Wii U UK Sales Rose Almost 125% Last Week

Nintendo have been testing price points since launch given the tepid response to the current ones.

An administrator wouldn't take a loss like this (£100 per unit based on current trade prices), it would go against everything they stand for. They are there to salvage a businesses, not drive it further into the red.

I was under the impression they had already started having them.

Hmm, the last trade prices I saw (Jan) had the premium ~£240 so even including Zombi U £100 is a bit of a stretch.

I know a few friends who got a Wii U last week, myself included.

Great little system... it just needs games!

The deal just came out of nowhere and took me by surprise, I just had to get it.

So now an increase of 125% is bad? Yes, previous sales were terrible and it needs to keep increasing at a steady pace, but still ...

The administrator is said to have a deal in place with Hilco, so the inventory value is worth more to the creditors.
doesnt look like the deals there yet, so Deloitte will still need to be making it an attractive profile, then half the stores closing as well is a fair bit of stock clearout. ive got no real idea on retail channel workings, or know anything about this stock borrowing, so cant comment on that.

The Sun report says that a deal has to be struck by the end of March, when HMV faces a quarterly rent bill.

The reason a percentage is being reported is because the tracking service does not provide console numbers on a weekly or even monthly basis. EU Numbers are not like Japan

my local hmv was down for closure soon, but was in their yesterday and all the closing down sale posters have been removed and the staff were confident it was surviving

Ya, I can confirm the source - it's on the front page of the 29/03 issue - very brief, pretty much as OP says - down to HMV and Monster Hunter 3 Ut launch:

The overall sales are probably painfully low still, but an increase is still a good thing™. With more+better software and price cuts in other territories, Nintendo can start to climb out of the hole they dug for themselves.

Nintendo needs to realize that if they want to sell systems, they NEED to take big loses on hardware.

Trying to sell the system at cost is a joke when companies like MS and Sony are taking 100-200 dollar loses per unit.

Ummm... that isn't the problem here.

Software sells hardware. I'm not surprised. It was a only temporary boost, but for a very short time after the MH3 preorders began, Wii U managed to break the Amazon.de Top 20. In fact, when I ordered my copy back in January, it was number one. No huge price cut or anything, just a game release people are interested in. That's what Nintendo needs.

so hypothetically, considering the sale being in effect for the full week this week, and apparently lego releasing, and if HMV still has stock to sell, we could see perhaps another similar increase, maybe even more so?

You know it's bad when Vita has had more recent game announcements :lol

You're talking about the indie stuff? Or did some non-indie Vita games get announced when I wasn't looking? Wii U gets indie games announced too every day but for some reason they don't get talked much here.

HMV has 116 stores left, working on the assumption each store had a few dozen and sold them all.. they're probably the reason for this temporary blip.

A friend of mine tired to get one and was told that they hadn't had any in stock for months and neither did any of the other stores in the area as they were just getting rid of old stock. The central London store reportedly had about 200 units. I'm sure there were some elsewhere but they were scarce.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
a £130 price drop shifts units to fence sitters scared this may be "as good as it gets". Who knew.

Lets not pretend 5k sales of MH3U contributed to some seismic shift in WiiU fortunes though.

I'd say 3k per week is a fair guess at hardware sales before this bump, we know it did 25k software in February so that's about 6k a week, absolutely no new games were released in Feb and the install base is tiny so can't imagine their would have been many random software purchases, so I'd imagine hardware sales were around half the level of software (consistent with launch attach rate of about 2, all figures include bundles), so about 3k hardware assuming it stayed consistent into march, so about 7k with this bump

Man people are harsh in this thread :p

I hope this helps boost sales over the next few weeks at least. Every little bit I would think helps, right?

Why sell consoles at a loss when you can have retailers take the loss for you? Sucks for HMV to have so much excess stock though.

I wonder if Nintendo could sell consoles to retailers at a discount for a limited time without an official price drop. Basically lower the price to help retailer profit margins until a few more games come out.

Because retailers won't buy new stock. And if you lose shelf space it is hard to gain it back.

Over here in the UK, I went to two big supermarkets tonight, neither had the Wii U stocked at all. There was no sign that the thing even exists. Before Christmas there was a couple of shelves selling the things but they have obviously given up and pulled it completely. Wow. Nintendo have fallen flat on their faces here with this machine, relying FAR too heavily on the brand power of the Wii alone to sell the console instead of good old fashioned marketing.

Its apparently Nintendo taking the loss here and hmv doesn't own the stock anyway

So YOU know the numbers. Care to share ?
Did you not notice the word "if" at the start of the post you quoted?

If you've been following PAL charts threads then you'll be able to make a pretty good estimation of sales from the various sales numbers posted by people with data. The console is unlikely to be selling much more than a couple of thousand per week, if that.

So apparently good news is no news?

Might as well call NeoGAF "ShitalloverWiiUGAF" since that's what it's become. For all it's faults and even lower sales, Vita was never treated this poorly.

Also, ENOUGH WITH THE "NO GAMES" BULLSHIT! I guess strong system sellers like NSMBU, ZombiU, Nintendoland, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Lego City aren't games. Not to mention several strong ports including the console superior NFS Most Wanted U. Go check what the PS2 had in it's shitty "launch window" and you'll wonder how the hell it became so huge (outside of being the cheapest DVD player.) Some newer systems take time to find their footing. Like the 3DS did.

Look, normally I ignore this stuff because there is a lot of truth to it. Nintendo is charging too much for this system and it's sales are hurting as a cause and making publishers shy away. I know that. But the constant attacks on the system in ANY thread it gets mentioned in is getting to be a bit much. It really is a great system and I love the Miiverse. Just not at the current price.

So criticism, yes. Out and out attacks in every thread the system is mentioned? No. Cut down on the cynicism already. It's getting out of hand. It's hard. I know. But having a more positive outlook on things is much better than being negative all the time.

It's never been rolled out fully - The majority of Asda & Tesco stores I've been in didn't stock it at launch, and never have.
