Adam Orth no longer with Microsoft

The stupidest thing I've seen somebody ruin their career over was Facebook-related. There was some guy who passed the exams and got into the RCMP in Canada, then decided to put up a picture of himself heiling a cake in a brownshirts outfit on Hitler's birthday. They kicked him out of training, and a job that had pretty good pay and stability.

God I am sick of people not being able to take responsibility for their actions. Maybe Orth is, but his defenders on twitter don't seem to grasp that concept.

It is always somebody else's fault.

More like they're just sabre rattling with one another because they feel they could be the next person professionally undermined for not watching what they say in a public feed on Twitter.

May as well demonize us now as part of a "just in case" protocol. Even if it was Adam that sunk his own ship.

"The Internet... why would I want to post there?"

The other variable that's in play here is that we live in the era of "Zero Accountability, Somebody Else is Always to Blame".
I'm not an idiot. I'm not a bad parent. I'm not an employee that violated an NDA.
It's society. It's Internet radicals. It's those Western developers failing to bang a Metacritic score. It's Al Qaida. It's always something else.

I don't really see anything wrong with the situation in broad strokes, but individual people always take it too far. I don't think it's cool to start posting the guy's personal info so people can harass him. What's the point? How is that at all constructive?

On the other hand, his tweets were pretty boneheaded and most certainly have created a big headache for MS, so to me, it seems perfectly legitimate for him to lose his job. I just wish people wouldn't go to such lengths to dig up personal attacks against those who make internet mistakes.

Who's doing that?

Those entitled terrorists voted EA for worst company. Fuck them, I hope Dragon Age 3 gets released with a shit-ton of on-disc day-one DLC and pre-order bonuses.

Seriously now, I agree with the last paragraph of your post.

Seriously? An executive goes on a public rant about a multi billion dollar product from his company before there is a single official announcement made. He seemingly confirms a controversial feature without giving any mind to the company's marketing strategy. He openly antagonizes the company's customers over said feature. He associates his company's product with having a shitty electricity provider. AND a shitty cellphone network. I bet that made Microsoft's marketing team super happy.

So he gets fired and it's supposed to be everyone's fault but his own?

Pretty much. The gaming industry seems intent on making its customers out to be its enemy.

You just don't understand the industry man! You haven't been on the other side of the internet! (Not that I doubt getting shit from the entire internet isn't completely fucking horrible. I hope to never be on the receiving end...).

You bring up a good point. Considering how quiet Microsoft has been about this whole thing, having guards checking who goes in and out at their building (from what I've heard) and telling employees to lie to their other project managers about what they're working on, Mister Orth saying all this stuff doesn't seem like it meshes well with what MS had in mind.

It usually is for people who don't hold positions like "creative director".
I feel you on that.

well yeah, but if you cause massive damage to the company you work for they aren't at liberty to keep you employed. if you work for something that has visibility, you can't presume that you'll keep your job if you act like an asshole towards your clientele online.

he's been pushed out the door for things that were clearly his own fault, that I think most sensible people could see were actions that would likely cost him his job. i'm not sure how much pity the guy deserves.

I don't disagree with Stump, that doesn't excuse grave dancing, but unless you're someone who pities anyone who ever lost a job irrespective of why, there's no sense in feeling remotely sorry for him. now someone possibly more deserving of that job can fill it.

He was an asshat, yes. He should have kept his mouth shut, yes. Did he cause massive damage to the company? That remains to be seen. He definitely brought a massive amount of attention to them, that's for sure.

It's just that I've seen people not get fired for worse but after thinking about it some more, yeah I can see how his actions justifies his attrition. It could have gone either way, really.

In all honesty though, in every industry someone gets screwed and someone doesn't. It's a matter of the proportion. Gaming is no different. However, xenist's post is right on the mark. I'm surprised someone finally brought one of the issues as to why he resigned up.

Then again... we have stuff like this as well in the industry. Sort of disheartening that this kind of discussion/interaction is going on. Makes me sad not as a gamer but as a person. Ugh.

Although, my interactions with various executives and upper management employees (particularly Sony) from the industry has been mostly positive.

God I hate Cliffy B such a dick. Which he would just shut the fuck up and people would stop posting his terrible opinions on everything. Doing anything to keep his name in the spotlight while fishing for work.

Dude doesn't have to work another day in his life.

How is humility such a hated trait in today's world?

With how far science has gone to show how little people know about well, anything, and how an open mind is really important, it's incredible that guys like Kevin Dent and Arthur Gies can refuse to admit to be wrong about anything. People are wrong about most things, smart people learn from it, what the hell is wrong with guys like Gies and Dent and all the guys like them.

Winning an argument isn't really that important...

You make it sound like people with an ego or who are always on a mission to be right are pure evil or something.

Is it really hard to fathom that such personalities exist.

I listen to Rebel FM so I have a pretty good idea of what Gies is like. I've met heaps of people like that, they usually get on peoples' nerves but like any bad trait it depends on how the other traits mitigate it and a bunch of other factors. They certainly aren't completely ostracized or burned at the stake or anything.

Wow, didn't see any of the Dent stuff till you posted that. Do people just not get how Twitter works?

or the customers seem intent on making the gaming industry their enemy

Also true, there's definitely animosity on both sides.

Though to be fair, the customers aren't the ones trying to sell a product to the gaming industry.

Yeah, Adam Orth as a representative of Microsoft 1. Responded to rumour and speculation 2. made disparaging remarks to customers of MS products.

It's not difficult to not do those things as an employee, and it's not anyone else's fault if you do.

Basically all I get out of this is that:

a) A dude working for Microsoft in the business group that is releasing a super secret project made some shitty analogies in a joking manner on a topic that was heavily connected with the super secret project.
b) some people at neogaf thought he was important, looked at his bad jokes/comments on the future of tech and jumped to some conclusions. The conclusions themselves seemed convincing given rumors.
c) "uh oh, the dude thought. I dun goofed"
d) gaming press gets a hold
e) dude fired.

Moral of the story. Don't talk about anything that has even a hint of any connection with your company, whether you know anything or don't. Don't joke, ever. Especially don't make shitty jokes and exaggerations--because not everyone attempts to get the whole story and look at situations with different lenses about a situation. Doubly especially don't actually voice opinions that piss off a lot of people.

I blame both sides, and I think the situation ended up as it probably should have. Although, funny enough, MS might have ended in a better situation because of it (if the new 'leaks' are true. Maybe some people here actually feel like they accomplished something, and should pat themselves on the back).

No it couldn't have gone either way. It was the perfect storm of bad PR for Microsoft; confirming negative news during a period of radio silence in the run up to a multi billion dollar product launch and insulting potential/existing customers will and should get you fired.

I am Korean.
Ah shit, I agree with Gies. Now my moral compass is all sorts of screwed up.

The internet didn't get Sweet Billy fired.

Sweet Billy posting damaging info about his employer on the internet got him fired.

Just because Gies is paid to be a misinformed jerk on Twitter doens't mean everyone can get away with it.

"Microsoft does not comment on rumors and speculation." -- How can you work in the Xbox division and not have those words etched into your brain? ...that's begging to be made into a meme.
