Did some reading today on Kim Jong-nam, Jong-il's oldest son and original heir.

Apparently he fled his home in Macau last year because he was afraid that Jong-un was plotting to have him assassinated.

And a North Korean agent confessed to being part of a planned attack on him in 2010.

Crazy stuff. I'm sure this was probably discussed on GAF at some point, but it was mostly new to me.

Sounds like just a case of sibling rivalry to me! Clearly, the West is just making shit up now because they fear the Un-meister.

It isn't that shocking as their family only knows one thing and that's pure evil.

It would be one of history's greatest ironies if Dennis Rodman, of all people, ended up being a major agent in bringing about the dawn of a new era of worldwide peace.

The Hoff Disappointed That His Role in Ending The Cold War was Overlooked

I would take this with a grain of salt, the report comes from an "informed" anonymous source, and also that paper is a product of colder times. It is possible but comes-off as unsubstantiated fear-mongering from the Russian Press. There appears to be somewhat of a media-blackout from the West reporting this; that is surprising considering the AP has a group in Pyongyang that has been silent since the DPRK domain went down. If it were outside attackers, DPRK would be more than happy to allow the western reporters to cover this story (there are still lines of communication open).

The blackout fits within the DPRK's modus operandi as a means to escalate the menacing appearance; its a kind of wild card to play: increase the level of caution, causing hesitation among outsiders, in order to find an opening or force a move from US/ROK. This seems to fit better with tendencies of that regime. If something happens in the next 96 hrs, it will be Friday/Saturday night, in accordance with the lull in the news cycle.

DPRK is holding drills of their own, and it turns out they are running into basic problems like a lack of driver-training; fuel is severely rationed and there are not enough competent drivers to maintain the logistics of a massive war effort. In the past 48hrs, DPRK has flown over 700 sorties -burning a hell of a lot of fuel that they don't have much of.

I'm in the camp that believes this was self-imposed by DPRK, and is little more than their hostile gamesmanship. News-junkies are certainly groping for a fix but the lack of coverage suggests that the western media is is not going to provide free DPRK fear dissemination.
I thought about this too. If true, pretty clever as it seems to have worked perfectly.

I think this is new to GAF. Interesting.

Was anyone a little worried when that U.S. official said that he was "very concerned" about North Korea's rhetoric?

Before then, I figured that the U.S. considered North Korea as someone that's just barking in the dark.

No, I'm not. I wish they would come out and say, "They are all bark and no bite." and call their bluffs. Make them look like the idiots they are.

Nah. The US has to pretend it's a legitimate threat in case we decide to use their words as justification to pre-emptively strike, assassinate, send poison cookies, etc.

In Latest Insult, North Korea Targets South Korean Leader’s Dress

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/14/world/asia/north-korea-targets-leaders-dress.html?_r=0

“This frenzy kicked up by the South Korean warmongers is in no way irrelevant, with the venomous swish of skirt made by the one who again occupies” the presidential Blue House, the North’s Ministry of the People’s Armed Forces said in a statement, referring to Ms. Park. She returned to the residence as president on Feb. 25, about 33 years after her father, the former President Park Chung-hee, was assassinated.

It's hard to know really. Some of the sites were working for a while today, but its all offline again now. The Tass report has a Pyongyang dateline, so it sounds like it's coming from a correspondent there. But surely if the state was telling the Russian press that some foreign entity was attacking their servers then they would also be openly protesting and blaming Seoul for it?

I've seen some speculation on twitter that it could be due to moving the servers to a more secure area. There were reports a few days ago about some communications elements being moved underground. Other speculation that those rare computer resources could be getting commandeered for other uses.

If they have flown that many sorties then that likely represents more airtime for their pilots in the past few days than they would likely have had for the past ten years.

(Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un supervised a live artillery drill close to a disputed sea border with South Korea, state news agency KCNA reported on Thursday, in the latest sign of increased tensions between the two Koreas.

KCNA did not specify when the drill took place. The border is seen as the most likely site of any clash between the North, which has stepped up military preparations in response to being sanctioned for its February nuclear test, and South Korea.

North Korea has threatened a nuclear war with the United States in response to new United Nations sanctions and to strike back at South Korea and the United States during military drills that the two allies are holding.

Kim praised the artillery units on two islands after watching them hit targets, in what KCNA described as the "biggest hotspots in the southwestern sector of the front", in practice for striking at two South Korean islands.

North Korea fires two short range missiles into the sea of Japan

SEOUL, March 15 (Yonhap) -- North Korea fired off short-range missiles into the East Sea on Friday amid heightened tension following its February nuclear test, a military source in Seoul said.

"A North Korean military unit on drill test-fired two shots of short-range missiles, presumed to be KN-02 missiles, into the East Sea" the source said.

No need to worry West Coast.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration has decided to add 14 interceptors on the West Coast to the U.S.-based missile defense system.

Defense officials confirm the move, saying it's in response to recent threats from North Korea to attack the U.S. with nuclear weapons. U.S. officials believe North Korea is incapable of carrying out an attack, but the threat adds to tension between the two countries.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel plans to announce the decision later Friday. It was first reported by Fox News.

The officials confirmed the decision on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

Adding the interceptors to the 30 already in place in California and Alaska will beef up the ability to shoot down missiles in flight. The defense system has existed since 2004.
