Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) coming to NA retail/eShop Summer 2013 (July 16)

Edit: It's funny. Someone just brought up the fact Sony owns Aniplex the other day (which I hadn't realized myself) in the last P5 thread and most dismissed the relationship as not mattering, haha. Of course it does.

I don't understand? Please explain.

What has that got to do with the next Persona? I know they showed the Anime or something, but surely that is a case by case basis for licensing the anime and not the game?

Just like how Sony can produce Spider-man films, but has Spider-Man movie based games on all platforms. I also believe they cannot use any other none Spider-Man Marvel character in the films too.

Oh man, I saw that teaser on Siliconera on thought it was an April fools joke. So glad I'm wrong.

Summer for 3DS is looking great!

The relationship doesn't matter in the sense that "Sony Music owns Aniplex and so they want all games on Sony platforms" because that's not true. Sony Music and Sony Computer Entertainment are different entities. But what does matter is that in terms of marketing and consumer base, the sort of products which Aniplex tends to produce target the same people in Japan who play stuff on Sony platforms - better screens, higher resolution, etc. In particular the PS3 is extremely popular among such audiences because many of them use the PS3 as their blu-ray player as well, and anime mostly sells on the blu-ray format. That's the reason why most Aniplex shows have game releases on PSP or PS3.

Right, right. The core argument is they have no reason to turn on the established demographic by uprooting the series.

Whoa, looks like I'll be getting my first mainline SMT game! Sooner than I thought!
I'll have to once again delay my Wii U purchase because of another 3DS game.

It's the Year of the 3DS!

“The return of the legendary Shin Megami Tensei series is one of the biggest milestones yet for ATLUS and the 3DS,” said Naoto Hiraoka, president and chief executive officer, Index Digital Media, Inc. “Since this is the first title from the original SMT series in a decade, we tapped the best developers from many of ATLUS’ acclaimed projects including Nocturne, Strange Journey, Persona, and Soul Hackers to create a premium experience that lives up to our fans’ and our own expectations.”

Just noticed this. That's some pretty funny PR spin. All of those projects had Meguro involved, two were directed by Hashino, three had Kaneko on art direction...

Strikes me as somewhat disingenuous.

How is it disingenuous when the core staff of SMT4 are the core staff of Nocturne, Strange Journey, and Soul Hackers? I dunno about that Persona bit though, maybe they shouldn't have put that in, lol.

I never thought they wouldn't, but it's still nice to get the confirmation and so soon. Can't fucking wait.

Well, I mean, when you say "From the team that brought you..." in reference to games, I feel like it's generally referring to the creative leads, right?. And SMT4 is lacking all of them.

Not trying to be disparaging, but I am curious about the turnaround time. The SMT series has classically had some of the best writing, and it's a bit strange that it's happening so fast. Makes me wonder if they translated the game right from the start, or if this is a rush job. I'm hoping the former rather than the latter, but I guess only time will tell.

Atlus, 3DS in-house support:
1. Devil Survivor Overclocked
2. Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
3. Shin Megami Tensei IV
4. Devil Survivor 2: Break Record
5. Etrian Odyssey IV
6. Etrian Odyssey: The Lady of Mieniam
7. Persona Spinoff? / Persona 5?

Atlus, PSP in-house support:
1. Princess Crown
2. Devil Summoner
3. Persona
4. Persona 3 Portable
5. Tokyo Mono Hara Shi
6. Persona 2: Innocent Sin
7. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

Only one title away and Atlus's 3DS in-house support will match their entire in-house support for the PSP.

And we're just two years into the lifecycle.

Most likely this was a simultaneous project. Arena had a swift turnaround time and it had lots of text with a good localization.

No Kaneko. No Meguro. No Hashino.

Isn't it just the Strange Journey team (Minus the art director and lead composer)?

Nocturne (the US version is based on the Maniacs version in Japan), Strange Journey, and Soul Hackers have the same team. Atlus is more than Kaneko, Meguro, and Hashino.

I'm interested in this game, glad it's coming out NA and hope EU gets it soon too.

I've never played many of the SMT games so I figured I'd start here! Hopefully I don't get lost ... I'm also picking up Soul Hackers later this month.

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.
Wow, this is great news! But because I didn't think this would happen until at least winter if not early 2014, I'm not sure I'll have the funds for it! Time to scrutinize my gaming budget.

I guess that I should be hyped coming from P4G but then I remember how delightfully region locked 3DS is and what wonderful job Atlus is doing with the european releases lately on 3DS.

Thanks Nintendo.

If Europeans really want this game, I highly suggest they go to VG+ or some other importer and pre-order this along with a US 3DS console, a working version Devil Survivor Overclocked, and Soul Hackers. Besides paying significantly less than you do for buying it locally, you also only have to avoid spoilers for as long as it takes for the game to ship across the pond, rather than upwards of 18 months.

After the disasters we've had to put up with recently, I honestly think Atlus fans should get used to owning US hardware for everything. Even Sony systems, widely regarded as region free, aren't 100% safe havens...

I really can't be bothered to give more money towards another 3DS especially how lame the hardware itself is. I'll just put the money and attention toward other games and skip them if they release a broken version years later.

But hey maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt. MAYBE we will get the game this year without bugs...

I still need to finish Strange Journey and Innocent Sin before Soul Hackers is released and now SMT IV is coming out in a few months?! I think I'm going to die from Megaten overload...

I was not expected this game to be released in North America so early. This year is really packed with Atlus titles for the 3DS. I will be preordering this game at the earliest opportunity.

This fact seems to regularly elude Dantis, as you've no doubt realized. >_>;

Man, I hope Atlus can keep these releases closer from now on. I'd love to have a less prolonged wait for stuff like Persona 5.
