[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

I'm a bit of a laymen with this techno jargon, but next gen consoles using tablet and notebook tech with the capabilities of running BF3 at medium settings at 1080p out of the gate, this all seems rather disappointing imo. What am I missing, is power consumption really that detrimental?

Medium? Runs at high at 50-60 fps and that doesn't account for the things which will make powerful, like coding and optimizing for one platform and far less OS overhead.

The prospects for the machine make me smile but don't fool yourselves, Durango will be better, hardware wise...
Not that it matters that much...

Do you know anyone doing that, and what state of playability are we talking about here? Keep in mind we are talking a $500 PC.

Yes, I know people doing that. Depending on game, they run in either low settings or medium settings. Framerates vary from 20-30fps in newer games(like witcher 2) on low settings.

thanks for the laugh
Shouldn't we be more interested in what games/non game stuff are coming rather than what edram or gigahurtz or googleplexes are in the thing? No, this is Neogaf.
Fat nerds only happy when shit is CAPABLE of running things fast/amazing graphics rather than if there is a possibility it ever will

this shit be real.

now excuse me while i brush the girls off my washboard abs and whirl my 3ft cock around a pool of uncharted 4 rumours.

I imagine 720p30 and 720p60 will still be the target next gen for the most part, with some games 1080p.

Developers will opt for more eye candy I imagine over a resolution bump.

I hate the "buy a PC instead" argument. If you can find me someone who is still playing all the latest PC games on his $500-or-less gaming PC from 2006, then color me very surprised.

I can see two flaws in your argument:

1) Why would you still have a 2006 PC? Upgrades are so cheap, you could upgrade to a GPU that kicks every console's ass for the price of a couple of games. Money you probably already saved by buying cheaper PC games instead of their more expensive console versions. The only reason to still have 2006-era hardware would be... well honestly I can't think of a single reason.

2) Back then consoles had a lot of specialized hardware, so porting was more difficult and it had a performance penalty. These new consoles are x86 AMD CPUs and GPUs, it's reasonable to assume that porting will be much easier and much less expensive in terms of performance.

This.

I can't even. What they did with Uncharted and Killzone this gen on 512mb...

not only that the 4GB of Ram will be about 8.5 times faster than the VRam that was in the PS3 .

so it's not just the devs having more ram to play with they will also have a lot more bandwidth to play with.

I find it funny that in a thread about a new console. a picture mocking another console comes back multiple times every page. What does that say about some people here.

Sounds good to me and my wallet is ready day 1 depending on the games. Imagine the awesomeness that will come out of these studios SMS, GG, ND, Polyphony, SuckerPunch etc on PS4

I hope Sony just puts 512MB ram separately for the OS and leave the 4GB alone to future safe as we know memory is always handy specially later on in the cycle. I'll pay the extra $20 ;)

Also where is that dude who bet that there will be no next gen console from Sony and wanted to get banned? :)

My argument is to say that you invest $500 in a console and you're set for a good seven years with the latest games and graphics that keep improving. You can't do that on PC. I just cannot believe the person above who said he knows people running on a $500 PC from 2006 running the latest games on low to medium settings.

I have nothing against PC gaming, mind you. Just that there is a huge advantage to consoles in one hardware investment and being set with that for seven years.

That a lot of people are unimpressed with the Wii U and see Orbis and Durango as the proper next gen consoles? Just a bit of humour is all. I'll admit, I laughed at the pic.

Erm, you can run BF3 on Ultra on a 7850/70 @1080p and a framerate close to 60fps.
If the m7970 is close to that it should be fine.
Yeah, you can actually achieve those framerates w/o MSAA. Add in a little next generation postAA and this is going to get fun. I can't even begin to imagine what the AAA first party output is going to look like on these machines. I know we'd all like 60fps, but imagine the visuals they will achieve if they target 30fps. :S

I hope this is not true because I'm getting horrible memories of $599 all over again. I've only got one lifetime Sony and that one's already going to be spent working 5 jobs to afford a 4K tv!

i find it funny that you keep on entering threads that aren't in way related to the wiiU to say "stop making fun of the wiiU guys".

Think about it, if the 720 is B/C with the 360, you'd be able to fit an entire game into memory, no loading times ever.

Other than loading a 5GB disc to RAM at 12x DVD throughput (~5min)? Well you still have to have 512MB of RAM set aside for the game itself. But games are often 6+GB, not 4.5GB. Cool idea though.

You gotta admit the picture in question is very funny.

Meh, it's not that funny. It seems to be a trend to quote every flame on Wii U a billion times, in lots of different threads. I don't see what it adds tbh other than childish schadenfreude. But let's carry on discussing ps4.

Not that it matters that much...

Doesn't matter to me. I will buy both. Nextbox for multiplat (if the multiplats run significantly better) and PS4 for exclusives.

Exactly. I love my monster rig, but I won't miss out on those exclusives.

And if they don't run significantly better? After all, there's nothing whatsoever to suggest that will be the case.

I don't think it will happen unless the 'extra hardware' in both is extremely exotic. Like if Kinect or some weird controller options add a lot to the price. Both systems should be quite cost effective to manufacturer. No cell dude.. no cell and no early Blu-ray addition.

I'd say that some people take video games way too seriously if they get offended seeing a photoshopped picture of a console.

It's just a piece of plastic. Stop getting so emotionally invested in it.

Exactly. I love my Wii U and I still find the picture amusing.

It's a piece of plastic that the is bought using hard earned money and signifies an investment in which the return is entertainment promised by platform holder and third parties. What it represents transcends its sum of all parts. I can understand him getting offended.

There are clear huge advantages to having a console (along with disadvantages obviously; I know its not perfect).

This depends entirely on if the person sees the cost of entry as a barrier or not. I don;t really want to be limited to the tech that $500 can buy me over the console generation.

Aren't 7970s still really expensive? I mean and that's just the GPU.

But coolwhip doesn't go into threads where people make fun of the Vita and question it. Nay, he wonders why there are people out there who want the Vita to be saved at all.

Haha, some people never forget eh. That's still different though, I don't mock or bash Vita at every chance I get, never in fact.

I spent my hard earned on my vaccum unit recently. I wouldn't get offended if someone made fun of it online.

Honestly, I would like nothing more than your supposition to be true. Then the only franchise I would be interested in would be Halo and at that point, I guess I'd buying one for media functionality.

Let's also hope that Sony will run the OS on a separate ARM processor thus having all 8 cores available for games. I'd also pay the extra $ for it.

But with PC, there isn't just a cost of entry. There's the cost of upgrades. Sure, consoles from 2006 can't keep up with today's PCs, but I don't feel like my gaming experience has been limited in any way, and I only had to pay the [relatively] low cost of entry.

Will there be BC for the 720? I thought this was under question?

According to these specs, there are huge differences between PS4 and PS3 for instance... literally 10x bump in specs. So....

I dont really care what resolution it is, it will mean that every game can easily look a lot better than Uncharted 3, GoW 3 or KZ2.

It means GT5's photomode can easily run real races on PS4... etc, etc.

I bet it will be more than $400.
