The latest Minecraft update was pretty sweet. I feel like playing Minecraft more than Halo 4 nowadays as well.

Never understood the appeal of Minecraft. Interesting Halo 4 sold over approx. 7 million and Minecraft sold over approx. 5 million but Halo 4 has slipped to 3rd place.

It's beating Halo because if you're in Minecraft, you're probably spending hours and hours and hours and hours* in Minecraft. It's a game that appeals mainly to the same people who are going to spend their lives making a 1:1 scale replica of an Imperial Star Destroyer.

*and hours.

I mostly got it to 100% it after someone played it on my account and I didn't want a 0/20 staring at me. It's fun, and I'm definitely going to be playing it a lot more right now since my connection isn't good enough for Halo, but it's also of a clear finite interest to me.

It's essentially an 8-bit version of Skyrim.


Roommate/coworker has a Mac Pro. Waiting for Apple to actually update the Mac Pros to native Thunderbolt before he updates it.

At that point I'll probably build another WinPC w/ Intel proc and Thunderbolt at the same time. I'd really like to continue supporting AMD but they've fallen so far behind now.. :(

Yeah I'm waiting for the Pro refresh before I plunk down $10k to make a good rig for animation and postproduction work, along with the array of capture cards and equipment I wanna get.

Not true, Halo 4 outsold Reach and Halo 3 in its first week of comparative sales, it remains on track to outsell Reach easily and maybe Halo 3 over its relative lifetime. I'm not posing a quality or competitive or features statement just stating sales.

Truth bomb dropped. Pie in the sky wondering ahead...In retrospect it would be interesting if SPOPS/SPOPS cut-scenes/FUD were never developed and the resources went directly into what BLOPSII got with rendering, spectator, classic clean Halo small competitive maps and just poured content into the existing Reach engine/netcode. Personally I'd speculate it would have sold about the same but retained players/population for longer and even gained more ground against BLOPSII for example.

Were exhausted at getting Halo games that ARENT Halo. We havent got a Halo game in years.

Remember there was a time people didnt think CoD would surpass Halo. Games can grow and shrink in fan size. Its not set in stone.

I just completed the "Kill-o-Tron" weekly challenge where you have to earn 12 multikill medals in a single match. But I'm not quite sure how I did it.

In the match, I got 1 overkill, 1 triple kill, and 4 double kills. But...that's only 6 medals. Maybe the number of kills is what unlocks it (???).

The numbers are measured by UU's though, so I don't believe the time spent playing is taken into account on those leader boards.

I thought it counted the >2 multikill medals as their sum (so overkill = overkill + triple + double.) But that's still only 9 medals.


The numbers are measured by UU's though, so I don't believe the time spent playing is taken into account on those leader boards.

Oh, sorry wasn't clear. I just meant that you're likely playing Minecraft and little else for a lot of those users.

Sometimes "X in one match" challenges carry progress forward accidentally. It's a technically sound piece of software.

If you complete Wetworks and Operator without the specialization code you can log in to your account on a friend's Xbox who has the specialization code, pick your next specialization and then level that specialization up on your own Xbox.

Yup. The Live leaderboards that Nelson posts adds a plus 1 to that game if you simply let it load up while connected to live. You could load up a game, get to the main menu, and dashboard out and it would count.

This is also why they list Arcade games by full versions purchased instead of UUs because the fact that every XBLA game can be demo'd would make them consistently in the top rankings, because they can't distinguish between a full and demo version in terms of title IDs.

I'd like to see them actually post the actual UU counts but that's never going to happen.

I think he means players are returning day after day so most likely the UU's are counted day by day and not overall per month as one single UU count. It sucks they don't actually explain how they calculate the UU's or charts exactly.

They're not, one person equals one 'vote' per period. It also doesn't do much to show you how many people played Halo 4 but not CoD, or just played CoD and not Halo 4. If I load up Halo 4 on Tuesday and CoD on Friday, I +1 both of them for that reporting period. The spreads between #1 through #5 are a lot smaller than people think.

If I was a newer player and this just happened to me, and I didn't know any better, I would literally just turn my Xbox off and not think about playing matchmaking again. If 343i's catering to a more casual audience, this is not the experience that should happen.

They've made 20 million more dollars each opening week than the previous Halo. Halo 3 was something like 180 million, Reach did 220 million and 4 did 240 dollars. ODST did 70 million as a side story.

Halo 4 has the benefit of a bigger installed base. In the long run the older halo games will have made more money.

Oh ok, thanks for clarifying and good point about playing multiple game. Nelson just post the actual UU numbers already! I wasn't sure if they did it overall or not.

There is no way halo 4 sells more than halo 3 did,not even Reach has. Halo 3 sold the same 3.4 that h4 did in much less time.

Halo 3 = 180Mil

Reach = 220Mil

Halo 4 = 300Mil

It's probably more to do with the sheer volume of xbox consoles out there, the widespread reach of gaming in general these days and the eggheads have learnt how to build a preorder hype for free marketing of such silly launch statistics syndicated through other media outlets. Overall I think at the end of it's feasible life Halo 4 will be behind Halo 3 but way in front of Reach.

There's no point in preordering games anymore. It's like preordering a DVD. Why? If it's not at Gamestop, it'll be at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, or any other place that has an electronics section. This preordering bonus shit needs to stop.

I dislike the bonus shit too but that's business for you. The developers know the launch window is their largest sales honeymoon period and they'll pile it on from every attack vector they can.

Source on numbers? The amount in $$ doesn't represent sales to consumers, but how much inventory they managed to sell to retailers. All actual sales numbers we've got so far point to weaker sales compared to Reach and 3.
