed my PS3. Can't wait for the PS4.

1. not happening
2. maybe? I think the only reason SSDs are so cheap right now is an effort by bigger manufacturers to starve out the little guys, so it's hard to say they'll stay reasonable long-term.
3. This is possible, given the media hub mentality I've been hearing for durango.
4. not happening. Developers would rather make single player look amazing and won't devote the resources to this. That's a lot of pixels to push.
5. A year ago, I would have naysayed this, but I would be surprised if one of the two didn't have this in their system.

Black Ops 2 looks like a 4 year old game with current day character models.

Not on the PC with DX11.

Not really. The expected jump will be nowhere near the previous generational gaps. A very conservative one, but a welcome one, nontheless...
