THE POWER OF BUTTERSCOTCH BOTTOMS
Lol, so that's why I found this post a little weird.

I saw that too.
It all makes sense.

well I've mostly been arguing with people that can't seem to understand that this is a persistent online game/service and not a case of horribly intrusive anti-consumer DRM for no reason other than preventing piracy like Ubisoft puts out. It's not simple like flipping a switch to activate "single player offline" mode. They'd have to redesign the entire game.
But I did play the beta and I know what this launch is like because I've played MMOs before. It's pretty standard. People have really been overreacting.
Haahaha!Stop calling it MMO. It's not.
EA Shangaï said:I like to think of this game as an MMO. You can only play MMOs online so Im okay with this!
But really, why would "the cloud" be needed? Why can't the player's computer do that? I find it hard to believe that those things could be done more efficiently by computers on EA's end. I mean, what, do they have a better computer than each one the person is playing on (and one for everyone playing the game)? I would imagine the graphics are mostly being handled by the video card, leaving the CPUs free to do the calculations. It's not like it's doing something really complex, like physics...
I suspect it's just a phony justification
It's not even about the neighboring cities, it's just a fact that the engine is designed to have the underlying simulations handled by the cloud, which fucked up the launch since somehow they weren't prepared for the stress that would bring.
They can't just turn that off but I really really really don't think it'll be an issue going forward once the launch rush dies off.
Hah. I had just looked through his post history and that phrasing must've stuck subconciously.
GlassBox said:It's not just a case of DRM. The game is designed with core features of the simulation to be run on the cloud. It's a completely different beast than simple "Digital Rights".
And despite what a lot of uneducated people think. You can't just "flip a switch" and turn that functionality off like DRM
Thread title should be changed to show what went down. Something like "longtime ea shill caught in the act. (banned)". I dunno something creative. As it is its still rewarding EA for its plants. Both should be shamed as much as possible as the practice is despicable and attacks the very core of the forum.
Yes and why was it designed to be handled by the cloud?
Stop calling it MMO. It's not.
Reddit gets outraged over something stupid again I see.. what a shithole
There's nothing wrong with this kind of persistent online server stuff especially when it leads to MMO-like social features. Shit can barely even be called DRM. As long as I can keep my game forever and install/reinstall it on new PCs I'm happy.
You aren't going to be playing this anywhere that doesn't have an internet connection, ffs its almost 2013. If your connection drops it'll likely keep you in the spot you were at since thats how a persistent world works, hard saves are only if you want to reverse something that you fucked up etc. Nothing to bitch about here. GJ reddit for ruining what could have been a good place to converse with the devs about the game

Agreed as well. Not sure that technically was an EA shill though. Sounds more like a slightly overeager Maxis (possibly ex-)employee.Gotta agree, title needs a change.
I've yet to see a convincing argument that it is not. Although I believe piracy is not the only aspect of it; as in, I think EA expects added benefits.I just think it's way too cynical to think designing an engine that works this way is only an excuse/front for their anti-piracy scheme.
I've tried (here). Can't seem to get a clear cut answer. So please explain to me in simple words what the game exactly needs online and servers for (and I don't mean leaderboards and comparable things)? Especially when I am in my private Region!
Why am I able to play for 30minutes after I lost the connection?
Thread title should be changed to show what went down.
That's low, even for EA.
Pretending.
smh

The fact that you are able to play for 30 minutes after losing connection probably means that there actually is a switch for offline mode. Lol, what a shitshow.
GlassBox said:Remember they did build in safeguards so that the simulation could still function if a player was disconnected for a short period of time, but not for an extended period.
Well GlassBox had an answer to this!
Oh....ok.
Sounds like there is a switch somewhere that CAN be flipped!

I wonder if this is a phenomenon we'll see more of (or already do).
Marketing department gets account(s) on NeoGAF, hands it off to low-level employees to do enough posting to get member status and be active and then takes over when some 'messaging' is required.
I see some posts from people who speak marketing lingo and it always gets me to wondering.
Of course, naming the account GlassBox is sort of a dead giveaway!
I wish the "gaming press," such as it is, would pick up on that and investigate this shit. Or, you know, at least ask the right questions.Too bad the switch is a double on switch
No. At most, he works for him.Wait, onlyindreams is the CEO of EA?
I hate to be paranoid, but I notice it too. & it isn't just companies: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/georgemonbiot/2011/feb/23/need-to-protect-internet-from-astroturfing
HOT DIGGITY DAMN. I mean, I know he's a professional and all, but that kind of forces your admiration.he used 70 personas
If we could properly and accurately pull up the viral accounts, things would be much better on this site. Then I'd know there are actual, normal people having a discussion. I know those corporate defenders can't be real opinions. It's just ridiculous some people could be so willing to get crapped on regularly.
No. At most, he works for him.
Wait what?Astroturfers wreck things. It ruins the trust between posters. It's like those people that join the Mormon church just to push mutual funds and insurance.
That's low, even for EA.

Randy Pitchford, Findus, IKEA...If anything, Randy Pitchford must be happy as hell this debacle happened so people would forget about Aliens:Colonial Marines. Perhaps he should send EA a fruitbasket.
This gon b gud. I waited for 8 months to get my account approved. This is weird shit indeed.
I didn't lurk. Just stumbled upon the site and wanted to reply to something so I registered. Seemed like I was approved within days too. Didn't know it was such a big deal until reading posts like the one you replied to, lol.Approval time is partially based on chance. I waited less than a one-two days (I think, I lurked prior so I wasn't really impatient enough to notice), some people waited a week.
We welcome members of the video game industry posting anonymously on NeoGAF. Obviously, anything someone says on the internet attached to their name can have consequences. We welcome you posting openly, whether in an official capacity or otherwise. Or posting semi-openly, where some people may know who you are but your name's not coming up in Google with everything you say. All of that's fine.
What we don't welcome is this kind of behavior: attempting to distort the news aggregate by posting apologetic articles and accompanying them with an editorial slant favoring your company, all without actually disclosing to anyone here that you work for the company in question. It's akin to when Ken Lobb was pretending to be NeoGAF's biggest totally regular guy Xbox fan.
NeoGAF users can be pretty perceptive, as you've just found out.

I think you'd have to be comically naive not to see it that way.
The "cloud computing" is the bs people like Arthur Goose have tried to use to defend this bullshit. EA had to give their unofficial marketing reps something to cling to.
Serious question, since they say they can't simply take the online stuff out. Has Diablo 3 been pirated yet?

Apparently, partially at least. Hackers have to emulate what's meant to happen server-side. I don't know firsthand, was mentioned here.Serious question, since they say they can't simply take the online stuff out. Has Diablo 3 been pirated yet?
