Dark Souls II 12 minute gameplay video up [Update: 10 Minute Q&A Video]

Okay, more serious impressions of the footage and trailer.

I do think the game looks really rough right now. Considering they talked about making a brand new engine for a huge graphical boost, and having tons more staff than Dark Souls, etc.... It doesn't really look representative of that now. The movements don't look as tight, the combat looks rather off, the rest just looks like... Dark Souls.

I can see what the team is going for this time though. More set pieces, more variety, interesting shit happening in various stages, but I just hope the core of the game isn't weaker. The actual level design and methodical progression in the series is what is most important really.

Seems like almost everything that came out of Edge about this game was either misleading or outright false.

Well the cloth animations on the kilt/armor skirt looked as good as Watch_Dogs, and the character animation was dramatically smoother. I'd say the dragon bridge sequence was actually a huge step forward and on par with Watch_Dogs or 1313. And when we blow up the resolution to 1080p on the PC I think the game will look early next gen.

Also the game isn't finished yet. I bet it will look better by release.

But Demon's is owned by Sony, no?

The question is, why hasn't Sony tried to find a developer to publish Demon's Souls II?
Probably because they can't find one, but it seems like they are leaving $ on the table

The director of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 is working on a different project than Dark Souls 2. Maybe he's working on Demon's Souls 2 for Sony?

The environments really do look like a blend of demons souls and dark souls.

I really like the interior of that dragon mansion, especially the area where that cyclops thing is that breaks through the wall.

I do think the torch mechanic is potentially boss, though, in terms of what it may mean for level design. I kinda hope they don't have any light magic or a sunlight maggot helm or whatever and limit you to the torch every time you go into a pitch-black area. :p

Brave it in the dark, and you've got the ability to carry a shield (I think we have to assume the 100% phys def on the torch is temporary) or more weapon/magic. Carry a torch, and you've got more visibility, but weakened offense and especially non-evasive defense.

Going through Tomb of the Giants with a light spell or sunlight maggot was very different than using the lantern in your left hand or simply delving into the dark with only the light generated from your character.

I heard places like GT and IGN before saying the stuff they saw a while ago looked almost as good as the CG trailer :/ now the stuff we saw had some great moments with light and shadow and fire but it was incredibly rough in other areas, and it seemed to be PC footage at that.
It doesn't matter THAT much but I hope it gets better visuals by launch

One thing that made me think is their Q&A comment about the wind being a factor for various things. Imagine lighting a torch to search a deadly area, only for the wind to burst in a mess up you plans. :D

looks fine, not amazed and felt like the setup was not doing it any favors.

you need to show like a straight 20 minute run of a level so you can appreciate the level design.

it's what we buy souls games for

I really liked the chariot bit

Looks like more of the same with a few improvements. I'm more than ok with that.

Will all just come down to the level and enemy design which is a good place to be. Hopefully they take the time to do it right (first 2/3rds of dark souls) and don't just phone it in (the final third)

Guys it'll probably look better later. They were only 25 percent done with the game when it was announced. It's probably not even halfway finished yet. Lol. This was kind of just here to convince people that the game wasn't going to be babbys first souls game.

The enemy heath bar was weird. It drains too slow and doesn't really give a good idea how close a enemy was to dying until it actually just does. And that pop-in for things right in front of you bleh.

Really dug the reply to the question about appealing to new players. It doesn't seem like these guys have clueless, mass-appeal-driven, idiotic marketing execs breathing down their necks.

obnoxious blue lockon.. lighting still wack as hell but now there are some sources that cast shadows. shadows pop in.

good to see the demo video was done on a pc \o/

Keep in mind this is probably an early build of the game. They still have to add a number indicator to show how much damage each attack does like in the first game.

That's exactly what everyone wanted. Or do you mean the graphics? Because that probably will get refined.
It's not the graphics. They're remaking the same game. It's unnecessary and gives a bad example. Dark Souls was good enough, now I want FROM Software to make something different.

The only stuff that looks bad is the IQ. This at proper HD (1080p +) with all the necessities (AA/AF) will look amazing.

They didn't even finish dark souls. I think they have at least one more of these in them and hopefully it'll be the best example of their work.

I want a new Zelda that's like the old Zelda I love but new but not so new that it's too new, but we can't always get what we want.

Yep that's a Souls game alright. Looks like they are bring back pickup health items? (the healing stone)

Can't wait, give me more souls. The original Souls creative guy is working on something else (hopefully not souls related). Win win IMO.

The weight in the animations of the previous games seems somehow...lighter. That's my bigesst grip right now, let's hope is because it's early and not because they want it that way.

I just finished watching it. I think it looks great. Pretty much what I expected, a sharper Dark Souls with higher production value. Should be awesome. I don't have many games I'm looking forward to currently, but this is certainly one of them.

Well, Hidetaka Miyazaki is working on a brand new project that has nothing to do with the Souls series.
