Xbox v.Next and Only Online by Paul Thurrott: Deal With It :)

I disagree. He is Mr. Microsoft to me.

Hey man don't let me put you down we all have our fantasy worlds we like to live in.

So that pathetic damage control was the "truth"? Interesting, didn't know that.

He was asked what he knew and gave his opinion, how is that damage control?

What I really dont understand is how Thurrott mentions the 3minute rumour but then plays dumb on what it means.

Is it really difficult for someone who is supposedly tech minded to understand that 3 minutes without connection and you lose games/apps. I hope he doesn't think thats a positive.

If he understood that very basic info, then he might be able to understand why so many are people are freaking out,

You need to relisten he said he didn't know about the exact details on what always-on is going to mean for the next Xbox, he can't confirm or deny the 3-minute thing so he didn't comment on it....

I think Im done being outraged over the possibility of an online-only console. Im just going to wait for the reveal and decide whether or not online only makes sense. I dont see how they could possibly pull that off, but we're all dancing around the same non-info and Microsoft hasnt given us shit to bite onto yet.

Good news:
Probably no backwards compatibility
Always online to function
$500 without subscription

it's all POSITIVE.

I'm confused by people being outraged by this in the first place. There are plenty of products made that I don't want, need, or purchase and I never get outraged by them. I just don't spend money on them. The next Xbox will likely be the same deal.

halo, forza, fable, gears!!!

I already got all of those on the 360.

What if Don Mattrick comes out at E3 clapping after a little tease video and then does that scummy smile of his. Then he just pulls out a gun, shoots an audience member in the front row and states "$500 by tonight and I don't rape your wife and destroy the rest of your life, I'll even be nice and throw in this bricked console." Then he just drops the mic and walks away as Microsoft reps run out to grab the dead guys wallet

....

Idk man, Microsoft is feeling like a shitty company lately.

I'm going to try and keep an open mind about their next system, but holy fuck are they off to a bad start. Like Nintendo and Sony I expect a lot of spin spin spin, please wait wait wait. In the end even statements such as it's all about the games are not enough if some of the rumors about their system come true.

Should be interesting!

Pack it up guys. ultim8p00 has claimed the intellectual high ground. No point in arguing with someone who possesses such superior understanding. I for one feel suitably chastised and find myself rethinking not only this article, but everything I have ever known.

Seriously, does dismissing people like this ever work?

He PM'd me and told me that I don't know the difference between a conclusion and an assumption (which is a conclusion).

Needless to say, I packed it up. I'm outmatched.

I did listen to it, hence the reason why I said he was playing dumb.

He referenced the 3 minute rumour and that rumour is clearly worded.

"If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time--currently three minutes, if I remember correctly--the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started.""

Is that really that difficult for Thurrott to understand?

He wasn't playing dumb, he didn't know all the details and wasn't about to comment on them without knowing is that really difficult for you to understand?

Yet he was saying that all from what he see's, which he says isn't much or as he states his guessing, is positive

He made it perfectly clear most of what he said is speculation....

We're already seeing the media narrative, and most likey Microsoft's as well, for why always online isn't a big deal.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/xbox-720-requires-internet-connection-to-load-games-6406433

There is a video at that link where the Gamespot reporter says "but if you're watching this, the news may probably doesn't affect you that much". So there is is. You have an online connection and you're on it right now! An Xbox that demands you be online has no downside!

This is mostly true if you view games like movie rentals. If however you actually care about being able to use the games you buy years from now, it's horrible news. You will forever be at the mercy of Microsoft in regards to playing the games you bought, and supposedly own. That is a pretty major negative in my book.

It's all about spreading outrage to everyone else. "Voting with one's wallet" isn't enough because there are a lot of people out there who don't realize the implications of "giving in" to these types of practices. Those people who buy the product will validate these practices because the company doesn't care about a minority bitching on the internet if a majority buys the product anyway.

It's just premature though since they'll be plenty of time for that once these features are confirmed.

Damn waffle, you so thug.

Don't start no prollems d'ain't be no prollems.

I really just want all of this to be false so I don't get hit with a big bomba May 21st. Halo games aren't good enough to keep me unwaveringly loyal to Microsoft's console entrants anymore.

Sounds like the Microsoft PR ninjas have sprung into action. Either that or Gamespot are scared of alienating one of their advertising partners; wouldn't be the first incident of this kind.

Really? This is your best analogy?

How do you debate with people that have this type of mindset? What you show is just how volatile people are on the Internet where there is no middle-ground.

Your example isn't really the best one. When a person watches a movie they don't really care about online services.

I spent 20 hours this week playing Bioshock Infinite and at no time whatsoever did I give a flying fuck about any online services.

I just wanted to play my game, without distraction.

Not everybody has ADHD and other mental afflictions.

There's fucking NOTHING different about me playing Bioshock Infinite or me reading an eBook on my Kindle or listening to a song on my iPod or watching a Blu-Ray on my BD player. Not any one of those things should ever require that I am connected to do it.

If the nextbox kicks you back to the dashboard completely, that's stupid. The way everything works now is perfect and I would hope MS knows that.

If you get kicked from live today, you just lose the ability to use the online functions of the game. That's fine, no big deal.

But if they're building this amazing Windows ecosystem, it would be stupid for your year old mobile device(Windows Phone 8) to be more functional than your new $500 entertainment box when it doesn't have an internet connection.

Analogy? I'm not being analagous to anything. I simply wrote a satirical post that may sound out of left field but is really just a play because Microsoft has been treating us in this way but in a much more covert way.

Calm down buddy. It's ok, take a chill-pill. If it does require an online connection at all times don't buy it if you can't stand your system being connected. I don't imagine the system is all of the sudden not going to be able to play anything if the connection fails. If it does Microsoft may have a system that under-performs more than Windows Vista did.

The point is game consoles are nothing like a DVD player anymore. They have services that require a connection, they have updates, they have patches, they have multiplayer. So of course there isn't as much of a desire to have your DVD player being connected.

I am waiting for an official announcement but I will add my two cents with the assumption this rumor is true.

I have a PS3 but my main console was 360 this gen. I have 356 DLed games on my HDD, countless DLC including 350+ Rockband songs and over 100 retail games with 100K Gamerscore.

I play my console ALL THE TIME.

4 months ago me waiting in line for a launch NextBox was a foregone conclusion. Duh. If this always online rumor is true, I will choose to buy a PS4 at launch. Sony will get my early-adopter dollars and my word-of-mouth championing of the system and it's merits. I play the most games out of my friends, they all game but I watch the industry and post on places like GAF. I convinced a few of my friends on the 360 this last gen.

It's not that I want to buy a PS4 over the NextBox - I don't. It's that Microsoft is forcing me to. It bums me out, not because of brand loyalty, but more because I like the ecosystem and friends list on my 360. And, I'd be lying if I said my gamerscore doesn't make me want to continue with a Microsoft product. But I have to put my foot down on this anti-consumerism.

If NextBox requires an internet connection I will go PS4 at launch. It pisses me off a little bit because Microsoft really didn't have to do much to keep me in their fold. If this rumor comes to fruition MS figured out one of only a handful of ways to get a truly entrenched supporter to jump ship.

I hope that thought worries the big wigs at Microsoft...

That's really not funny or anyway contributing to this discussion.

I think it's the fact the main rumours are that you cannot play your single player games on the next generation of Xbox without verification of being connected to the internet.

That's the issue.

But there's never a point with my 360 or PSN when it's not already connected to the Internet. I fail to see the problem nor understand the drama. I suspect that goes for most people on XBL/PSN and not purely circumstantial.

I think the people here that are most upset are really upset with themselves because they know regardless of the outcome, they will end up buying the machine anyway. On some serious, "I hate myself for doing this" shit. Over some sort of perceived danger or threat of an online machine.

People who have a true issue with this will choose not to purchase it, right? Time will tell. In the meantime, anyone brave enough to enter these threads has to deal with a bunch of dudes sobbing in a mirror yelling, "I hate you! I hate you for making me do this!"

I think it should be noted that this line from the article was not in the OP:

I was asked about this guy’s alleged meltdown on Twitter and via email a number of times. My take-aways were simple:

1) Always-on connectivity is indeed part of the next Xbox, and it was interesting to see this guy confirm that unofficially...

Of course more and more people are coming out to get behind the always online rumor, but at least with this article, the "my take-aways" line makes it sound like he's just drawing conclusions form the twitter situation, like most of us are doing here, and not confirming inside info. The preceding line makes a big difference in how he is presenting these bullet points as his assumptions, not fact.

MS will obviously spin it as a positive with some corporate / marketing drivel at E3 about:

"Our vision for Next Generation is a community that is constantly at your fingertips, whether its sharing your play session live with friends, or having a skype conversation while enjoying you're game or movie."

Even though they will pull the wool over the sheeps eyes by probably NOT stating if you can play offline. They would rather that be officially confirmed in a much more hush-hush fashion so that the average consumer never finds out.

The truth is what you said isn't that far off on how some people conduct themselves in forums.

The point is that none of the things that a next generation console should have: the updates, the patches, the multiplayer, the social connections, the online stores, none of it requires consumers to give up basic rights that they have had since the 2600. Required online does not make a console more functional, it makes it less functional.

I really don't understand the mindset that it is not ok to express your opinion about a product before it is available for purchase.

PSN was down for 24 days. There's no guarantee that can't happen again with their network or anybody elses.

There's simply no point in buying a game console where connectivity issues can keep you from being able to play your games.

Don't see the drama?

The drama is because it is not customer focused. There is absolutely no benefit to the customer requiring internet connectivity to start an app or game or suspending it after three minutes of non-connection.

People are pissed because they might want to get a NextBox but if they have unstable inet that's a huge problem. It's also about shoving something down your throat.

Someone put this out there earlier, how would you feel about a blu-ray player that would only work if connected to the internet?

Seriously, try to think outside of your own sphere of existence.

Xbox live was down for over 72 hours during a holiday season. I remember being pissed, and then I bought the game on PS3.

This always online (required) is BS. I would rage hard on any company that does it.

I believe everyone remembers my Anti-Steam rants when they disabled your games if you didn't agree to the ever changing terms of service.
