DuckTales Remasted Announced (Capcom/Wayforward, $15, XBLA/PS3/WiiU/PC)

As happy as I am this seems so random. It's literally been over 2 decades since the last show. P.S. the last show was in November of 1990 (man I feel old!). Wonder what made them pick this.

We don't need to completely rework classic games in the sake of making them more modern, and exploring an old cartoon town from the 80's not only wouldn't add anything, it would inevitably be just a distraction and a time sink from any real gameplay.

Keep classic games in classic styles, we've got plenty of newer games if we want an open world sandbox.

What?

I mean if the game did well so they'd bring out an all new 3D open world game based on Duckberg. I don't know how you inferred from my comment that I'd somehow expect them to add it in this game.

Would be cool and all, but no company would make that gamble and give it a high enough budget to make it really good. If this sells well its more realistic to hope for a 2D sequel.

Probably asked and answered, but does this allow the possibility that the original game would be included in this, or perhaps released elsewhere (virtual console) so I can legally play it again?

Nonetheless, I am giddy as ever about this news and a possible Rescue Rangers remaster.

Tears of joy here. Tears of joy. I still remember renting the NES game. Very fun game. I was also a big fan of the cartoon series back then. The Disney afternoon Season 2.. Ah, great memories.

I'm I the only weirdo that wished this stayed completely 2D and looked like it was developed for one of their top end 2D arcade machines?

Absolutely not, in fact i think the games looks ugly and cheap because of all the 3d scenario, the only things in 2d are characters which at best are 3-4 sprites at the same times on screen.

I'd say it's a definite possibility. I mean, they've already worked out all the licensing, obviously.

Pretty please.
The music was so amazing.

Maui Mallard is actually the easiest thing that Disney could bring over, as the game was developed by Disney themselves and not something by Capcom or Sega.

Unfortunately, from the HG101 article which actually has some Cold Shadow 2 prototype media:

Maui Mallard 2 Designs

In Valladolid's interview with artist Oliver Wade, several designs are shown of what would be Maui Mallard 2. The story, game design documents and character designs were all done due to the amount of work that was put into the supposed launch of Maui Mallard media, but once the first game failed to gain any sort of success or recognition, the game and anything related to Mallard was quietly cancelled. The interview can be found here.

So it basically didn't even do well at the time.

Yeah, it didn't do well.

They probably should have just called it 'Donald Duck in Cold Shadow'. It also didn't help that it was a really late release.

I kinda wanted Disney to find the scrapped 4 player Ducktales arcade game. I know it's in the Disney vault you fuckers! RELEASE THE CODE.

Ducktales was one of my favorite NES games and TV shows as a kid, but I really hate when 8/16-bit games are "remastered" to look like flash games. Super Mario All-Stars and the FF GBA/PSP games is how 8-bit games should be updated imho.

If it only existed in unreleased code form some 2 decades ago, I wouldn't get your hopes up that it exists in any form today. The only hope is if in Sega style Disney (or whoever) cleans out an old unused storage room and happens upon disks with the source code on it.

yeah I don't like the look either, I would love if they make it look more like the cartoon.

I'm not sure how well it did in Europe where it was actually called that (almost at least: "Donald in Maui Mallard"), but from the same article:
In a move that proved fatal to the potential success of the game, the decision was made by Disney to remove all mentions of Donald Duck in both ads, in game product and the manual and change the name into Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow. This was done for two reasons. Disney was rather nervous of the reaction of many watchdog groups in America of seeing Donald handle a gun and starring in a game which has such a distinctly different tone than anything he has been in before. Disney also felt that Donald's image had lost some steam with the young crowd at the time.
In hindsight it was probably a stupid decision. Also, I only just found out the game never came out for Genesis in the US.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I was expecting to see some bland HD 2D art...

...That would have been better than this, thing.

Isn't WF known for their 2D games? Why do it?

Honestly didn't even know it was a Disney game or that that was Donald until just now. All these years I thought it was a new mascot platformer by some unknown company in an era swarming in them. Ducks were big back then so I assumed it was a shameless attempt to get in on that by crapping out another duck character. I completely ignored it as a result. Well... that and I don't recall much of a marketing push. Like none at all.

That hardcore gaming 101 article really makes me want to play "Donald Duck no Mahou no Boushi". Wow, that games looks like loads of fun. Also, love that boxart. Needs to be in my Super Famicom collection.

It is too bad that Maui Mallard/Cold Shadow didn't do better. It was certainly a pretty well advertised game and certainly had quality put into it. Well, you can't blame me of not buying a copy. I bought and played the heck out of this game when I was a kid.

Same. Unfortunately no internet at the time to set us straight. Didn't even cross my mind as a kid that that could be Donald.

Also, seeing some of these comics posted here really makes me want to read some Donald comics. Is there a Disney comic app or anything out?

Wow... Seeing these comics again after all those years brings back a shitload of memories...
Does anyone remember the "Mickey Mouse and the Sword of Ice" trilogy?

ZrBWXMx.jpg

It was my personal "Lord of the rings" when I was growing up. I used to read it religiously up until I was like 12 years old and then I somehow lost my copy.

God, this game was so weird. It made me so confused as a kid about whether it was Donald Duck or not but I loved it. Great game feel and such an absorbing atmosphere. I want to try get a hold of the PC version after finding out that the music was rearranged.

Listening to more iterations of The Moon right now. This guitar arrangement is fucking amazing. I'm so hyped for this.

I just noticed that I read my ducktales stories so much that I still know exactly what happened in that story just by seeing those last 2 panels.

Wow.

I remember that one as well. I've got a shelf with approximately 200 of the pocket books in the next room and several hundred issues of the weekly magazine in the basement.
I was actually thinking about making a thread about them. More specifically, a collection of all stories which are parodies or adaptions of popular or classic stories, for instance 1984 ("2084", starring the "Big Uncle"), The Lord of the Rings or The Matrix. It happened several times to me that I starting reading some classic book and immediately remembered having read a Disney version of it as a child.

Letting the player swim in money is questionable after the financial crisis...or maybe its just another form of power fantasy.

Ever since I was a kid I wanted to dive into Scrooge's money pool. Fuck reality, swimming in coins sounds freakin' awesome.

Also OT Subtitle idea: |OT| Play smarter, not harder

I actually only played the original for a few minutes on a shopping mall as a kid, never owned it. The fact that I still remember that is probably indicative of how much I liked what I played.

I did, however, watch a few episodes of the cartoon and I loved the Indiana Jones-like atmosphere, especially BEFORE all the action, during the "research and investigate" parts. It had very atmospheric music.

Holy crap at the guy playing, it takes skill to suck that bad. :S Did they use Bob from accounting to show the game?

It's really awesome that they added new attacks to bosses, and in fact the new attacks looks so... classic, in a word. Appropriate. They look at home at a lake NES or early SNES game.
