Dark Souls II 12 minute gameplay video up [Update: 10 Minute Q&A Video]

Interesting place holder. Has it been confirmed as a 2014 release?

The game was announced as a late 2013 release, but not long after the announcement, there was an interview with the development team that indicated that it might be delayed to next year. Until From and Namco have an official release date, New Years Eve is as good a placeholder as any.

The Q&A felt horribly staged. Why does the translator have to translate what the game director said but not the question that was asked? No wonder that guy looked bored as fuck.

Probably the director was comfortable enough with his English listening skills, but not with his English speaking skills. It's something you see fairly regularly.

Uhhh. Most likely not. This was probably all staged.

The thing I'm most curious about right now is what the new soul/human form-humanity mechanic will be. That strange sun symbol has of course a meaning...

Perhaps he understands English but doesn't speak it well so he speaks in Japanese? Or, you know, editing.

That was my thought. Could have just as easily been staged. Doesn't matter either way.

I really hope they had a lot of points or whatever in hp, it seemed like it took a lot of regular hits to do any damage. Also the atmosphere is awesome and so are all the particle effects.

Fears assuaged, this looks like it will dodge the bullet of 3rd sequel curse. :)

The only thing I didn't really like from the video was the large, bright blue lock-on icon. It's too big and kind of distracting, it should be more subtle. But that's a minor thing for now.

About estus vs those stones, maybe the game director just meant that those stones of healing behave exactly like the estus (e.g. rechargeable heals instead of consumables)?

It's also very clear that his gear is for demo purposes only. The initial Dark Souls gameplay videos were the same, showed a guy with 50 in every stats and wearing full black knight gear parading through an early version of the Duke's Archives, the full game wasn't really like that, and that's fine, cause it still gives us a good idea of what the game will be like. I'm very certain you won't be able to block strong attacks with a torch in the full game, you certainly couldn't with the skull lantern after all.

That, or maybe the game director understands English but does not feel comfortable speaking it, it's entirely possible. I doubt it's staged, cause the answers felt natural enough, but who cares.

I wish the IGN guy asked about the 3 right-hand weapons. I saw at least two instances where the player had a small sword (or long dagger), then swapped to an axe and then a big sword in the same hand without going into inventory. Was that just for the demo, or can you have 3 weapons now? (Maybe a small weapon like a dagger or mailbreaker, and two bigger "main" ones, or something?)

Ah yes, the world of Giants.

You know, if they do a Demons Souls II, they could make it themed like that.

12 major bosses across 6 worlds, except they are Shadow-of-the-Colossus type or something.

I cant see how else they could differentiate Demon's from Dark Souls

Or perhaps people just need to deal with the fact that Demon's Souls is dead. I really want to know what Sony is officially doing with the IP though. I mean, they did help with making it, right? Surely they aren't happy just letting it be

Lordran is the world of Giants, son! Mark my words.

What a weird interview..

Looks very unpolished, but I guess that's natural since it's a long way from release.

As a someone who played DS for more than 200 hours between the Xbox version and the PC version and am about to finish NG+, I still have to say that for me the focus on "death" in this session is a bit..disappointing. That scripted bridge scene sums up a part of what I didn't like about DS; semi-random deaths and somewhat heavy trial and error gameplay (which some people for some odd reason denies exists in DS..). I get the accomplishment thing (obviously since I stuck with the game so long), but it has to make perfect logical sense every time, and it seems we're not going to be there yet with DS2 either. Just my personal opinion though.

That's a form of gating and only one instance of scripted death happens in both Demons' Souls and Dark Souls. What I took away from it was there was more ways to die which meant that the puzzle and exploration could be made more complex.

I find their entire focus on player death in the marketing to be idiotic and only feed into misconceptions. And the death montages are pretty dumb too. The gif people were posting with the chariot running over the guy? Looks more like someone who forgot the dodge-roll button exists, heh. It's just artificial and silly, but fortunately irrelevant to the game itself.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
This looks just as incredible as I imagined.

Hey NB, if you're hiring for this project, someone PM me haha.

^Ifrit DS style.

^Am I only one to suddenly reminisce about the London scene from Reign of Fire after seeing this?

You could be right, it's definitely a possibility. I'm pretty sure that they just edited out the question being relayed to him. They keep the Director's answer in Japanese because otherwise he would look a bit like a third wheel with only the other two chatting. :p

I don't think the chariot could be avoided by rolling, there was a spike sticking out of the wheel that was more or less the width of the tunnel.

was the character in that build altered to take less damage in order to show more?

most enemies at the beginning of the game chipped away little health... surely they haven't scaled back enemy damage?

This demo clearly had adjusted character stats.

I'm sure any kind of damage done or damage taken was just intended for the demo to flow the way they wanted. I would expect the final game to be similar to DS 1.

Maybe, but then again the player had massive health and stamina.

Player was OP for the demo. I mentioned that its very easy to notice cuz of the long ass life and magic bars.

There seemed to be enough room to dodge it on the left since it was veering to the player's right, and you've got the roll's i-frames as well.

Either way, the main point is that I'm not at all a fan of the overly reductive death-heavy marketing style. If it appeals to anybody it will only be existing Souls fans who are already going to buy the game, which doesn't seem hugely effective.

A lot of people on the net have been saying it looks easier, enemies do less damage and he holds too many weapons but the character could have been buffed a tonne to allow for an easier presentation, I mean a normal character would die a lot and have to take his time in battle and they didn't have a lot of time to show it.

I imagine it will be more or less the same as DS1

I hope we fight three bosses at once this time. Orstein & Smough are old news. :p

I shamefully never finished DS. I got far (I think) to where there is a dragon is a cave filled with crystals? Not sure how far along that is. But at that point my PS3 died and I just ended up selling everything. Picked it up on PC but haven't returned to it yet.

It's a developer demonstration. You can't ever assume that the difficulty you see is what you'll get. Even in a Souls game, they want to show him advance a little bit without dying every 30 seconds.

I will not buy the game until Durante releases a fix. I'm sure there will be a whole slew of problems for the PC once again.

Looks great otherwise, and I'm glad they took out GFWL for the PC version.

Looks like garbage crap. Cancelled all my preorders, burnt all my Souls games, flipped over a table, smashed a vase.

What happened to the game supposedly looking next-generation on par with Watch Dogs?!?! :p

I agree, plus that one section where the player got stuck between the two enemies looked really poor - no idea why they showed that.

I wish they did a Q&A, it would have been useful if they did

It was probably edited. Showing the questions being translated into japanese isn't particularly interesting for most viewers; cutting out the developers response and only show the translator would be kindof disrespectful, and dubbing over it would be weird.

I think it looks fine, but we'll probably need to give Durante 23 minutes with the PC version before we know what it can really look like.
