Reddit Rumor: Fallout 4 Details [Update: Nope]

Fallout 3 remains my favorite "next gen" game. I can't wait to get back into the world. I do love Skyrim, but it doesn't compare to the fun I had in Fallout 3.

And New Vegas was also fun, but still, it wasn't a Fallout 3.

No bald cap? Lies!
both of these please. Also a more action oriented leveling system based on using weapons and various skills (if you use laser pistols more you get better at laser pistols etc. etc.) sounds much better to me.

not real sure if I'm cool with them still using the SPECIAL and traits in lieu of Skyrims skill perks. If I'm using laser pistols I would still want a perk/trait relavent to that.

they also need to shitcan the VATS system as well and make the FPS mechanics infinitely better. They can keep the RPG centric stuff with the gun mechanics(stats and weapon type proficiency effects damage dealt) but I'd like it more similar to Skyrim's perk system (lvl 20 laser pistol proficiency = laser pistol damage is 20% greater so on and so forth.

Yuck. VATS is one of the only good things about the gameplay. Improve the realtime shooting mechanics sure, but VATS is a huge part of what makes combat in the game fun. Make things better don't strip things out. Thats terrible game design, especially when its a major feature in the franchise.

So much Bethesda/Fallout 3 hate in this thread! Personally, I'm really looking forward to whatever they come up with.

Fallout 3 did have some flaws, yes, but if Fallout 4 provides the same level of exploration and immersion that Fallout 3 did, I'll be happy.

no it was better. I like how there were consequences to my decisions and actions that made an actual impact on how the game world reacted to me.

Maybe a system like in Killing Floor where it'll slow down for a few seconds and you can be much more accurate.

or just give me perk's that have differing levels of auto-aim/lock-on.

Sounds plausible to me and I don't hate what I see. It will be no New Vegas, but at least Bethesda is listening to fans somewhat. I will keep my expectations low though.

Bethesda has no plans to reinvent the leveling up system to make it more like Skyrim and want to make Fallout 4 more distinct from Skyrim since of the complaints that Oblivion and Fallout 3 were too similar. Bethesda is thinking about introducing a system, similar to Skyrim, where your skills can level up if you perform certain tasks.

This though sounds awful. I actually prefer Fallouts leveling system to the Elder Scrolls learn by doing system. Less grinding needed.

Definitely one of the bigger flaws with the crafting system in Skyrim.

And a more cyberpunk vibe might actually get me to play this. Not really a huge fan of the thematic in FO3 or New Vegas, so I never bought them.

But Fallout isn't supposed to be a shooter primarily. The VATS exists because it's supposed to be an RPG at its heart.

I don't mind if they improve the shooting mechanics, but shooting should never be the main thrust.

A Fallout without VATS would be poorer for it.

They do need to improve it so you don't just always go for headshots, though.

played Fallout 3 and Skyrim for 100+ hours each. Both had flaws. But I don't play games I hate for 100+ hours like some people here, so Bethesda will have my money day 1.

This is true, but I think that VATS is an incredibly poor way to go about it. I'd rather see more complex, in depth RPG mechanics than that, but I'm not really holding out hope for that. Bethesda has been going in the opposite direction pretty consistently.

The Commonwealth sounds legit, but "Lovecraftian horror"? I dunno, either it's wrongly paraphrased or we'll be getting tentacle-lurks or something.

Not likely. Beth seems to be pretty proud of the Creation engine as it stands. They'll tweak it, sure, but they wouldn't throw it away after one game.
Hopefully for the better,i couldn't play skyrim for more than five mins without seeing a dragon glitch in a hilarious way.

If this is set in Boston, one of the quests HAS to be "Find the head of Ted Williams", obviously it wouldn't be the real one, but it would be somewhat similar.

2 things.

Love your avatar and the other, yeah I agree, sometimes it was too easy if you was close enough.

VATS just bogs down the gameplay to me. An RPG is more about playing/losing myself in a role versus dice rolls based on stats. that method is great for pen and paper games but really contrived and slow for videogames. I realize the IP originated as a turn based rpg but bethesda makes action rpg's and VATS is a direct conflict to that.

YES.

I know people don't like this system a lot, but it makes sense to get better at shooting guns if you well, shoot them, instead of just setting points into it.

Just make limited perks so you don't end up as a overpowered god early in the game. Increase the accuracy of your weapon or pick locks easily with increasing skill, but make the player think about picking special shots/making bullets/repair out of pure scrap (for example) or have unbreakable lockpicks (another example).

About the shooting, I really liked that New Vegas incorporated the ADS system (another hated thing) because I felt like I had far more control when shooting weapons. VATS should be a risk/benefit system rather than "V > Head > Instakill". Lose all "stamina points" after using it, I dunno.

They do need to improve it so you don't just always go for headshots, though.
This. I stopped using VATS in NV to increase the challenge a bit. Shooting in F3 was clunky sometimes, so I resorted to VATS's stuff when it got frustrating.

But the stats are what forces you to play a role. After a while it gets boring playing a god that can do anything.

If its balanced well the point at which you're a god would be much later in the game.

I do play to become a god. its one of the primary reasons I love Skyrim. I like starting the game vunerable but as the game progresses I like to grow and become more powerful and become a force to be reckoned with.

Balance is key tho and their enemy scaling system still needs a lot of work but they could do something similar to what they did with the Deathclaws in FO3 and NV making you avoid areas until you are a certain lvl.

the VATS just makes the gameplay meh and was more a copout to having a better system in place to the poor FPS mechanics.

yeah lets bethesta rewrite everything they are used to use since morrowind just because lol

Just because? How many other AAA developers are using an engine as old as one used on the original X-Box?

It's just that the crafting system is fucking stupid in Skyrim. They need to have a cap on experience for smithing/crafting specific items. You shouldn't be able to spam thousands of a low level item, like iron daggers, to boost that skill and then be able to craft the highest level gear. There should be a tree of progression that makes sense. Otherwise we'll get this...

I don't like how a lot of that sounds. This game should be nothing like Skyrim, one of the most casual RPGs ever. There's no room for anything from that PoS in a Fallout game.

I discussed with someone what the next Fallout game should be in the last two months. We thought it should be focused in Boston, ironically, because NYC is such a common theme for games, and we also wanted it to take place in the winter so the licensed music could go all classic Christmas [this might be expensive] since music is such an important part to the Fallout games.

What if they added a hardcore mode similar to New Vegas?

I don't have much of an interest in that, nor do I think Bethesda has the chops to develop a mode. The thing about NV is it was an amazing RPG outside of hardcore mode, but the mode itself wasn't as good as it could have been. Mods and Sawyer's mod years later was much better than the base game's hardcore mode.

I like VATS personally, but I do think it would still be possible to have good stat based combat and not have VATS. Have your gun skills effect things like reload speed, damage, weapon wear could work and still make a good FPS experience. Just avoid it effecting accuracy. I don't seem to mind it as it makes sense that a guy with terrible skills can't shoot, but a lot seem to call that jank.

I believe they fixed it in a later patch. You skill now levels up based on the price of the item you crafted. So Iron Daggers now give you almost nothing once your skill hits certain point.
