The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

Tingle is the king! and grinding rupies for him was nothing I wouldn't endure for such a loving pulp of pimpness. nor was the sailing anything bad, it was very calming(the only thing that annoyed me was that I couldn't use the telescope-thingy WHILE sailing) and the warps where well placed.

no, the real problem was the fighting. having grown up on Capcom's fighting engines I am probably ruined for life. One thing I hated was how shitty the move-detection was. jabs, spins, whatever, the game doesn't care. and the lock-on have seen better days. but the most annoying thing ever is the fact that only link can hit walls.

oh, here is the tightest corridor ever and it's filled to the brim with spear-weilding pig-faces. but oh wait, I think I'll do some stun animations here because this pig-fuck is standing next to a wall... yes, and let's have this piggy do a wide sweep as I am stunned, making his spear pass through both fucking walls in the same attack... yes, I'm having tons of fun now...

Really?

I found the fighting in Wind Waker extremely enjoyable and the controls for it were spot on. Enemies were too easy yes, and I wish they lasted longer because I loved the 'Flashing A Attack', and the sparks/shiny crap were lovely too. I really enjoyed the WW and the temples were nicer than OoT.

Hmm, picking up enemies huge spears were fun but yeh collision detecting on walls, would have looked very odd though.

Great post GDJ. I felt compelled to check this after randomly starting my clear game today. Very well-written and genuinely heart-felt! The fact I share your sentiments pretty much word for word is just an added bonus =)

I just hope TP can live up to the expectations and deliver that same magic.

It is the only Zelda game I never completed. I really got bored and tired of sailing around. I still have the game and save so I will complete it when I get a Wii.

Post-TP bump!

After playing through (most of) TP... and then re-reading this topic, I have to say... man, I dunno... I really, really like Wind Waker.

Never in a thousand years did I think that TP would not top it in my eyes but... here we are. I know if you were to go down the list and add up secrets, minigames, innovations... TP would probably sweep WW across the board but man... Wind Waker just seems to have intangible qualities I don't think I'll ever be able to effectively verbalize.

One thing is for certain - there is absolutely no denying that Wind Waker's soundtrack was absolutely amazing:

Title Screen:

DragonRoost Island:

Sailing:

Wind Waker's sailing theme is a goddamn landmark and greater than all other Zelda overworld themes.

I definitely think TP is better, but TWW has its own superior qualities that are quantifiable and sound. I think camera control, art style, story and fluidity/animation are definitely areas that TP can learn and hopefully, for the next iteration, advance.

OoT (9.0), TWW (9.3), TP (9.5)

Putting a Zelda game in a post-apocalyptic flooded world environment is something sort of tough to top. I really wish Phantom Hourglass was on Wii.

Wind Waker will always have a special place in my heart.

It's also the only Zelda game I've ever finished on a 5-day rental
:lol

But damn TP is a great game. We'll see how it ages with time.

I like the world/characters/story/style/graphics/music of WW the best of any Zelda games including TP.

But TP rapes it on dungeons, length, battles.

Best thing would be a game that plays as well as TP that has the feel of WW.

I guess I basically feel that TP is "better," but I like Wind Waker more. :)

Objectively I know that TP is the better product, but better/worse doesn't factor into sailing around that beautiful world. Does not compute.

TP is the first zelda game ive played. Put WW on my xmas list, by then should be done with TP. For 20 bucks cant go wrong. What is the general consensus on this game when compared to TP?

Wind Waker is an amazing but flawed game, IMHO, whereas Twilight Princess is masterful on almost every level.

Nevertheless, the art style and atmosphere are both fantastic and I hope Nintendo goes back to that style for at least one more console Zelda.

Also, I always thought the WW music was great and never understood the hate it received. The ending theme is sublime.

I believe it's Q1 07 for VC, but don't quote me on that.

Aside from the mind-numbingly bad Triforce collection bit, the game was stunningly executed.

OOT experience is beneficial for WW, but it's far, far from necessary. Don't stress about it. You need to be a zelda scholar to recognize half the connections anyway.

Sound? Er...have to disagree. While it's the same low quality synth, the compositions are far better in TP.

WW is still visually, my favourite post-16bit game, I think the art style is inspired.

I remember seeing the backlash and negative comments about it, and I couldn't comprehend at all where they were coming from, this was THE 3D game that justified 3D to 2D gamers as far as I was concerned.... Now I never played the N64 Zelda's so, I think a lot of the backlash was the expectation that there would be a continuation of that style on a high-spec. machine, which is what TP is pretty much.

Oh, and about the graphics, TP was only held back because it was on GC level hardward. You can't make a game in the scope of TP with that type of graphics without making some sacrifices. TP on 360/PS3 level hardware wouldn't have any problems.

TP just annihilates WW on every level. Characters, story, dungeons, controls, items, bosses (both are weak, but TPs are fun), even art design (could have been different if WW Link didn't look like absolute shit..). Granted, TP makes a joke of every Zelda save perhaps LTTP and MM (which still aren't as good), but still.

Now after TP, WW is just the bastard child of the series that wasn't supposed to exist.
Legend of Zelda <=> Ocarina of Time
Link to the Past <=> Twilight Princess

Keep the WW art style alive on future handhelds, though. The environments themselves were very pretty. Design might even be better than TP's if it were without a shitastic Link model.

Wind Waker 2 on the Game Boy Cubed please. Get the formula right this time.

I haven't seen the ending to TP yet but WW has the best ending of all video games I've ever played. Not to mention I absolutely loved this game as well. Was a bit skimpy on the dungeons though. =_(

..... dammit GAF, stop making me want to put down TP and start WW ....... i'm already uninspired enough at how traditional TP is
accept for dungeon 5, that was creative

oh man GDJustin - thanks for those - WW's music had such culture in it ----- 35 hours in, and no music has had me whistling in TP yet .... :[

ghst

thanks for the laugh
Anything TP story related..SPOILER TAG IT. I wish this could be enforced by mods, right now its kinda a big deal for me.

Nah I don't like this Zelda all that much. Zelda games always put emphasis on free exploration, and that's kinda killed when you have to play a song every goddamn time you want to change directions when sailing. It's like having to play Epona's song every time when you wanted to change directions on horseback. The artstyle was great and all, but the game itself not so much.

This game, while not my favorite Zelda game, is a masterpiece.

I loved the art style. It just gave that game a sense of wonder that you don't find in most games. In tone and feel, I think it's the most faithful to the original game. The sense of exploration and "let's go see what's out there" was the greatest since the original.

I also loved the characters. Ganondorf wasn't a stereotypical villian in this game. He was more refined, and even had some good reasons for his villany. A definite improvement over past games. Zelda was the best version of her character as well.

WW had it's flaws. Far too short, and easy (I died maybe once on my first playthrough). However it is such an incredible EXPERIENCE, that whatever flaws it has should be overlooked. If you're a gamer, if you believe in the art of videogames, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

I'm sure this has been said, but TWW was really a huge missed opportunity.

I mean, it was an empty, BORING ocean. If they had more islands with more stuff to do and explore it could have been one those unforgettable games. Instead it was too easy, and sailing was boring, and it had that god awful fetch quest.

I put TWW down with Four Swords. I was even worried about the Zelda series for a while. Twilight Princess saved it. It is such an awesome, awesome game.

My feelings exactly. Wind Waker has to be the worst Zelda game following Four Swords. I've only gotten past the first dungeon in TP, but even so, the game has already surpassed Wind Waker in just about every aspect, and there is still over 40 hours of playtime left.

don't kill me...

I hated the art style so i didn't bother playing the game. last Zelda i played was on SNES !!!

BUT i heard so many good things about Wind Waker.

All I have to say my friend is dear god, TP keeps getting better and better and better and better and better and better *breathes* and better! Other than the deku leaf, I don't remember any cool weapons or upgrades in TWW. TP has so many awesome, ingenious weapons, and I'm only on the fifth dungeon!

I don't really get how everyone complains that WW was too easy when I don't really notice the difficulty in any 3d Zelda. I mean in TP once you get more than 3 hearts you don't die either unless you play like an idiot.

All 3d Zelda games are like this:

-Find enemy weakness
-Hit it
-Slash the open spot
-Repeat

The hard part is the BRAINS, aka. figuring out where the weak point is. The actual execution of battles has never been particularly difficult in OoT/MM/WW/TP. What's hard are the puzzles (which I thought were fine in WW), not the action. Plus when you do die in a Zelda 3d game you just start outside the room you were just in, how is that hard?

I dunno, it bugs me when everyone bitches about WW or Okami's low difficulty. Sure TP is a little tougher because you take more damage, but IMO the enemies aren't more aggresive or anything.

Well in general there are just MORE enemies. The fighting in TWW felt really tight and fun, and TP adds on that with wii controls and lets you fight A LOT. Ya, I havn't died much in TP either, but the puzzles do have an added layer of complexity, as do the fights.

I loved Wind Waker. More so than Ocarina of Time actually. The freedom of the sea, the classic Zelda charm, the beautiful graphics...Whether you like the style or not is up to you, but you can't deny that the game definitely had some jaw droppingly beautiful moments.

Ya, I'm not going to lie, when I was at the second dungeon I had a really warm and fuzzy feeling in my heart and I felt that it was going to be my favorite game ever. It was a warm and fuzzy feeling almost missed from TP, just because of TWW's visuals.

Then I realized after you visit the second dungeon, you've seen all of the major islands in the game and the rest are just dungeon doors, or stupid little islands with holes. Not even more towns. Nadda. Nothing.

wow.. wii agree on something.

yes, OoT is my least favorite of the three. Both WW and TP had a level of charm that I just don't think EAD could accomplish on the N64 (even though it was definitely very charming when first released). WW and TP are the pinnacle of the 3D series though IMHO, with TP just barely winning out.

I would LOVE to see a director's cut WW.. seriously though. For Wii. Make it happen EAD.. I would pay $50 all over again despite being able to play the original on the system.

Kodiak

Not an asshole.
this thread makes me wish I still had this game...

its twenty bucks now, no?

I think I'll pick it up after I finish TP, it will fill the gap between that and Phantom Hourglass nicely.

(Zelda is the best video game franchise period.)

While not as good as Ocarina of time , for me at least. I have to say that Wind Waker, is one of my favorite, but again im a Zelda fanboy, so they are all up there.

But Wind Waker style, the art, the music, the animation, it felt really good, it is beautifull, a masterpiece. It also has aged very well, and will continue so.

I havent played Twlight princess yet, since its not out here yet. But from what i have read, i have NO DOUBT that i will be stunned when i get on title screen, and start playing. Just like every Zelda.
