Wii U seems to be in an unrecoverable Vita-like position. Or worse.

While I don't mean to pick on you specifically, I find it hilarious (and hilariously aggravating) how common this sentiment is when at this same point last year, there were hoards of people tripping over themselves trying to defend the vita and telling everybody to just be patient.

Where's that never ending patience now? Has the vita made pessimists of everyone or do people just like writing off nintendo every chance they get? We got the same crap during the first year of the 3DS now it's over 30 million sales world wide after 2 years on the market.

Yes, these current numbers are atrocious but the idea that the system is already dead after a few short months on shelves is nothing short of wishful thinking.

Orbis will get Japanese support. Though if Platinum do well and of WiiU turns around...

But those are seriously big ifs.
Everyone claims Japan is handheld only now yet we see the PS3 and its ganes selling really well.

Be interesting to see the support the 3DS should hopefully have in the future though.

Wii U will do fine in Japan, it will be enough for Nintendo to release a new Animal Crossing, Dragon Quest (not X), Mario Kart and Monster Hunter. In the worst case Wii U might end up in a Saturn-like situation being successful in Japan and failing everywhere else.

It did. PS3 has outsold the Wii for the past years in Japan, hasn't it? I'm talking about console market only.
It's still over 3 million behind, it's not dominating at all. The Wii's been dead in Japan for awhile, yet the PS3 still has no chance of overtaking it. And that was with a ton of 3rd party support even before release.

Wasn't GAF saying the same thing about the 3DS in the first couple of months it was out too? Let's wait a bit while the software starts to come out.
Yep, a lot of people were. Kinda insane considering the titles they had/have in the pipeline, and now the 3DS is over 30 million and the biggest title is still to come.

If the trend of WiiU sales keeps going like this Sony has a chance to dominate Japanese console market with the PS4 if they play the card right. Look like Nintendo already prepared Megaton (Mario Kart U, New 3D Mario, WWHD) to troll PS4 launch just like what they did to the Vita. FFvsXIII as a PS4 launch title will totally be GIGAton to fight back Nintendo.

you are funny. Might as well add TLG on the list.

PS4 will dominate regardless of the outcome.

EDIT: Chris making me look bad again. PS3 did dominate the home console market, only one million-seller, but Sony is the one getting all the third-party support.

Please define "dominate" since PS3 didn't dominate Japan home console scene at all. Getting third party support doesn't mean it's dominating.

Yeah, the Wii U numbers suck (it looks like it'll go below 10k soon, wow) but I'm not worried about it at all. Once the games come out, if its performance still sucks, I will worry then.

Actually, what I am a bit concerned about is that 3rd party developers may not be too keen on developing for it at the moment...

If Wii U produces compelling software and still flounders, yeah, it's fucked for good.

Right now it's fucked without compelling software. The latter part of this sentiment can be rectified, but it remains to be seen what effect it has on the former.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

Yeah that is the concern right now- assuming 3rd parties do have projects in the works, Nintendo has to convince them not to can them because of poor early sales.

Biggest question right now, IMO: where the hell is the Japanese third-party support, aside from MH and DQ?

If that picture improves significantly soon - like, next Nintendo Direct soon - it has a shot at doing reasonably well there. If not, it may not fare much better than GC.

(And out of curiosity, are you still expecting "Parity+" from Japanese third parties? Not seeing any sign of that yet, aside from Revelations.)

The silence so far has been pretty deafening, but I am willing to give them one more Nintendo Direct.

I mean both of the other next-gen consoles are rumored to be unveiled by GDC, and the end of February (do they still do Nintendo Directs monthly?) would be the last time they can show off third party support before the other two start playing their hands.

If they don't want to do that by then, it doesn't speak greatly to their support actually existing.

If nothing else the PS3 has proven you can start crappily and recover even ignoring handhelds.

Honestly it's pathetic the way it's only 3 million behind considering the kind of lead the Wii had had all gen.

Well Vita is hard core gamer handheld, hopefully people on gaming forum would like it to succeed, right?

As to the Wii U, main question in the future will be if they get PS4/720 ports or PS3 ports. Because if they dont end up getting PS4/720 games, there will certainly be trouble.

But at the end, wanting/liking game console to fail, no matter who you prefer, is like stabbing yourself at the back. Nintendo or Sony or MS failing in console space means only bad things for gaming industry.

So was the information that led you to say that in August false, or were some projects cancelled since then? I understand if you can't answer.

If projects got canceled, I kind of have to wonder what went on given that I feel the Wii U hasn't really been out all that long (especially in Japan) for its sales to have canned lots of projects that were already in development, unless publishers are really fast on the trigger finger these days.

I mean Peter Moore went from "A very exciting machine... There’s nothing that could make me happier." and "Our key franchises will be there. We’ve made that commitment to Nintendo." to (at least according to a GAFfer at a Peter Moore talk) the Wii U is a failure and Nintendo should exit the hardware business, which seems kind of extreme on the relationship change scale.

Unfortunately Japanese executives don't tend to be nearly as talky as the Western ones outside of Wada, so we can't really compare their statements over time to infer how excited they are to support a platform.

strange situation for nintendo :

WOUHOU on one side, DOOOOOOMED on the other one.
I picture two adjoining meeting rooms at Nintendo. On one dude, sad, dejected souks with buried heads listening to the other dude celebrating. Iwata moving between the two and adjusting his emotion seamlessly.

I honestly don't understand what Nintendo is doing with the Wii U. I mean, how could they have not been prepared for this? They don't really even have third party software to back them up. They've released hardware before but just seems like amateur stuff to me.

Duuude didnt you heard? everything is under NDA!.

Wii U numbers aren't even disappointing. Hardly any Japanese software at launch, no new release in over a month, pretty much empty release schedule until March, and no eShop games outside of Tank! Tank! Tank!. Did Nintendo send all devkits to western devs or what?

Bad numbers for NI. :[

Maybe they should have put more effort into hastening that anime adaption of it so more people will notice it exists.

Hm strange. Before the launch people kept telling me that NSMBU, Monster Hunter and DQ would be more than enough to rule Japan for the next 100 years.

Horrible Wii U numbers, gotta wonder how Nintendo let's this happen after going through the same thing with the 3DS. They had so much time to get new games cooking after killing the Wii.

I also remember hearing the same thing.

Nintendo didn't orchestrate some complex gameplan with the 3ds. All they did was drop the price and start releasing already announced games. Result = sales take off like a rocket in the one region that is receptive towards handhelds.

Nintendo could drop the price of the Wii U, but it's barely any more expensive than a ps3 to begin with, so can you really say price is a problem? They can release already announced....oh wait there's nothing worth a damn announced. And Japan doesn't really like home consoles anymore, so there's also that little issue. How is this anything like the 3ds again?

I think people who were optimistic about wii u were expecting wii fit plus, the wonderful 101, game & wario, pikmin 3, NSMBU, DQX, MH3G and Nintendoland within the first few months of the systems lifespan like Nintendo had said.

I can see the WiiU go below 10k. Can not wait to see that for the reactions alone. It is clear the WiiU is not a Wii. The WiiU has no big releases to boost those hardware sales till March where Game and Wario launches and that is not even a big title. Its a piss poor launch lineup and Nintendo thought they could get away with just because they have MH ultimate and NSMBU.

With the WiiU showing such abysmal sales and even the ps3 possibly consistently outselling it throughout this month, it feels to me that Nintendo has totally wasted their head start. They should of released soem big titles in Q1 but it seems most are saved for the fall when the PS4 launches (if it does).

If PS4 has the right price and right games (MGS,FF,GT) then I can totally see the PS4 dominating the console space in Japan.

If nothing else the PS3 has proven you can start crappily and recover even ignoring handhelds.

Honestly it's pathetic the way it's only 3 million behind considering the kind of lead the Wii had had all gen.

The PS3 had the third parties on board.....FF, MGS,Tales of, RE, all acted like exclusives to the PS3 due to the 360's failure. The WiiU does not have the third party support and its very unlikely it will be exclusive. Furthermore it is clear Nintendo's franchises are far more successful on their handhelds and it is very unlikely the WiiU will get a mainline DQ or MH.

It is also pretty clear the casuals arre not adopting this system like the Wii so Nintendo's Wii lineup of games may not fare as well as they did last time. It will be interesting to see how Wii fit U does but I am not expecting anything spectacular.

I guess positive thing about Orbis and 720 would be that it will be easier to make good looking games on it than on PS3. It will be more expensive probably to make the best looking and best animated game ever, but making good looking games will be easier for sure. A lot easier.

Since Japanese devs have struggled with getting their games to run properly, this will probably make it easier for them. Especially for smaller studios that dont have engineering power/budget to spend a lot of time on game engine.

the most relevant thing to realise is how NSMBU has failed on absolutely all accounts to be a system seller.

gamers not giving a shit about a mainline mario game is unheard of, but there it is. let's hope that doesn't happen with pokemon.

Most Japanese devs have no reason to support Duranorbis, especially the ones who had trouble getting up speed on PS360. Durangorbis 3rd party software lineups are going to be mainly western games and Japanese games targeted primairily at the west.

Yeah, we had such classics threads as "Is there any reason Wii U won't dominate in Japan?" due to Monster Hunter, and Dragon Quest being on Wii U. Evidently, a lot of people just looked at the names, and forgot the games. One is a 3DS port, itself an expanded port of a Wii game. The other is a Wii port. I wouldn't exactly be camping outside waiting for those two.

scheulma said that was better support than what the Wii got, and that it was a sign of intent for future support. With the way Capcom's positioned the franchise, I don't think there will ever be a built for a home console Monster Hunter ever again, so Wii U's looking at more 3DS ports. Dragon Quest spinoffs for Wii U are likely, but it's obvious XI will be a 3DS game, which means XII on Wii U is years off.

It would be highly entertaining if Sony were to pull a miracle with PS4, and have that somehow outsell Wii U in Japan just to see the 180 Dragon Quest should do, lol. The only way that would happen is if Japan suddenly got tired of seeing Mario, and based on the sales charts, they aren't.

Note, since this draws only from the top 10 it does not represent smaller titles.
e.g., software sales of zero are assumed if the console has no games in the top 10.

Tally of the number of titles for that platform in the top 20 for each week.
I can't find the top 20 for PS3's second week. It has been assumed as zero.

I think they made a poor decision pushing out NSMB2 for the non-Japan 3DS market. Even Mario suffers from brand fatigue.

Looks like another post-holiday week in Japan.

I expect Wii U sales to be around this level until March or even more realistically, April. It's really pathetic how bad the drought is when they've been showing "launch window" software since e3.

So basically the same as ps3/360 third party?
Worse. PS360 got a good amount of JP focused stuff, though I expect some of the usual stawarts will still probably try to hold on with Orbis (NIS, Falcom, Gust, etc) like they are with Vita. I think there's little hope for Durango though, even the adv/shooter studios seem to be pulling back on 360.

Dragon Quest spinoffs for Wii U are likely, but it's obvious XI will be a 3DS game, which means XII on Wii U is years off.
At this point I think MMOs will be the only mainlines on consoles going forward. Which probably means DQXIII or DQXIV in a decade.

Maybe Wii U can get DQI-VI on the Virtual Console though.

The only way I see DQ on a PS platform in the foreseeable future is if Sony buys another 42% of SE and therefore controls them. Needless to say that's not happening given Sony's current financial situation and focus. If PS4 were to outsell the WiiU in Japan, the DQ series would just stay exclusive to the 3DS. I'm actually kinda surprised DQX is not on 3DS, maybe it's not capable of running MMOs?

Speaking of which will DQX Wii and DQX Wii U share the same servers or different servers?

As long as this doesn't affect the localization of SMT vs Fire Emblem, I don't care. I think they can get out of this slump. They still have their own first party studios.
