So it's not exclusivity, and there's no way it's exclusivity (as already reported), so what is it? If it's DLC, no one really gives a shit. Destiny will supposedly have PS4 exclusive DLC, that's fine and all but hardly a partnership worthy of making a big deal out and neither would EA DLC.

Any other ideas? Must be something bigger than DLC if it's getting leaked like this, no?

yup, announcing this partnership doesn't mean its just DLCs, its just too small an effect, must be bigger

Sony is in a nice unique postion with the whole 'used games' thing. We know they have a patent to actually enforce the PS4 to not be able to play used games, but they have no need to use it unless it becomes a barganing chip for them. Like if MS comes out blocking used games, Sony could follow suit and any market advantage MS gained from that move will roll over to Sony aswell.

But taking it one step further, once MS comes out and it creates such a strong backlash from the community, Sony can go ahead with 'We won't block it teehee' and become the 'gamer's answer'.

I think more than ever the quote from yosp is making sense now 'Why go first'.

The forum backlash would be huge. But much like the infamous MW2 boycott, the vast majority will collapse like a wet flan to get their hands on them games.

They most certainly would not. Especially if Microsoft follows through with those rumored draconian measures. If Microsoft thinks they can simply buy their way into the living room while hailing anti-consumer business practices they're wrong.

I wouldn't skip "Activision" games nor would I skip "EA" games. I would skip the ones involved with the exclusivity. Just like EA.

If a company feels like my money is worth less than the money of another person I'm going to exercise my right to not purchase offending products.

It's weird how my decision was a stand-out enough point you had to take a 'stab' at me though, lol

(I haven't played a Call of Duty game more than an hour this generation so it's a moot point.)

No Destiny for you then.

That's money lost for EA.

Good luck to anyone who thinks this is more than DLC or that Kinect game from Crytek.

How is MS moneyhatting them lost money?

The PS4 install base initially will be tiny. Which means the sales of EAs games won't be much to begin with. If MS are covering the losses, on top of the saving of developing for the second platform, all towards the goal of blocking used games long term, then it makes perfect sense from a business perspective.

Remember, these consoles will have tiny install bases for the first 6 months to a year, that's when the moneyhats can be smaller.

All the more reason to not have 3rd party exclusives. It might be easier to moneyhat developers early but do you really think Activision or EA would take that money for an exclusive game in the fear they back the wrong horse?

What if consumers reject the next xbox because of "No 2nd hand games & always online" so an EA exclusive sells like shit. Do you think the money they receive will be enough to cover development costs?

Anyway, this talk is stupid as EA have confirmed PS4 support and BF4 on PS4. If a deal exists its timed exclusive DLC bollocks

Their DLC partnerships worked out quite well for them. I wouldn't say "no one really gives a shit"

If they can get on Respawn's new game early or the next Battlefield like they did with CoD and GTA it would be a pretty big deal.

It looks like the new xbox will be the machine to buy for multiplatform games with all its dlc released first.

Bt that's the point.

If gamers know the Xbox is the only place of get the next gen version of Madden or FIFA, then they're going to buy the Xbox. Maybe GAFfers won't, but gamers in the real world will. THAT'S what MS and EA would be banking on in this scenario.

There's no way to know it would work of course, but that's the sort of gamble they'd take with the bigger goal in mind. Removing the used game market.

To me this looks like MS really is trying to do away with 2nd hand games. EA would definitely like that enough to give them a crapton of exclusives ;)

If Durango does block 2nd hand games it won't be MS doing away with them it will be the publishers. I'm quite sure MS would want massive assurances from all the major publishers to carry this out, I don't expect that to be exclusive titles but certaintly more features.

I'm calling it now '3 month timed exclusive for BF4 and FIFA' - problem being it'll sound great but the reality is that XB3 will launch 3 mths earlier than PS4 anyway.

That's not how these companies transition to next gen platforms... They make current/older gen versions to cover the larger install bases while people eventually adopt the new consoles.

This is all wishful thinking from fanboys.

Except Destiny.

Personally - I have NEVER paid for DLC so this won't affect me in anyway. But I will still buy both Next Xbox and PS4...

Sure if you want the bad ports then go ahead.

If EA is serious about removing the biggest competitor to their licensed sports titles; used games; they'll go all in. Which could mean 'new only' policy for select titles. If only MS offers this then EA may be drawn to give them either:

- The best version of the game, afterall their not going to killer current gen versions.
- The only next-gen version of the game.
- EA will offer paid services through Origin and Live customers get automatic access.

Exclusive DLC/Timed Releases seems like an out of date practice but there are less gains from cross platform when we are at the start of a gen so maybe MS is willing to pay an amount EA would be very happy with.

However I think this is a backward policy for MS and one that just costs money with not a huge amount of benefit unless its really notable. The more notable, the more costly, the less likely.

I have a feeling the PS4 exclusive stuff for Destiny will be along the lines of micro-transaction stuff and probably some tying into the PS4 and other brands. If this is not the line Bungie/Activision are taking then Destiny is a mess to my eyes; but their not stupid so I suspect this is the main DLC offers.

I know this is all talk now, but....fuckin called it.

Microsoft will moneyhat the shit out of this console launch.

A lot of that money is going to spent on "convincing" devs to incorporate Kinect into their new games. It's not like they're lining up outside of Redmond begging to be able to work on Kinect.

Yup, they did it at the start of the 360, why not again? No reason they won't come out swinging again, only to chill later when their sales are steady.

I thought that was more because EA was pissed with all the stupid business decisions that Sega did in the 90s?

EA, the company that made its fortune on the back of the Mega Drive/Genesis, dumped Sega in part because they made their own sports games.

Wishful thinking from fanboys? What are you talking about? You sound like you're scared or something. I haven't bought a FIFA game since 10, never owned Madden, and hated Battlefield. Even if MS has locked down one or all makes zero difference to me.

Hell, blocking used games makes no difference to me. I never buy used games and don't lend or borrow them. I'm a collector, I buy all consoles regardless. The stuff I've been talking about is based on business, not gaming. It's all pretty logical when you take the business perspective. Nothing wishful about it.

Who would WISH for used games to be blocked? There's no tangible benefit in it for gamers. But there is for these....businesses.

I bet EA have been whispering in Microsofts ear; 'you know what would be great? An always on connection, think of the possibilities, and a one time activation code per disc - it's what the devs want *licks lips*'. Honestly, EA are the devil incarnate when it comes to anti-consumer practices, and this partnership only convinces me more that the nextbox is going to be what we all fear it is.

If the myth of used sales damaging developers and preventing mid-tier games is true, then that's one benefit to us. Big "if" there.

Is this a megaton or a gigaton, EA being exclusive is a gamechanger

neither GAF calm down. EA has already said the PS4 is a powerhouse and they love it. They are supporting Sony.

It's more likely they have agreed for timed exclusive DLC or exclusive DLC for some of their upcoming franchises. Similarly to current GEN Activision deal. 30-60 days before PS4

Any full exclusivity would be suicide if the Nextbox turns out to be the middle teered console in terms of power.

Depends on what it is.

Something like Madden or BF exclusive to Xbox, would mean I have to have an Xbox day 1. If this is EA showing love to MS for blocking used games, then EA's games should be exclusive to Xbox. Otherwise, it's a bone-headed move by MS.

If you're going to call out stupid comments man, maybe have a look at the one I quoted. What does this business decision have to do with fanboys. No one wants used games blocked.

I don't recall saying that any gamer wants used games blocked.

I said fanboys want EA game exclusivity. Just scan through this thread or the "Will Microsoft bring it?" thread.

I cant believe Im thinking they have got exclusivity on one or more sports games aka madden. BF4 of course they announced at the conferemce yesterday but no madden or anything. Its about to be march and we have yet to hear of any new madden next gen news at all. Madden 25 press release only announced ps3/360 as platforms to get the game. With no madden at the conference or sony event one has to believe MS has got some hand in this. Madden even showed up at freakin Wii U e3 2011. I dont think this could be the possible because of how big madden is but maybe they want to take a chance. Madden has been stale as fuck the whole generation and an embarrasment to even be called a football game. If MS gave EA some funds to mega produce this shit it could be big. But yea Im just speculating very wildly.

Thats great but just a couple of problems regarding FIFA.

One, FIFA has always sold more on Playstation than xbox.
Two, FIFA wont allow it. All FIFA games to be sold on all major platforms. EA break that they will be in breach of contract

As Madden already sells better on xbox, what would be the point of MS moneyhatting that or do you think their strategy is to expand into Europe who couldn't give a fuck about American football

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage

I've seen several people on this board who do want them blocked, sadly.

I really hope that won’t mean console exclusive games because that would mean no PC releases.
With Origin, you'd think doing that would be EA cutting their own throat.

Timed exclusive DLC for BF might make sense. But having that extend to other EA titles? I don't know. Timed exclusive games? That seems even more stupid. All you'd need is one game to have a mediocre reception and then you'd be sending it to die by releasing late on other platforms.

You can stop right there. The NFL would NEVER allow it. They are strict as hell about merchandise and making as much money as possible.
