Destructoid: PS4 controller prototype & devkit photo, [Up: New Photo/Info In OP]

Wow, now that you mention it it seems so obvious. Would that be functional though? What about people put their consoles vertical? Won't that mess up the cameras?

That would be completely unusable in many situations, so I doubt it.

I don't think it's the camera. That would be a very large stereo base... and I don't think it would be wise to have it included in the console, both for the developers and the gamer : you would want to be able to place it freely without having to face the main hardware.

Its a devkit. The fact is theres a big piece of glass with something that looks like a lens on either side of that devkit. Doesn't mean that it will be built into the system in the final version though.

Now that all controllers are starting to change and differ from each other, how easy is it for developers to create multi platform games? I mean, the Wii U doesn't get some games, because of the unconventional controller. Even though this might not be the real reason, it is the reason they are giving us. Could this mean that third party exclusive games could make a big comeback next gen, since developers are apparently only willing to invest in one controller method?
The Gamepad isn't the reason the Wii U doesn't get multiplatform games.

What the heck is that?

And to the people saying that they want a pic of me using a Dualshock controller... nope. Why should I do that? If you don't believe that it sometimes happens to me (thumbs bumping together) then that's fine. Don't really care.

Another poster in this thread (and other people outside of here) feel the same way as me; not trying to bash.

Slightly off top, but my brothers friend (this is way back) used to play SNES with his thumbgs underneath the controllers, and used his remaining four fingers for the face buttons and d pad.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this (or at least the pages I have read haven't mentioned this)... the dual camera is in plain sight on that pic

Look at the big black rectangles on the left and right sides of the devkit. What else could it be?

I been saying it my last few posts in this thread

Let's not pretend using touchpad on the laptop wasn't some torturous experience for everyone and was exactly the reason mini-mouse was created.

Oh I give you that, for sure, I be the first to tell you that I never touch the touch-pad on my laptop ( I use a mouse) But why does the touch pad on the laptop suck exactly? does it suck for simple browser gestures, or does it suck trying to use the tip of your index finger to move a cursor around your screen?

Well if it's for the latter, I doubt you'll be using the touch pad on this thing as a mouse to move around a tiny cursor... I don't own a macbook (air ) or whatever, but if you ever played with the touchpad on those things (gestures to navigate webpages and desktop) it's actually very neat, and easy to use.

I am guessing it will make more sense for that type of navigation.

In shame at my fellow gamers I already hang my head in shame sir. Will you not see my point of view? I have clearly thought too much of you fine fellows of Gaf for not being able to see what it is that lies beneath the surface of this game they are playing with you. No, mock me if you will fellow gamers but remember this moment you will.

But even for a devkit, why would you add such a limitation to developers ? They'll also need to experiment their game in good conditions.
Anyway it would require additional effort to include the cameras inside the kit, instead of hooking a prototype to it. Why would Sony bother to do it, if it won't be in the final design ?

I've no problem with the 360 controller other than the Dpad. The asymmetrical layout is nice, but dual shock can be fixed by simply moving the sticks away from each ore a bit.
I don't see any real benefit of one over the other. I will say that asymmetry is directly related to the fact that the 360 sticks have concave nubs.

This is a fucking awesome controller. Sony has done it again and made the definite gaming controller of this millenium even better.

Yup. It has to be it, right? I think people don't believe its the dual camera because it makes no sense that its built into the system. But considering its a devkit, it likely will change for the final hardware to be separate. Its probably just easier to stuff everything in one box for developers to use.

Its something they just slapped together to get out there for developers. Its the same reason that box won't be the final PS4 form factor either. Its obviously a custom made box, and not just a PC tower. So they had to put effort into making it even if its not for retail.

Good point. Should be interesting to see.

My guess is that there will be unique features in various versions of multiplatform games early on (first 2 years or so) but then everything will become pretty much the same.

Kojima is going to bring back Psycho Mantis again with this controller.
Psycho Mantis " Put your controller down"
You put the controller down.
Psycho Mantis will "listen" through the mic.
No one is talking, Psycho says "it is very silent where you are, speak up"
You say "what?"
He says "Do I need to repeat myself?"
You say "this is a stupid gimmick again!"
Psycho replies "You're stupid!!!"

I agree. Guys keep in mind:

You're right, they might get cold feet and make this one terrible instead of great just like they did with the boomerang. They had sound ergonomics and they threw them away.

Are you also unable to press the start/select buttons on a DualShock because the sticks get in the way?
I never had to press the start button unless I was pausing the game. At which point I usually put down the controller so it didn't interfere with any stick usage.. It's pretty naive to think that this touch pad exists just to replace the start and select button, it's quite an expensive replacement don't you think?

People are STILL saying this is too small when it's clearly been widened in the middle?

I have massive (Massive!) hands and the DS has never been a problem. Neither will this.

I was just referring to the position of those buttons, and no, a capacitive touchpad isn't very expensive at all.
