DayZ creator: Sony interested in PS4 DayZ port

Hmm, well me getting a PC version is pretty much confirmed since a lot of my PC buddies have been planning grouping up once it comes out.

Great news if it gets on PS4 though since there are plenty of console only players out there who should experience it. I might even double dip when I get a PS4.

I'd double dip in a heartbeat just for the big-screen, 5.1 surround, comfy couch experience.

I think Sony should really lock this one up. DayZ is by all accounts still a niche mod for a inpenetrable milsim on PC. Getting it on a console like the PS4 could bring sooo many new people to the franchise.

it's niche beacause it's a mod. Just see when the standalone comes out on pc, how niche it will be...

Do a Vita version too (or remote play).

Hell yeah. I'll be there Day Z on PS4 version.

Have you played DayZ? It's still rather impenetrable just by the fact it runs on the Arma II framework, which by all accounts, is janky and convoluted. I hope the standalone version on PC tackles more of those problems than they have shown in the videoblogs so far.
I believe a well-designed control scheme for controllers would do a lot to alleviate those issues.

Forgive my ignorance but isn't the next Xbox kinda similar in architecture to ps4 meaning they will share lots of ports and games?

"Certainly I think if we don't, for want of a better word 'fuck up,' the PC release then I would say a console port is almost certain."

And not a single fuck about political correctness was given that day. Gotta love Kiwis.

I guess this would mean no server-side customization and mods, but that's actually appealing to me. It'd be nice to be able to play a completely "standardized" version of the game.

Yes I played it a lot and yes it isn't userfriendly. I dont know how much the standalone will fix this, but I do know that a lot of people is waiting for it.
A console version, would definitely need a complete redo of the command interface as long as less stiff movements and animations from your character.

So what? Architecture and porting is not the point of this thread. The topic is that Sony have expressed interest and that's a good thing. Microsoft have not extended the same gesture (or one that we don't know of yet). Nonetheless whether DayZ will reach consoles will depend very much on the success of the PC standalone.

F2P + PS4 (console) exclusive. Sony just might have their Minecraft for the gen.

DayZ would be great for Sony, but its no Minecraft. Next gen Minecraft will be Minecraft.

If Sony or MS could turn up to E3 and say they have a next gen exclusive version of minecraft it would be massive.

Well the PS4 has certainly got the horsepower to run it, which is no mean feat, given what a resource hog the ARMA Gfx engine is, 8 cores & 8GB of ram will be a perfect match.

DayZ..Nah, Day one!!

no update costs might be one of the changes they introduce with the PS4, also why a lot of indies are jumping on board?
They haven't committed to dumping patch fees, but they have said they are willing to waive them on a case by case basis.

So is that just for indies, or is that across the board?

Everyone. Everyone, now, basically.

What I did, getting on board, went across the world and listened to feedback -- and said, "What are the biggest complaints, and how do we knock this out?" So that changed, and we continue to work every week on "what else are they complaining about?"

So if it's, hey, these guys are developing content for Vita, and we like the team, so we send them Vita kits as loaners for free. Or waiving patch fees for independent developers, if they need that support, then we're totally behind it.

Yeah, I still have some doubts whether the dev team is able to fix those issues.
With perhaps some Sony assistance on the PS4 version though, they could have a winner on their hands.

Well that was made obvious with Boehmia appearing on the developer collage for the PS4. Doesn't make much sense to put Arma 3 on the thing anyhow. Maybe after the PC version has shipped then they can focus on making it a console experience, not vice-versa please.

Holy crap you're right. Didn't realise that. It's all adding up now!!

I've wanted to jump on DayZ for a while now, and is one of my main drives for getting a decent PC, but if this happens I'll be on it Day 1. Sony could pull so many sales with the YouTube following DayZ already has. It would make it a lot more accessible.

A Bohemia Interactive dev made DayZ.

He didn't work for Bohemia when he created the DayZ mod.

Bohemia saw the mod go viral and employed him immediately though, so now it's a slightly bigger team working on the standalone version.

It sounds like you think it is a bad thing Sony is doing?
No it's great. I just wanted to make a joke.

I don't particular cared for DayZ after they took the offline hunger element out of it and I think the game didn't scale well when multiple servers came up but Sony should go for it.

But it's true. Many PC exclusive games have been streamlined a lot when moved to consoles.

If there's any game that could actually benefit from a little streamlining, it's DayZ.
Streamlining, not dumbing down.

For example, make the inventory actually useable and make interacting with items more user friendly.

I do actually agree. After all it's a mod and could use plenty of polishing. As for the inventory? Inventory is hard to use with pad so you get rid-off it altogether :b

It depends how they streamline it, for a gamepad or for a KB/M. The former being terrible with mouse controls. From their blog updates they're already streamlining it for KB/M controls, so that's happening regardless of other future versions.

Got to agree, DayZ is a good concept but it was fucking horrible to play.

actually it (PS4) seems to be the new ps1.
Agreed. PS1 had plenty pc ports (Diablo, Warcraft 2, C&C, Syndicate Wars, Quake 2 etc), had relatively elegant ram and it was easy to develop for unlike N64 (premature tech) and Saturn (clusterfuck). Even had an official Mouse.

Absolutely. SONY had so much success with the PS1 in part due to all the developer support they gave. They knew they had to earn the developers, so did everything in their power to get them on board. The end result was one of the best consoles in terms of library, "of the time" graphics, and lifestyle image ever.

With the PS2 they didn't need to, so they made a fucking complicated pig of a machine that took developers hours to figure out how to draw a single 2D shape. Yet it still became the most successful console of its time.

So with the PS3 they continued their weird architecture/little support approach. Success breeds arrogance.

Hungry SONY is best SONY.

SONY are hungry again. Developers and gamers alike win.

Hopefully PS4 lets them get back on top, and hopefully they learn from past mistakes.
