Arma 3 Alpha - March 5th - 25 Euros

It's like a bad DayZ mod but without the zombies.

Who's been with the series since OFP? What do you think of Arma 3?

I always thought that Wasteland must be like DayZ...but I am not seeing it. I played wasteland for the first time yesterday and actually had a really good time.

DayZ: persistent characters, no teams, have to scavenge for items, no bases

Wasteland: no persistent characters, three faction, lots of vehicles with weapons inside, store to purchase equipment from, dynamic missions, bases

They're really not that similar.

Too bad no more servers run Blitzkrieg, I wanted to try that out. Oh, and I've been playing since OFP.

ArmA III on a base level is just a more polished, refined, realistic OFP. Whether or not its campaign and setting match the immersion of OFP remains to be seen. But if it means anything, ArmA II is getting a remake of OFP that enters public beta very soon.

I'm most excited with ArmA III to see how all of the previous iterations hold up in the new engine. People have ported some of the islands from older titles to the game and they look very good due to the new engine, and I believe Bohemia plans to have some legacy support for bringing over ArmA II stuff. Having OFP and ArmA stuff all in one game make it a supremely massive experience, as if the scope for ArmA III wasn't enough to prove this. :p

my very first wasteland game I spawned on a beach with some guy pretending to be Frankie from YouTube, his name was the same as Frankies YouTube name which was a dead giveaway as he doesn't show his real name on his videos and also did a half assed accent trying to sound like him. he called me a bambi as I prob looked like a complete noob but the game crashed before I had a chance to call him out on it.

I just got the game. First time to ARMA, and the closest thing I've played to this is (I guess) America's Army back a long time ago, otherwise... Call of Duty. LOL!

I guess I'm in for some shock...

*installing now*

It will take some getting used to.

Yeah, it seems to be quite challenging. I wanna try to learn all the controls first... is there some way to create a game without enemies nor time limit nor anything and just be able to move around?

Also it seems there's a scenario editor... could I just, like.. add some vehicles so I can also learn how to use them? Or that's something quite hard to set up?

Ya, pop open the editor and double click on the map where you want to set something. It is what I did actually to learn the controls and it went a long way in me enjoying the game finally.

Oh lord I thought that Stratis was the only thing ARMA 3 was going to have. I didnt know there was going to be a land mass 14x bigger than it in the game o_O

Yeah, Stratis feels pretty small compared to Chernarus in Arma 2 (Chernarus is 225km²). You can always try Arma 2 free is you want to get a sense of how big it will be in Arma 3.

But the small size of Stratis also makes it very suitable for certain types of missions.

I've got 3 arma lite passes to give out. My steam ID is Judohawk. Would also love for anyone to add me. I'm new to the series and don't know what to do. But if anyone wants a pass they can add me on steam or message me here.

I finally got around to playing Wasteland last night. It was ok. Certainly not as intense or enjoyable as DayZ.

ArmA3 seems like a return to form. I loved Op Flash to death. The singleplayer campaign was wonderful in that game. The campaigns in ArmA and ArmA2 never really had the same kind of variety. ArmA3 seems like it will be able to match Op Flash in that area.

I just finished installing and setting up FacetrackNoIR. For just using a cheap webcam it actually works pretty good. It has some delay, but it's not that bad. Now I kinda want to get a real TrackIR sometime in the future.

Having just submitted my first bug report, I feel like I've contributed.

I found out that if you equip a pistol while crouched and lower it, you then move at sprint speeds indefinitely, while remaining totally silent.

Man, this game definitely doesn't mess around with you... After playing so much CoD, I'm getting my ass beaten here.

I'm on the vehicle mission thing where you have to steal a vehicle and destroy some others. I have spent so much time trying to get into the base with the vehicle, but every time the alarm goes on...
What I'm doing right now is basically go and kill the two soldiers on the post nearby, then try to infiltrate the base from the back, but the soldiers spot me so easily even if only part of my body is visible for a bit... damn!

Anyway, will try again later. I'm liking this :)

More Insurgency is best insurgency. As long as you got Virtual Ammobox System though for the custom gear. Speaking of custom gear, I'm liking the M4 and M16 mods. Shame the m16 silencer hasn't been released yet.

Hate looking through this thread, I wish I could afford to build a PC to run this game with decent specs. Can't wait until I'm no longer a poor college student...

What are your specs? I was running it on a 1.6ghz clocked to 2.0 ghz intel dual core, ati radeon 4850 with 2 gigs of ram. Definitely playable with lowest settings even on highly populated servers.

I only play Wasteland now in ArmA III. I don't know if I could go back to DayZ / Arma II at this point. While I wish my character would save, it's so much more fun while maintaining the tension. Dying sucks still.

I tried to play ArmA 2 the other day and closed it after like 5 minutes lol

Massive props to the OPFOR team from last night who built a massive base at one of the gun stores.

It was probably one of the better experiences with the game. The entire OPFOR just working as a team, guarding the base and taking on both BLUFOR and Independent enemies trying to raid us.

I literally spent 2 hours providing overwatch with my trusty MXM-7.62 [which is for some reason nerfed to 6.5], just hiding under a bush 400 meters away from the base. Spotting, providing intel on enemy movements, taking out flankers.

The only iffy thing I encountered is invisible geometry. I see an enemy in the distance, take the shot but somehow the hits don't register. He's behind cover, but it's beyond geometry draw distance so it doesn't show up on my screen. So I see this guy squirming around but can't do anything about it.

Cool story: One Independent soldier walked up to our base, saw the graveyard of his fallen comrades and quickly retreated. We all decided to hunt him down with ATV's and Hunters. The guy ran for his life haha.

This game is cool, I love Wasteland. But to be fair, it all depends on where you spawn and what the vehicle spawn [refresh] rate of the server is. I had another round where I literally had to run around 30 minutes before I found a vehicle with a rifle in its inventory. That is just not fun at all.

just got this yesterday

been a bohemia fan since 2001 and still consider ofp as having one of the most robust single player campaigns in an fps ever. played a bit of arma 1 (@ 800 x 600 on a 6600!) but passed on arma 2

anyone have any cool user made coop missions they can direct me to?

Hey ArmaGAF, I know a couple of you use my Diver Stats mod so I thought I'd update yall. Version 1.34a has been released with some new features and bug fixes. The size has been reduced from 5.8MB to 515KB so it's much more mission friendly. A total list of changes and download link is available on the Armaholic page

The mod has also been featured by BIS on Arma3.com and on their official facebook page

Feedback as always is appreciated.

You can find missions on armaholic but I think the highly rated ones were made on a old build so they don't work unless the creator updates them. They can work with a few changes to the mission script but its quite a cumbersome process if you don't know where to begin. Just get some of the newer ones.

I started playing on the rob gaming server for insurgency. Well run group and acre is required. If you just want to go solo, try the invade and annex maps. So basically insurgency and invade.

just crashed a full chopper on one of the domination modes, quickly alt-f4ed after that one

helo controls seem a bit different from arma/ofp, much more difficult to keep the chopper steady

also i don't see the appeal of wasteland, i never played dayz but wasn't that good because of the zombies and persistence? wasteland just feels like a really inefficient TDM.

I don't even attempt to fly choppers in an online game. As in, any of them. Battlefield or whatever I am staying away.

So if I absolutely loved OFP1 (probably my favorite single player shooter of all time) but didn't like Arma 1 or 2 that much, should I get this? My main problem with the previous Armas was that the shooting felt so bad and awkward. Also the campaigns weren't anywhere near OFP level.

Edit: Fuck it, it's just 25€. Just bought it.
