Destructoid: PS4 controller prototype & devkit photo, [Up: New Photo/Info In OP]

I dont understand people who use their middle fingers for the second triggers.

on 360 index fingers on triggers and i move them up to the bumpers as needed.

On 360 the middle of my index fingers works the top buttons while the top of my index fingers works the triggers. No real need to move from the trigger to the top buttons. Might be a hand size thing though.

Err, shiny touch pads are SUPER common on laptops. Don't put too much faith in it being a screen.

This is the laptop I use (with shiny touch pad):

And with the click of the big button there, this appears on it:

I'm guessing we'll see something like this on the controller as well.

...if it's not an OLED, that is......

Bear with me here.

What if you set each user account with a certain color, and then you set a controller to a certain color, and THEN say I'm playing and I'm "blue" and then my friend turns another controller on with the controller "red" and it automatically signs him in too.

Okay. The idea kind of fell apart as I started fleshing it out...but I think there's something there.

I think they would have to be quite spaced apart if they were really going to offer decent depth perception. They look like cameras to me.

But why fixed? Even on a dev unit the developer might not have it in a convenient place for play testing

And why so far apart? If you built those into a single unit it looks like it'd be wider than a kinect, and that's already massive.

I wonder if they might go crazy and have two separate cameras? Remember Time Crisis and the guncon 3 with two separate sensors you clipped onto the corners of your TV?

Considering the small size of the DS3 controller, the rumoured PS4 controller doesn't seem big at all.

Assuming the face buttons will remain the same size.

With which part of your fingers do you press the shoulder triggers in that position?

I use the tips (just the tip) and the hands need to slide down much lower on the grips to comfortably do that.

Sony Eyepad®

Why do you assume that you will need to use touchpad and rest at the same time ? It's like start button. You use it occasionally.

That is what will happen, there's no longer 4 ID lights so it has to be done with colour instead.

Any of this.

People bitch about everything until it comes out and then everything goes quit. It's like when a baby is crying for a bottle and they only shut up once they have it since they're too busy using it.

Alright that's pretty great.

Yep agree with that 100%

Sony seems to disagree.
With what? It's not really a debatable issue, if you don't place your thumbs to overlap the sticks then they don't touch if you push them both inwards.

If anything they just acknowledged that there are a lot of goobers.

I do not see the point of a touchscreen as it will break easily (the glass) and make the dualshock more expensive that it already is. Yeah ok maybe you can use the touch for something here and there but it is not worth it in my opinion.

More expensive for whom? Because while I'm sure Sony is going to charge $60 for this controller, it's not going to cost that much money to make. Glass and all. Even if they have a fancy Leappad-like touchpad thing.

Rockefellers. Skull and Bones. Microsoft. Al Qaeda. A Cabal of Bankers. The melting point of steel. What do these things have in common? Wake up sheeple, the landfill wasn't even REAL!

Good job man. Seems way bigger

Move basically chooses the colour of the ball during calibration, to give the best contrast, you don't really choose in case you pick a 'bad' colour. But there might be more flexibility this time around?

Personally I'm not sure why its lighting up at all - why wouldn't they go with IR LEDs on the controller and an IR sensitive camera? Most camera are IR sensitive by default anyway

Because some games require it (recently DmC). One of my major issues with the 360 pad.

Gaf is about to freak the fuck out over the aesthetics of a prototype controller.

What's funny is the crew that mistakes aesthetics for ergonomics. Look at all the "ugly and uncomfortable" posts already. *Has flashbacks at all the horrendously unergonomic WiiU mockups people came up with.*

Is it a little fatter? Yeah. And it's not glossyied up since it's a prototype, but that thing looks like it's got a significant bump in the ergonomics/comfort level (probably due to it's slightly fatter profile).

Makes sense for sports games if the color matches your player outline in the game. How many times have you started up FIFA or madden with your friends and everyone is like "Am I green?", "I think I'm blue", "Pause it, lets check who's what"

That's exactly what I was saying. Everyone cries and whines that it's not pretty enough (although it will likely look better anyway since this is just a prototype) but you'll hear basically nobody after the thing launches since people will be busy playing games with a controller that's actually comfortable.

Personally, I hope they keep it matte.

I was of the mind that it won't even be used for Move stuff since motion seems like it would be kind of clunky, but you still may be right.

Not being a fanboy, (almost) definitely going PS4 next gen, just really don't like DS layout of sticks.

Oh well, the added bulk probably makes it a bit more comfortable.

edit: am sorry to bitch in this awesome thread

Kinect gets its depth from IR or whatever, not stereoscopic vision. I think for stereo cameras to sense depth accurately they would have to be quite far apart.

You still get different colours for different players, for obvious reasons, but as you say they might be allocated and changed by the system.

I can't believe the IQ level drop on some Gaffers in this thread. Come the 20th, it's going to be nutter butter around here.

Man would be awesome if that is a 3.5mm audio jack on the controller.

Still have no idea why we need a touch pad.

Meh.. but after reading the rumor about the touchpad only earlier today.... this is 1000000000x better than that...

It looks so cheap and nasty. It's like that cruddy 3rd party controller that nobody wants to use at a party.

Where is the usual sexy Sony design? This is horrendous.

I Can't believe people actually think it looks good.

I understand why, I was just comparing. I think kinect is bordering too big for an accessory, and if this is even wider then that is not something I want stuck in front of my TV 24/7

KOTAKU confirms: This is a Real Prototype PS4 Controller

An industry source familiar with the new system tells us the photo is the real deal. But bear in mind, it may not represent the final form of the controller. The touch-pad on the front of the controller is particularly interesting. According to the official Orbis documentation that was shared with us a few weeks ago, it will be a two-point multi-touch capable "pad" similar to the one on the back of the Vita. It can also be clicked for an additional input. Curiously, this prototype seems to not include a "Share" button, despite that button being described in the documentation.

SONY: "We can't comment on rumors or speculation."
