OK, I'm cranky old guy. But I'm fucking tired of super-hero movies. As that thread on space movies showed, there are actually not that many great space movies. Can't someone make a great space movie instead of yet more me-too super-hero dreck? FFS.

/curmudgeon done.

Honestly it's time for GAF curmudgeon club. We have more money and power than these little shits. Plus we already made all the same idiot mistakes they're making.

BAH

- Imagine a Nolan story with Snyder effects/action
oh good so jor-el will explain everything that's happening

- There’s TONS of action with Superman kicking all kinds of ass in his suit.
but no red trunks

- The cape is CG’d most of the time so it can look awesome.
it's faaaake

- They have intentionally left out most of the the Super action in trailers to save it.
no they're lying

- It’s not nearly as dour and serious as the trailers suggest.
to prepare the audience for aquaman cameo

- The movie is complete, minus the 3D post-conversion, which is currently taking place
faaaake 3D

I think there is still a lot that can be done with the space setting.

But fine . . . fuck space. Do the Bioshock movie. An underwater city. Just something besides another fucking crop of summer super-hero movies. I can't take it anymore. I don't need to see the same fucking super-hero's rebooted for the third time.

Finally a good superman movie

Take that you dope Singer

There would be no Nolan Batman trilogy (and thus Man of Steel) without Bryan Singer. He revived the super hero genre and set the modern standard with X-Men and X2. Singer is basically the father of the modern super hero movie genre. He is far from a dope.

Why would Nolan give a shit if Zack Snyder's Superman was in 3D?

His name is all over this film as much as Snyder's. Considering he has been very outspoken against 3D and WB obviously does not force it upon him, I would think that he not exactly thrilled with a post 3D conversion.

You're giving Singer way too much credit. WB was working on rebooting Batman for years.

Yeah, they're using his name as promotion. I don't think he's really involved much at all, and has made it 100% clear it's Snyder's movie.

I love the first two X-Men movies (especially part two), but this statement seems a little far fetched. WB was always keen to do another Batman movie, even after B&R sucked so hard. Darren Aronofsky's pitch for Year One was to make it a more grounded in reality universe also, and that was a couple years before X-Men. I believe he wanted it to be an R-rated movie, so WB backed out after the script. Goyer had already had success with adapting comics with Blade a couple years before X-Men as well.

Aronofsky's "Year One" was going to be Rated R at one point, and the script (co-written with Frank Miller) was fucking terrible. You can read it. They were simultaneously developing a live action Batman Begins, and according to Paul Dini, that too, was a clusterfuck.

Warner Bros working on something for years didn't mean it was going to happen. Hell, technically, they're STILL working on making a Superman movie, and that's after they got the guy who made the first to X-men movies to MAKE a Superman movie.

Considering Warners headhunted Singer for their movie, I think the argument that Singer played an important part in setting the stage for the era of the modern superhero movie holds SOME weight.

He gets some credit for making a great movie in X2. That's about it.

The rise of the superhero movie was inevitable as CG effects improved.

As long as they have at least a couple of great Zod lines, I'll be happy. "Why do say these things...when you know I will kill you for it?" "Kneel before Zod (bitch)!"

Yeah, NOW.

but remember back to like, 2004-2005. Dude had made Usual Suspects. Apt Pupil was thought of as a solid follow up. He succeeds with X-Men even after Fox took away a large chunk of his budget WHILE he was filming, and then followed it up with a movie that many, at the time, were putting up there as one of the best superhero films ever made.

X-Men-to-X2 was the first template a lot of studios were following, before Begins-to-Dark Knight gave them a different template to work from.

Yeah, it was inevitable that WB would make another Batman/Superman movie. It'd be financial suicide not to. But looking at how long it took to make those movies - it wasn't inevitable they would take the shape they did, and part of that has to do with Fox's success w/ X-Men

The direction WB went with the Batman franchise had far more to do with the failure of Batman & Robin than X-Men.

ETA: Funnily enough, Man of Steel is just as much a reaction to the dull, pacifist Superman Returns as Batman Begins was to the camp of Batman & Robin. Similarly equal and opposite reactions to creative failures.

Remember, early impressions of TDK Rises were very positive too. Keep that in mind before hoping on the hype train.

yeah and it turned out good so what's the problem?

i'm cranky too but Superman deserves a good, no, great sumemr film. it's Superman!

Oh, I do agree with this. But, going from this to "there would be no Nolan Batman films without Singer" is the leap I can't make.

The rise of the superhero movie was inevitable.

This I agree with also. I mean, Spider-Man was already well into pre-production with Sam Raimi before X-Men was released. I think if X-Men and Spider-Man bombed, we would have gotten less super hero movies, but we were definitely still getting a new Batman and Superman, and there was at least a 50/50 chance Batman was going to be the more grounded tone we wound up with since that was something WB was exploring for years before X-Men.

Nolan story + Snyder action? Does that mean the characters deliver exposition during slowmo fight scenes? Only way that combo could actually make sense without the movie being 5 hours long.

Can't wait for this, it's about damn time. People who are down on this must have no soul. It's superman, people. I'm not even a superman comic book reader, but we haven't had a proper superman flick in decades.

Comparisons to Nolan worry me. I guess as long as they don't fuck up the characterization like Nolan did then it won't be too bad.
