Destiny Reveal Thread

Wait what. People are disappointed because lack of gameplay shown? Fuckin' two hours ago people were losing their shit at the possibility of seeing a taste of in engine stuff and then we got a taste of in engine AND gameplay. I don't get it.

And they gave us this much information:
http://kotaku.com/5984648/everything-i-know-about-bungies-next-first+person-shooter-destiny

I wasn't expecting anything. Yet when some indie kickstarter goes, "Hey guys! I want to make a game with everything in it! Here's a picture I drew" a lot of gamers are like, "Wow, amazing! The possibilities are staggering. Cannot wait! Here is 100 bucks!"

It sounds like this should have been held back for a bit. I'm glad to have seen what we've seen; it makes me extremely excited.

But the gaming press and the legion of gamers collectively have massive blue balls and anything less than the realization of their next-gen fantasies will not suffice.

I think they might have forced this announcement out because of the increasing number of leaks on the game. At one point it was getting rather embarrassing until they came out and said "yes, it's real, we're working on this, we'll show it really soon!" and then people calmed down.

I love Bungie and all, but it seems they got a little cocky and thought no matter what they say, people will get excited.
Maybe they were a little too long in that Halo bubble, getting feedback mostly from their super hardcore Halo fanbase and extrapolated from there.

Or their timing was influenced because of the PS Event, or the Destiny leaks earlier this year.

There definitely seems to be at least some pushback from journalists who feel they're spreading their marketing campaign too thin, showed too little, talked it up too much. There's so much stuff coming out and happening (especially in the coming weeks/months!), no one except Halo and MMO sites will really have the time and space to cover Destiny if they keep up such a piecemeal reveal.

Maybe they'll get the feedback and do an actual proper reveal/blowout next time.

I feel this kind of announcement in and of itself isn't too unusual, but the fact that they flew people out and heavily hyped it up instead of just having it at an event people already were at is.

One thing I'm still unsure on is the release window. It seemed it was set for 2013 but Ryan seemed really skeptical about that in the stream today.

Sounds like the press isn't happy:

I think it's the fault of the press showing up though. On the IGN stream they said that Bungie told the press beforehand it wasn't a game reveal, but the reveal of the 'universe'.

To get some standalone media attention without the coverage having to contend with all the other stuff about the PS4 reveal & the other games that will be shown there?

But by showing the current gen version, and showing very little at that hasn't really done them the world of good. They're not getting too much praise in the media because of it. Why not have shown a teaser at the Sony thing and done the full reveal in a couple of weeks!

I think most were expecting some gameplay, even before Geoff tweeted we'll be seeing in-engine footage. Seeing 3-4 second bits of a character moving doesn't do shit, especially after your game has been in development for almost 4 years now.

I just found your post a little silly. You said who cares about journalists...well why not? Everyone's sharing their opinions here.

I certainly don't feel sorry for them complaining about travelling around and getting to see things before the average joe does. Plus they get paid to do it. That's all I'm saying.

Agree. That's the most bizarre part of it. Who thought it would be a good idea to fly a bunch of jaded game journalists out and make them waste half a day looking at some concept art?

That's the only reason I can think of putting it out there. They've run a very leaky ship.

I think this game has potential, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Your dream is a worthy one, but Bungie didn't show any of that today - it was all talk. Even for the press that went out of their way to see it.

I agree. I'm on the cautiously optimistic train for now. Anyone can make intriguing concept art, so we'll have to see how their vision and art comes to life.

I think the problem with this game (and this is probably a really good problem to have) is that it is so high profile that Activision did not in any way want to give the impression that it wasn't a HUGE deal, so whatever the first announcement of the game is, it would be an event they would fly people down to and hype up a lot. So it's not something they would just want to launch a site and throw out a press release, leaving a later date for a more detailed reveal with invites to journalists. Maybe they should have done that, but they probably felt it would make the game feel "small".

I can't imagine being one of the Euro press that flew in just to be told "No comment" repeatedly. Sure, free trip, but it's also Seattle in the Winter (cold, nasty and wet).

I'm with you. It's their fucking job, what do I care.
Next time don't go cover the release of Bungie's new IP.

Its all slightly strange. UK and Euro journalists were also over and I don't exactly understand why.

I'm looking forward to reading EDGE's take on the day. Got to presume they were there alongside other Brit press such as Eurogamer.

now that I think about it, this franchise is worse off by coming out on current gen hardware. the fundamental design for this franchise has been crippled by having to work within the constraints of ps3/360. they should release solely on next gen and use that added power to fundamentally expand the potential of the franchise.

The next gen versions of the first game won't be all they could have been and the game in general will have faced cutbacks just due to the fact that resources had to be allocated to get the next gen version out.

All in all this is just a really awkward time to start a 10 year franchise.

Yes it is their job.

But I've experienced enough bullshit business events or "training" events that despite being paid the feeling of being pissed off isn't any less. Wasting time is wasting time.

Wrong. I'm disappointed because what they've been working on for all these years is simply a mashup of Test Drive Unlimited/Guild Wars/PSO/Borderlands and due to the fact that they hyped all this shit up to release a bunch of non-info that amounts to "The game is totally awesome, guise! trust us!".

This scenario sounds the most plausible to me. Did Bungie over-hype the reveal (journos and all), or did the masses hype the reveal? It met my expectations and then some.

Persistent world, so no.

They haven't actually confirmed it's a persistent world I think. They've confirmed that characters are persistent, the game is always connected, and it is server based. But they have not really confirmed if missions are instances or on a persistent landscape, nor have they confirmed single dedicated servers. At least, not that I remember reading. It could very well be like Guild Wars.

You don't know what is yet to come, what if digitally purchasing the Game for a current gen console lets you play it on the next gen console?

Sounds a lot like Monster Hunter Ultimate 3 rather than a MMO

I just can't fathom Bungie releasing a 360 game in 2014.

Just seems totally absurd.

i know, but what did we see? a few characters running around in environments? it was gameplay footage, but with no game play. doesnt inspire much confidence.

This and only showing current gen stuff when all our minds are turned for the next generation (especially with the Sony reveal in 3 days). I can understand the dissapointment.

I seriously doubt they be showing PS4 footage of Destiny at that event, I still think that contract for 1 year exclusive to next Xbox is still in place even though it is old. Look how scared shitless Activison was about pissing off MS in past, Durango Destiny footage will be at E3 on stage in Microsoft's presentation more than likely. Unless this thing turns out so unimpressive MS decides not even care and decides they don't want to wate any monies.

Jeff Gerstmann actually drew the Guild Wars comparison. So not really an MMO but will will interact with/see lots of other players will you are playing.
