Big LOL at anyone who thought they were gonna dumb it down.

Don't like how dark it looks but hey, I have 1000 gamerscore in Dark Souls and love it so I'll be all over this on Day1. Just please no Blighttown-esque area.

Downloading the video now, gonna try my hand at making some more GIFs of this. Requests?

Blighttown was a really cool area in terms of everything but framerate.

It looks like they've made duel-wielding viable (new animation for attacking with both weapons) and I like the inclusion of the short bow (looks like it has a faster fire-rate than bows in the previous games). I'm hoping this will lead to a lot more variety in terms of viable character builds/weapon choices.

Bu bu bu bu dumbed down for casual babbys. It looks glorious and I can't wait! I'm especially impressed with the bump in visuals.

Not really sure how I feel about it at the moment.

So much brown and orange. I know they only showed a few areas, but I was hoping to see more variety. I'm confident the final game will have plenty, Demon's and Dark were both quite varied in locations. I just wanted to see some now.

I kind of hope every little thing is tweaked slightly just to help the game have its own identity. As great as many of the sound effects were in Demon's and Dark, I hope they don't blatantly reuse lots of them. I like how the bonfire effects are different, moving through a door looks and sounds different, and the death of that one large enemy looked cool.

I wouldn't mind seeing a familiar NPC or two from Demon's make a return purely as fanservice, like Patches did in Dark.

This is pretty much how I feel as well. Dark Souls had some really beautiful and varied environments, and while the team is probably barely halfway through development, the dark halls and muddy colors in this preview didn't really do much for me. That bridge with all of the dragons soaring overhead looked awesome, though.

I'm going on gameplay-trailer blackout until release. Will watch promotion trailers tho (those 1-2 minutes trailer). Otherwise, I need to know when spears are shown. That, I will watch. Silver Kniight Spear was so frigging epic, it changed my view about spears forever. I always thought spears sucks and are lame (in general, not only Dark Souls). Not even 300 could convince me otherwise. Now I love Spears. <3

It looks somewhat equivalent to Dark Souls on the PC after Durante's mods (with better lighting probably). Gameplay looks largely unchanged, which is good news considering the "Oh God, he's going to make it casual!" fears that were swirling after the original guy got taken off the project (or never given the project in the first place, I forget).

I need this game inside me.

I'm pretty underwhelmed. I'm not just feeling it. There's no feeling of oppression. It doesn't look as sadistic as as the previous games. I want it to treat me like bitch. Spit on my face. Just treat my horribly. Be unfair. Be dangerous. Take a big rock and throw it at my balls. The enemies look way to easy. The traps doesn't feel dangerous or scary at all. I want it to feel like I'm searching for the bathroom but find the torturing dungeon instead.

It doesn't like look like the game was designed by a person who knows the joys of pain.

I wish we could have Miyazaki back. :(

Some people were going into this refusing to see anything but failure. It's a shame, as here on the hype train it's a party all the time.

I don't know if my eyes are deceiving me but the graphics looked really good and way better than Dark Souls (I have Dark Souls on right now on my PS3.) So either it's the PC version or my eyes are just tired (or PS4 version.) But besides that the game looks amazing. I was actually one of the doubters but this footage put me back on Day 1 list.

Havent played the game myself (yet) but I sure hope the PC game doesnt have the huge graphic artifacts this is showing. Aliasing and crappy dof are strong in this one.

The choice of color for the lockon is questionable. No idea why they felt the need to change it. Other than that, can't wait.

Pretty much, shouldn't be too hard porting PC version (which I believe is what they showed in the videos using a 360 controller)

No way that's PC version. Looks like standard issue 360 version (why would PC version have 30 fps lock?). If that's PC...paging Doctor Durante!

Sweet lawdy lawd this was so damn good!

Looked so familiar yet different enough to make me feel kind of intrigued and worried. LOVE IT!

Did the current-gen games have motion blur? It looks really good in this video. There is also depth of field, and I think I saw parallax mapping.

That part with the flying creatures and bridge is awesome.

Just got to watch it now. Looks great! Honestly looks about the same in terms of graphics, but that's fine with me. I though the shooting the dude through the grate was one of the most interesting parts. But what I really loved was that dragon skeleton. I did not see that coming. Very reassured by both the gameplay and the interview. And the walking animation looks fine to me :D

It looks a lot better than Dark Souls 1, I am impressed and so I think it's the PC version.

You mean the PC version is locked at 30fps or that the IGN video is 30fps? That is different. If they lock PC framerate and resolution then that would be stupid again.

If people really think it looks bad then yeah Durante has some work to do I guess...

While I think that Dark Souls melee combat feels mighty fine, I can't help but think how utterly simple it is one-on-one when it comes down to it. Especially against humanoid enemies.

Lock-on -> hug enemy tightly and circle around -> backstab -> watch canned animation -> wait for him to get back up. rinse and repeat.

I remember getting the feeling towards the end of my repeated Dark Souls run on PC, but it's been on my mind again because I have the fresh comparison to the much superior melee combat system of Monster Hunter. I actually wouldn't want to lose the lock-on nor the canned backstab (feels so satisfying!), but I keep thinking about how they could improve those basic mechanics while still using it.

Ehhhhh.

I'll have to agree to disagree here.

Not that I dislike monhun combat.

I don't know what it is about the aesthetic, but it feels a lot more... European to me for whatever reason.

And you didn't from the other Souls games? Miyakazi has spoken at length about how he wanted to give Demon's Souls a very strong medieval European feel, like the Fighting Fantasy and Sorcery! gamebooks that served as his inspiration.

The Good:
  • The UI looks much improved, very nice looking.
  • This game definitely seems to surpass Dark Souls in terms of creativity and variety. It's not half-heartedly borrowing its content from Demon's Souls. There's some creativity poured into this. I love that, and am very surprised/impressed.
  • The environments look beautiful, almost like the world is painted.

The Bad:
  • The lock-on target is disgusting and jarring. Hope they tone that down.
  • The character models look really plasticy, another thing I could see being fixed though.
  • It seemed too easy in combat, but who knows. I can't really judge yet.
  • DID I SEE INSTANT-DEATH BULLSHIT BLOCKING PATHS? IS THAT WHAT DUDE IS INTERPRETING AS THE 'DIFFICULTY' THAT PEOPLE LOVE THE SOULS GAMES FOR? DIFFERENT WAYS OF DYING? I ONLY WANT TO DIE WHEN I FUCK UP. YOU BETTER NOT. YOU BETTER FUCKING NOT. FALLING BRIDGES? INSTA-DEATH AXE THROWS? YOU BETTER...YOU BETTER NOT RUIN THIS.

Overall, it looked good. I didn't expect to see the content looking so different in terms of environments and enemies. That is fantastic. I am a little worried by some of the things I saw though...

The architecture was already European, wasn't it? Anor Londo is basically a big European castle, Sen's Fortress is reminiscent of fortresses in Europe, etc.

Everything felt a lot cleaner I think. There's really no sense of decay and filth in the portions they showed. I'm sure there are seedier parts of the world though.

Dark Souls was very European in the human-inspired architecture. What other impression did it make on you, if not European?

Undead Burg, The Depths, Sen's Fortress, Anor Londo, Ariamis, Duke's Archives, The Catacombs, it's all clearly European.

Actually, I can only think of the Izalith Ruins being inspired by something else (South East Asia).

And I'm sure there's also going to be a healthy dose of just straight up fantasy environments, just like in Dark Souls. :)

There was something more otherworldly that made me feel like it has that distinct Japanese twist. I guess the clearness of the graphics is part of it yeah. This seems like a more straight forward European fantasy look so far.

Haven't gone through everything yet, but did the hard-hitting journalist inquire about a PC port and the quality thereof?

They should just hire Durante, it would be a good PR move for them.

I mean it's 30 fps lock since framerate goes even lower than that sometimes (but only for a very brief moment and it's not a drastic drop). Perhaps I'm wrong, maybe it's the way that the video has been recorded.

Overall, if that's a PC version, I am very unimpressed with graphics. On the other hand, it looks quite good for a console version. Guess we'll have to wait for an official statement regarding the platform demo ran on.

To be fair, the same sort of instance happened with the first dragon you see in Dark Souls. How was I supposed to know he was going to light the entire bridge on fire the moment I stepped on it? lol

The axe was not blocked or dodged. There are very similar "insta-death" occurences exactly like this in Dark Souls and Demon Souls. More specifically, if the player gets careless, like this guy did, and just begins swinging his sword around at absolutely nothing like a complete moron...

So really, do not worry about this at all.

Cause you played Demon's and your Soul Sense was tingling. I saw that shit comin immediately. I still ran out there and felt the burn.

I think you're being delusional.
I don't know what Dark Souls have you played, but this looks on par in terms of traps and trollish nature.

Enemy damage was probably toned down for the demo, since they were determined to go from one specific point to the next and STILL, some enemies like the dwarf, one shotted them.

If I am not mistaken, Miyazaki's ideas for the game are based on what he the thought of European myths when he was a child. He didn't have the full picture of the foreign mythology so he made up the parts that weren't clear to him. The souls game are really composed of an odd mixture of European, Japanese and whatever he thinks of.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
I liked the bad frame rate of Blight Town, it really added to the difficulty of the game! PC users got off too easy.

I wish they would include an area with a bad frame rate here too.

The bridge, they say, there's a way to get past it without dying (they say this in the video).
The Dwarf, you can deflect the Axes, by hitting them at the right time (or dodging, i'd guess).

Seems fair to me.
