Destiny won’t release in 2013

Bungie's upcoming sci-fi shooter MMO Destiny will not be coming in 2013, according to a press release that publisher Activision sent out this morning. The release explains that Destiny is not included in Activision's 2013 outlook and "there should be no speculation or expectation of a different result".

The release also reiterated that Destiny is confirmed for "the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, as well as other future console platforms", which presumably means the next Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

With the PlayStation 4 announcement presumably happening this Wednesday, and early speculation pointing to a Holiday 2013 launch frame for both the new Xbox and PlayStation 4, that means Destiny will not be a next-gen launch title.

For reference, Activision's fiscal year ends December 31, 2013, so this doesn't look like financial double speak either. If this release is read as final and binding, we won't see Destiny in 2013.

This essentially confirms next-gen releases for Destiny. There's no way Activision would release a current-gen-only, big-budget game in 2014.

In one sentence, why exactly did they choose yesterday to 'reveal' the game when they had nothing to show, and so far from release

That's a damn good question. I mean they literally showed like jack shit yesterday. Talk about your early reveals, gesh.

I would assume CoD=fall, Destiny = Spring.

Will be pissed if it's a current gen game in 2014.

People actually think it's only current gen? It's cross gen, they just didn't say so because the new consoles have yet to be unveiled.

I hope Bungie hasn't gotten too cocky / lazy after their Halo successes...

Methinks this was Activision's decision to do a reveal, not Bungie.

If that's true why even bother showing the game this early?

Surely E3 with a more firmer showing would have been wiser?

The article and source may be new but that particular slice of news is old. As Nirolak notes in the other thread, the game not being factored into Acti's FY2013 does not necessarily confirm it's not to release this year.

Jeff Gerstmann (or was it Keighley?) said around six years lol.

Dev times are sooo long. I've lost a lot of interest of pursuing a career in the gaming industry because I'm afraid of getting stuck in one of the vidya factories or become burned out on some long project.

Bungie said that they were thinking about the game during the development of Halo 2. But that doesn't mean they had any kind of team working on it at that time. Probably just an ideas on a whiteboard kind of thing.

i don't know why they revealed it so early. also, didn't the contract say that bungie will get a huge bonus if the game sells 10+ million or so, cant see that happening with a 14 release on cross gen systems.

Unsurprised from yesterday, it sounded really far off still but why go through all the hassle of the reveal yesterday then?

I'm sure they'll manage 10m across 4 platforms and shoving down everyone's throats "FROM THE CREATORS OF HALO AND THE PUBLISHER OF CALL OF DUTY".

Wow. There's just so much about this game that has me scratching my head. The decision to announce it now, the fact that this is running on possibly present and next gen systems...? And it's not even releasing this year?

Maybe we are being set up to be wowed at the Sony meeting, but so far I don't know what to think about Destiny.

Well, you can start getting disappointed. All the pre-order cards are PS3/360. I fully expect "next-gen" versions if it's indeed not releasing until at least next year, but my interest is almost killed. The game may not have been fully imagined with new hardware in mind, so the design could be shackled to current-gen.

Increasing resolution, draw distance, and other effects is great, but it's not exactly the same as designing it from the get-go with a much more ambitious scale. Sure, they could have started with a next-gen design, but current gen releases will be pathetically crippled if that's the case. I'm not sure if that's something they're interested in.

That would be 10 years ago then. Give or take a year. I think real production started after Halo 3 launched which would be 07-08.

I totally expected this game to not come out in 2013. If you saw the footage from the ViDoc you would know that if the game was coming out this year it would be much further along graphically than what we saw. I fully expect it to be properly announced for next gen once those consoles are announced.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new generation of gaming is upon us. Today, Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), together with critically-acclaimed developer Bungie, revealed the first sneak peak of their partnership. The game, called Destiny, is an ambitious evolution of the first-person action genre that brings gamers together in a shared, persistent world. The result of a large-scale collaboration between Activision, the publisher of such mega franchises as Call of Duty, Skylanders Spyro’s AdventureTM and Skylanders GiantsTM, and Bungie, the creators of Halo®, Destiny is poised to become the next advancement in interactive entertainment by melding first-person action gaming with a persistent, dynamic online world.

“Together we are focusing the considerable resources, creativity and energy of both organizations to do something new, something ambitious, but most importantly, something fun.”
Destiny combines Bungie’s trademark grand scope, sci-fi storytelling and adventures with visceral first-person action gaming that takes place in an unfolding, cinematic universe. Additionally, Destiny delivers a unique social gaming experience to consoles by offering players a connected, living world that they can explore, combined with vibrant social spaces where they can congregate and celebrate achievements, and share remarkable adventures grouped with friends or solo.

“Bungie defined first-person action games over a decade ago with Halo, and with Destiny they will evolve the genre once again,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “Destiny is a world that evolves. It is a world with wide boundaries that allows you to roam and explore. It is a world where, even in story mode, you could encounter other players on their own adventures. And of course, it is a world that brings all of this together with the visceral, heart pounding immediacy of an expertly crafted first-person action title. We are very excited to bring this ambitious, innovative and creative game to players around the world.”

“Activision focuses on doing a few things, exceptionally well. And Bungie has had the same ethos,” Hirshberg continued. “Together we are focusing the considerable resources, creativity and energy of both organizations to do something new, something ambitious, but most importantly, something fun.”

Set in the distant future, Destiny casts players as Guardians of the last city on Earth, who will traverse the ancient ruins of our solar system from the red dunes of Mars to the lush jungles of Venus. Able to wield incredible power, players must battle humanity’s enemies and reclaim all that was lost during the collapse of mankind’s Golden Age. In a story-driven universe, Destiny’s saga unfolds through grand tales and sweeping adventures by immersing gamers in a bold new world filled with cooperative, competitive, public, and social activities, all seamlessly connected. Bungie’s new next-generation game engine will allow Destiny to come to life on both the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, as well as other future console platforms.

“Destiny is the game that we’ve been dreaming of building for years. We couldn’t be more pleased about our extraordinary collaboration with Activision. We finally have the right partner, team and technology to bring the experience to millions of players worldwide,” said Harold Ryan, Bungie president. “Destiny will draw players into a world filled with mystery, action, and adventure, but most importantly, Destiny is more than a disc in a drive, it is a living social universe filled with other players.”

“Not only does Destiny look amazing, but its new living world will change the way players think of co-operative online gaming,” said global retailer GameStop president Tony Bartel. “This is just the type of innovation the game industry has been waiting for and I’m anxious for players to experience the vast universe of Destiny.”

For more information, visit www.DestinyTheGame.com. For exclusive updates, follow the official Destiny social channels at www.facebook.com/DestinyTheGame and @DestinyTheGame on Twitter, and interact directly with the developers at www.Bungie.net. Pre-order the game now at select retailers around the world. Activision reiterated that although Bungie’s amazing new world was revealed today, Activision has not included the launch in its 2013 outlook and there should be no speculation or expectation of a different result.

A port from a launch window title is to be expected. I don't know if it will have the same punch in 2014 comparing against games designed solely around the new hardware.

I want to know how they are going to handle the servers for this. Will the PS3 players be able to play with Orbis players? Same for 360/Durango?

Can't say I expected it to.

Yeah, Bungie has been teasing it for a LONG time. When they were giving out Halo swag bags for the Japanese earthquake release they included things in there as well which are now obviously tied to the game.

What was the point of revealing yesterday?

Unless they wanted to reveal on their own time instead of at Sony or Microsoft event. Could easily see this game be advertised with the next gen consoles as something coming down the pipeline shortly after they release.

Makes since though to wait for the next gen consoles. Would be strange to release on the PS360 then a few months later release on the next gen consoles and potentially be asking for another $60 for the same game...

Either way not rushing the game is a good thing, and probably one of the request Bungie had with Activision not to release games on a fiscal calendar, but instead when they are ready.

It's better to announce it now in the lull before the storm, instead of after the PS4 reveal, when everyone would be distracted.

I think that the rumor of an exclusivity for next gen console can be killed now

Maybe they needed to get this out of the way now.

Perhaps they'll be on stage demoing on Wednesday and didn't want anyone to think it was a PS4 exclusive?

If ever a "major" gaming event fit that itsfuckingnothing gif, this one did yesterday. Old footage and the revelation that they invited a bunch of media up to Seattle for a Q&A session that resulted in more "No comment"s than actual info equates to me not really giving a damn about their project anymore. I'm sure when it's mere months from release I'll get interested again, but only if it's a next gen title. Not interested in buying new full price titles for consoles I've already replaced.

Yeah, I hope it was out of necessity. If it was truly meant to hype the gaming world, I think they failed spectacularly.

Well, since the PS4 is rumored to be released in 2013 only in Japan, and 2014 in the rest of the world, I don't expect most, if any, of next-gen/multi-gen games to be released this year.

Ok...well then, page me when it's 2014 and I'll start giving Destiny a look. I'm kinda over these one year + long marketing fiascos.
