New 3DS update out

It black screened while updating, said "an error has occurred," told me to restart the system, and now that I did trying to pull up the settings screen or the eshop gives me "an error has occurred. please save your data in any software currently in use, then restart the system." restarting, removing the SD card, etc. seems to result in the same thing.

Screwed?

My nephew just sent me this.

I hope there's a "casual" fix for this error bug for people who aren't looking online for solutions. It seems to affect quite a few people.

Was able to fix it for my niece and nephew who are both under 10 years old but if they didn't have me?

Sorry for not being clear, when I started the update it resulted in the same condition as your 3DS. I assumed the 3DS thought the system was corrupted, but after doing the LRA-UP trick it found out the system was fine, saying I'm already updated --the update was successful but something triggered an alert in the system or something. Did it turn out okay after you did the trick though?

Well, my system doesn't crash when I bring up the LRA-UP update menu, but it also doesn't detect any of my access points, so I can't perform a system update. I've tried across 3 different secure networks, and still no dice. I'm afraid I'll have to send it in.

What country are you in? 3DS' will automatically connect at some unsecured access points. Try temporarily turning off the security on your router and temporarily renaming your SSID 'attwifi' -- it should connect.

This is also how you can access NintendoZone at home. Failing that, go somewhere you know will have AT&T wifi or game-shop WiFi before you resort to sending it in. Perhaps there is a button shortcut for accessing the internet settings menu too?

When I bring up the update menu via LRA-UP, and I attempt to update, I'm given a communication error. Then, I'm asked if I want to configure internet settings, and I'm taken to the internet settings menu (the typical one in from the regular settings menu accessed via the home screen). And even trying all those fixes (changing security to open, renaming SSID to "attwifi"), my 3DS still won't detect any access points. I'm afraid something with the wireless adapter has gone funny. I'll try at a couple more locations just to make sure.

Thanks for the help and suggestions though folks.

I take it you've tried flicking the wireless switch.... If I overload my Thompson router with too much traffic, or maybe if there's too much interference (lots of neighbour WiFi around me, and I have multiple wireless bridges and repeaters in use) -- I don't know why it happens, but sometimes my 360 and 3DS stop seeing my SSID being broadcast. Try manual configuration, or reboot your router and search for your WiFi then. Hope its nothing too serious for you!

WTF? Why can't you migrate saves from the digital copy to the physical copy? That is dumb as hell, Nintendo.

Also: what error are you guys talking about?

Call me nuts if you want, but I am 100% certain that this update sped some stuff up. One area I definitely see it is in puzzle swap. When you use the "Get a piece" feature and hold down R to speed things up, the slight laggyness is gone. Anyone agree? Try to spend some coins and get several pieces in a row (if you still can, a new puzzle just came out so should be easy to test)

Why would you need to? Presumably it's for people who want the convenience of digital who also bought a physical copy before the downloadable version was available.

Why would you go from digital back to physical...?

If you want to play the game on a different 3DS, for one thing! :(

I don't understand here. If you're transferring to a new 3DS, you'd have the digital copy anyway?

But if you can't migrate your save back and forth, and you start playing the digital copy, you're pretty much locked down to that system, right? Now I'm starting to think I'm misunderstanding something. :lol

What if you borrowed a game from a friend or rented one? Wouldn't it be nice to keep your save if you purchase the game later? Back the save up to the system and restore it to the game? I've traded a few games in which I would like to revisit someday, and it would be really nice to be able to continue where i left off.

It could have all been fixed by having the save be on the external system memory/SD card in the first place. It's not like the Vita where memory cards are super expensive.

I've said this or some form of it(usually with the words "I wish," and/or "but it's Nintendo, so I'm not surprised") dozens, if not hundreds, of times since the 3DS launched.

Man, I'm bummed that I can't move my save data from SD to Cartridge.. I was thinking about buying a Fire Emblem cart (I have it on digital) but I guess that'd be pretty pointless now...

I updated my three systems without issues. Two of them had the update downloaded and asked me to install it when I opened them, the third told me to update when I tried to enter the eShop.

How often do games get patched anyway? All I can think of is Mario Kart 7 online 1.1.

From what I see, the following bits of "update data" can be downloaded from the Japanese eShop:

  • Animal Crossing (1.1)
  • Oshare de Kawaii! Koinu to Asobo! Machi-Hen (1.1)
  • Inazuma Eleven Go 2: Chrono Stone Neppuu (1.2)
  • Inazuma Eleven Go 2: Chrono Stone Raimei (1.2)
  • Style Savvy (1.1)
  • Fantasy Life (1.2)
  • Nicola Kanshuu: Model Oshare Audition Platina (1.1)
  • Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney (1.1)
  • Medarot 7: Kabuto Ver. (1.1)
  • Medarot 7: Kuwagata Ver. (1.1)
  • Dr Kawashima's Devilish Brain Training (1.1)
  • Sengoku Musou Chronicle 2nd (1.1)
  • G1 Grand Prix (1.1)
  • Tantei Jinguuji Saburo: Fukushuu no Rinbu (1.1)
  • Penguin no Mondai: The Wars (1.1)
  • Culdcept (1.1)
  • New Love Plus (1.2)
  • Flora and Fauna 3D Field Guide (1.1)
  • Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D (1.1)
  • Danball Senki Baku Boost (1.2)
  • Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater (1.1)
  • Dynasty Warriors VS (1.1)
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (1.1)
  • Mario Kart 7 (1.1)
...that's way more than I expected! The European eShop probably has less. Let's see:

  • Style Savvy (1.1)
  • Mario Kart 7 (1.1)
If anybody wants to check the US eShop, I found these by limiting the price range to "Free - 0".

Do these updates apply only to eShop titles? Or the actually retail copies?

Nintendo probably learned from the Wii. Imagine someone tinkers with the saves on SD, you copy it back and some 3rd party games starts to act wonky --> BOOM 3DS homebrew. That's why they lock that stuff down I guess.

I'm pretty sure they are just for retail titles. They are just like the Mario Kart 7 fix. From my experience, for eShop titles you get updates listed in the update list and a notification window when entering the eShop, instead of having to download them like a separate title.

Whew. Just finished the update finally. I got the error. I was scouring google for like an hour and couldn't find anything on how to fix it until I found Daedardus' post.

Worked like a charm. Now I'm downloading Star Fox from the XL promo.

Does anyone think there will be a new 3ds at e3 or is it safe to buy an xl right now

Hmm, you missed a great deal at Target last week (XL for $160 (assuming you're in America)). But anyway I'd say it's worth it, especially with the free game promotion going on (ends on the 20th), but if you can easily wait I suppose it wouldn't hurt to hold off until E3.

Since the update the 3ds has been significantly quicker. Probably just OS optimisations, rather than suddenly finding more hardware capability.

Really wish I had see this thread a few days back. I got me a 3dsXL, and two days after I updated it, I got the "error has occured, please power down" thing whenever I had my wifi switch on! (if I turned it off? No issues!) Nintendo is fixing it as of this Tuesday, but damn.. missing MonHun!!!

Still saving the trick, in case it happens another time, with my brother's or sister's systems.

wait, what?! that was the exact same issue I've had! that was due to the update? dude, I even made a thread about it.
Thanks Obama!

I'm waiting for my XL the return from Nintendo.

man, i would have got a heart attack if that happened to my 3DS with the video capture mod.

now i'm thinking about never updating that system.

damn, that sounds too advanced for Nintendo. LOL

but you're right, overall, the system feels faster.

It is definitely faster. Yesterday I started going through my Streetpass Plaza to delete those non-streetpass Miis who invaded my plaza from Mario Kart and Kid Icarus, and it is a lot faster scrolling through the hordes of recent Miis.

Still too slow to quickly change stuff in the plaza, like deleting unwanted Miis though. I wish they add an option in the future.

The strange thing was... I updated, an hour later, transferred all my launch 3ds stuff to the system, no issues, and even downloaded the new MonHun stuff, Then, next day? Nothing, black screens when I closed the system, and errors when I left wi-fi on. Bah, no worries now, I suppose

Hey, SpotPass content is now downloaded truly in background, even if you're playing a game. Before you had to put the 3DS in sleep mode, but I received SwapNote letters, Nintendo Video videos and Fire Emblem bonus box stuff while using other games. I got notifications even while browsng the eShop.

This is great news for those who always shut down their 3DSes and never let them sleep: you won't miss spotPass anymore.
