I hope some of you guys are seriously not hoping for Pikmin before Fall.

Pikmin is Miyamato's new Super Mario franchise. His final legacy IP. There's no way he's going to send the game out to die in Summer, Wii-U drought be damned. The game will come Fall at the earliest.

I don't see how Pikmin would fair too much better in the fall than it would in the summer. It's not a giant franchise to begin with.

The only way I see this happening is if Nintendo really doesn't have much for the holiday. If they actually plan on shipping Wink Waker HD and a Mario/Kart game this year, launching Pikmin 3 alongside them would be suicide. I'd say it's better off on it's own in the summer, but I guess that's just me.

This is fucking pathetic, Nintendo.

At this point it has to be Iwata purposefully delaying games so he can save his ass in the next fiscal year, right?

In that light, the Wii U's track is slightly less than the Gamecube's.
Not a chance. At least the Gamecube had Super Smash bros. Melee, which is still one of the most popular fighting games of all-time. I still don't know why people are expecting Mario Kart and 3D Mario to be released this fall when we haven't seen gameplay footage of either. Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land were rushed to hell and back, and both games used recycled MKWii/SMG assets.

The new fiscal year just started I believe.

I am guessing they have made the decision that they need a steady consistent build up to the holidays and that the first half of this year is a lost cause anyways.

Oh god, a Metroid game for the holiday. That's pretty bad in terms of sales potential.

Wasn't Metroid Prime the 2nd best selling game in its release month (in NA), only behind GTA? It did pretty well. Heck, for a gamecube game, 2nd best seller in November behind a huge PS2 release would be considered knocking it out of the park by most measures.

Nintendo has confirmed that we'll get Mario Kart Wii U and 3D Mario Wii U PLAYABLE DEMOS for E3.

That, and the launches of Durango + PS4 heavily points to the release of 3D Mario and Mario Kart U for this holiday season.

I sure as fuck wouldn't be complaining about this drought if Wii U had a game as infinitely replayable as Smash Bros.

Hell, I'd be okay with Pikmin right now. JUST GIVE US PIKMIN.

I think Nintendo needed to bring more than that for the GameCube's first year. Metroid's traditionally been a fairly small franchise, and even though it did well in November, it clearly wasn't enough to help the GC.

I loved Melee. Not enough to last me 6 months though.

This could be an exception, but last day of the month usually means a placeholder date.

While gamefly normally just list TBD for its placeholders, they do sometimes list it as the last of the month. And of the 3 currently listed as such, 2 are Nintendo games (Mario & Luigi 3DS, Mario Golf 3DS).

So yeah, there's a good chance its just a placeholder. But the thread would end up the same regardless so, eh. Probably just means we're really getting it on the 25th.

Business as usual with Nintendo continuing to build trust with their most faithful customers.
We are all fools for falling in this trap.

June 30 is a Sunday, and Nintendo tends to put big releases on Sunday.

Of course, G&W is hardly a big release, which leads me to believe that it won't be the only Wii U game releasing on that day, similar to how the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon played second fiddle to Luigi's Mansion 2.

It also had pretty decent third party support. It had a solid number of exclusives it's first year. REmake, Super Monkey Ball, Rogue Leader, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, Sonic Adventure 2 all come to mind. It also might be worth mentioning, in 2002, Gamecube had most of the major 3rd party support. Most of the shooters and sports games hit GCN in year one, and were cancelled later on after poor sales.

Pikmin 3 is the big mystery here. I wonder if its done and they're just holding it back to beef up their holiday lineup.

Historically Nintendo has held back from releasing games in April / May when they don't have very many games to support the system. (See Wii's 2011, or the GameCube's 2002 and 2003 in North America as proof of this).

It's obvious they're holding Pikmin 3 back for the 2nd half of the year. Better to have a dead April + May than an August-November that's stretched too thin.

Um, because Iwata said they would in their pre-E3 Nintendo Direct?

Ah, that reminds me of the most lol holiday lineup Nintendo ever had, the 2005 GC lineup, with just Mario Party 7 and Super Mario Strikers.

To be fair, SMS was pretty awesome!

Yeah, that 2005 lineup utterly collapsed when Twilight Princess was pushed back.

I think you have the wrong idea. These games are not done, and Nintendo is having their HD development struggles/regula delays. I don't think either of these games are ready whatsoever. With that said, longer development time can only be a good thing. I'd rather a longer, prettier Pikmin 3 with multiplayer in September than a short, single-player, decent Pikmin in May. I can't be alone on that thinking.

That would maybe make sense if Nintendo was handling the development of The Wonderful 101. Platinum is already well versed in HD development, so there should be no "struggle" there. Game & Wario is already finished. That only leaves Pikmin 3, and its already been in development for what? Six years now? It could very well be done now. Fact of the matter is we don't have any evidence one way or the other. Frankly, I don't know if I buy this whole "Nintendo HD Struggles" narrative at all. I think whats more likely is that when the 3DS started to falter, they shifted resources to save 3DS at the unfortunate expense of the Wii U. Its pretty well established that Nintendo has always had problems juggling two platforms, especially at the beginning of a new generation.

I find it pretty hilarious/sad that it got to the point where Nintendo was like "Let's throw endless amounts of Mario Party at it", and that pretty much defined the latter half of the GC's life.

Sounds right. Doubt we're getting any Wii U games in May from Nintendo. Terrible.

HOWEVER. In June and moving forward, we'll probably get at least one game per month

June: Wario
July: Wonderful 101, Wii Fit U
August: Pikmin
September: Wii Party U
October: Zelda Wind Waker HD
November: 3D Mario
December: Mario Kart U

No he didn't.

7/10 is glowing?

"But the content of their review!"

Nobody wants another mini-game collection. Period.
The content of the review indeed. They are enthusiastic about most of the games. They say it should have been bundled instead of Nintendo Land. They say youtube videos can't convey the pleasure there is to try it with friends.

It's a welcome addition to Wii U's library/party game philosophy. Obviously it needs to be sold at a budget price.

I'm pretty sure he did. If someone wants to fact check that be my guest.

Here's a transcript:

Satoru Iwata said:
"[As for Super Smash Bros. Wii U] Mr. Sakurai, who is leading the development efforts, told us, we set the timing to reveal the first game screens [trailer in the Japanese version of the ND] of the new Smash Brothers at this year's E3. Game development is on track. I would like to ask you to wait for just a little longer. Now, I'd like to talk about some Nintendo titles, about which we haven't made any previous announcements.

Our EAD Tokyo team, which created the Mario Galaxy series for Wii, and Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS, is working on New 3D Mario Action Game for Wii U. And we are also working on Mario Kart for Wii U, a series that has seen one installment for each hardware system we've released. We are planning to show these titles in playable form at E3. Please wait to see how these experiences have evolved on Wii U."

The only thing Nintendo said is that they'll be playable at E3. Of course, I fully expect them to be out for the holidays.

If Nintendo got out Mario 3D Land and rushed Mario Kart 7 for holiday 2011, there's no way the Wii U games will miss this holiday.

1,000,000 behind GTA. And only if you counted everything as a separate SKUs (so no combining Madden, Harry Potter, etc). And if you ignore the ass-whopping it (and everything else) got during the next month when the PS2 went all Christmas on everyone.

I honestly don't care about Game and Wario. I just hope Nintendo has enough sense to release Pikmin before it if this date is correct.

True. But I hope we aren't Getting Mario U Land.

While Mario 3D land was good, it was no Galaxy, and it would be a big letdown (compared to expectations of a console mario) if that is what we end up with.

That date would make no sense, the game is out in Japan, wouldnt this delay be more on NOA? What would be the point of not releasing it now?

June 30th? I don't like the sound of how the Spring software lineup is gonna be.

- Speaker phone Conference call -

Iwata: Hello Reggie-san. I regret to inform you that most our planned Wi U software for this quarter has been delayed.

Reggie: Oh, so that means no Pikmin 3 or Wonderful 101 ?

Iwata: That is correct.

Reggie: ... I see. Well, is there anything coming out at all ?

Iwata: Wii Fit U is still coming and I can confirm that Game & Wario will be out by the end of June.

Reggie: [ puts a handgun underneath his chin] Mr. Iwata, with all do respect, do you really think consumers are going to buy a Wii U for software like Wii Fit without having the expanded audience already on board our console ?

Iwata: I do. I believe it will be an evergreen title that will sell for years.

Reggie: You mean like how that was our expectation with previous software such as New SMBU and Nintendo Land ?

Iwata: Yes, but do not think I am naive like that. I know how bad things look. By the way, I also have some other bad news.

Reggie: Great. What is it this time ?

Iwata: Well, the planned Spring update has been delayed to May.

Reggie: Uh-huh.

[handgun discharges]

Iwata: Please understand ... Reggie-san ?! Hello ? Oh, no. This is not good. Who is going to host E3 now ?

[a man picks up Reggie's phone]

Scott Moffitt: I will, Mr. Iwata.

Yes, it could very easily be a placeholder, and I feel pretty dumb for not realizing that immediately. Of course, it's a Sunday, Nintendo's preferred day of release for bigger games, so there's always the chance that it's a real date even though Nintendo also releases games on Monday. The fact that G&W is by no means a tent-pole release and June 30 literally being the last day of Q2 makes it seem more like a placeholder, too.

I'm going to be bold and continue to predict an April-ish release, which will be announced very soon, possibly as early as tomorrow or Thursday, but definitely before the end of next week.

Pretty much. Get ready for a price cut and a "please understand" for investors to go along with it. E3 relaunch.

Oh no, I definitely think we will get something a lot more open. Nothing like 3D Land. I meant the "3D Mario Action Game" Iwata announced.

So much for the first half of the year. Enough delays, Nintendo. Tell us the damn spring schedule already. :(
