EDGE Bungie article.

The Bungie article in EDGE 171 doesn't seem to have got much comment here. Its an 8 page article about the running of Bungie, its intergration or lack of into MS and the pressure Halo3 is putting on the team.
There are nuggets that really stand out in the interviews conducted the most revealing is Chris Butcher
"Halo came togehter in 4 -5 weeks polishing period at the end. No more than that. Thats the period in which we really had the perfect storm. The team was all there, everything was working great, the entire game came togother in that period. One of things thats stuns me when I think about and I can't beleive its true, we had none of that for Halo 2. Take that polish period and completely get rid of it. We miscalculated we screwed up, we came down to the wire and just lost all of that. So halo2 is far less than it could and should be in many ways." "Even the multiplayer experience is a pale shadow of what it could and should have been if we got the timing of our schedule right. It's astounding to me. I ****ing cannot play Halo2 multiplayer. I cannot do it. And thats why I know Halo 3 will be so much better."

There is a fair amount of criticism of Halo2 amongst the the Bungie staff. F O'connor admits the ending was abrupt and they drove off Thelma & Lousie style big time. He admits that Bungies vocal and internal, interdisciplinary self analysis can be its own worst enemy. Basically that had too many cooks buggering around with the story and design. They actually state that they "polished away some of the rough edges from the game" that made it distinct in the first place.

The pictures show that the shop floor has as many whiteboards as computers, they are everywhere and plastered with notes, as EDGE puts it the Whiteboard is mightier than the email. If anyone has the article feel free to add its massive and I have things to do, like work.

thats really interesting to hear about halo 2. concrete release dates can be a huge obstacle to games i guess, but for major releases like the halo franchise, they are somewhat of a necessity.

i cant believe the criticsm butcher has towards halo 2's MP. bitch as much as you want about the campaign (it certainly fell behind halo 1's in some regards), but the MP was incredible. it will be interesting to see just how kick ass halo 3 is. hopefully they've overcome or will avoid some of the pitfalls they faced in making halo 2. from reading these comments and hearing them discuss how they simply didnt have time to really flush out the brutes (from the latest vid doc on the marketplace), i have really high hopes.

Even with their tribulations they made my two favorite games of all time. I really want to read that!

i preferred Halo2 to the original.

I thought the original was a fairly unimpressive, average shooter hyped by the fact that its on a console. Over time, i came to appreciate the weapon balancing (although the sniper pistol is the only one you really need), and the shield recharge mechanic.

In single player, and especially muliplayer, I think Halo2 is a far better game.

I read that article, it is indeed excellent. Quite a lot to type though and my copy of Edge is at work!

It might go up at Edge online once the next issue is out next week.

Why am I suddenly hyped for Halo 3 so much?

Because you are falling for the same type of hype as for Halo 2.

'oh, we didn't have enough of whatever for the previous Halo, things will be different come next sequel'

Fans eat it up everytime.

Bungie, put up or shut up.

Instigator indeed.

Every dev ever does the same. There's always something they would've done differently after the fact... Or wanting to include something in the sequel that was dropped because of time constraints.

I don't really consider myself a 'fan' or anything tbh (though I do like the games). Also, I already got 'hyped' for the game before this article, even though I hardly follow anything on the game (except for what gets posted here on GAF).

So, that's why I'm wondering. Maybe 'hyped' isn't the right word to use. Getting excited/enthusiastic is more in line with what I meant.

It doesn't surprise me. Watching the 'Making Of' special edition thing, it looked like mayhem. Utter chaos and mess ups all over the place. Halo 2 disappointed me quite a bit, and I really hope Bungie has pulled itself together and isn't twitting about with "people come in when the want to work!!" nonsense.

But I mean it. :)

I'm looking forward to Halo 3, but it's very cautious anticipation. And Bungie does talk too much for its own good.

The thing that's weird about the Halo franchise is how entrenched it has become in such a small time. The first one was frankly not that great compared to the best shooters on the PC.

And the second one is widely considered to be inferior to the first.

So how is Halo3 now one of the most hyped games of 2007? Is it just brand recognition? Is the series really that much better than other big-name series?

Hmm, seems like we need a 'Why is Halo so popular' thread? Quick, go make one lest someone beat you to it!

i finished this article up on the shitter last nite. i thought it was really good, even though i'm like -23333333 on the halo fan list. i hope edge produces more articles of this calibre, because they've been slacking a bit.

The flexible approach is about to become very important, because Bungie is looking to expand. The studio, currently standing at just over 100-strong including contractors, has just completed its biggest hiring year ever and intends to keep growing fast, partly to sate 360’s tremendous hunger for assets. Partly, but not entirely. With likely less than a year of Halo 3 development left, and the end of this monumental trilogy (though not necessarily of Bungie Halo games – Ryan at one point refers to “the next Halo game” and says it will likely be a shooter) in sight, the germination of new, original projects is already underway. Bungie is about to undergo its biggest change yet, bigger even perhaps than the Microsoft ‘merger’ (as Greisemer insists on calling it): the move beyond being a single-project, single-IP studio.

Just got done reading it. Lots of great stuff about the studio. This nugget about Halo 3 has me pretty excited:

Bungie staff won’t talk specifics about the game, but it’s not difficult to goad them into generalised gushing. Greisemer says “it feels more crafted” and hints at some radical new ideas, while O’Connor reckons the strength of Halo 3’s singleplayer will be in its sheer scale. “Even now, you can go into the most primitive, poorly-polished encounter in any of the levels that are actually populated, and it feels better than the way you remember how awesome Halo was. On that first level there’s a moment when you’re in combat in an epic encounter, and also you can see over a ridge to another epic combat waiting for you to arrive at it. You can do something more amazing over there that you can see being set up for your arrival.” Adds Greisemer: “In Halo, there was a lot of smoke and mirrors to make it feel better, but it was not epic combat, really. Now when you play Halo 3, it is.”
I've been hoping the announcement trailer hinted at the increased scale of Halo 3. Look like that's the case. :D

While I want to see new stuff from Bungie, this didn't work out too well last time with Bungie West and Oni and all. Maybe being in the same general location will make a difference.

I didn't know Jonty Barnes is working at Bungie now. Crazy crazy. I remember when he was working at Bullfrog! Goodness, those were the days.

I would like to know who started that Halo 2 sucks because it caught on like wild fire. Personally I loved the game and it took that for me to really like Halo as I didnt really like the the first one. I really dont understand much of the criticisms being leveled on it especially the ending. It went on forever and set you up for the third. I didnt feel cheated at all and if anything thats how you do a ending because it really has me looking forward to part 3.

I like good games on any platform....

Yes, I think that, as a group, Sony Worldwide Studios does an amazing job....quality wise.....but I still love me a good Xbox game now and again......I have always been a Halo fan, especially :)

Are you ****ing high?

Halo was hands down the best console shooter to date when it was released, both for single and multiplayer -- it still stands up as one of the best balanced MP shooters, on any platform, in history. Halo 2 MP is fantastic -- and still heavily played today.

I think it's safe to say that Bungie has pretty much "put up"...

It really just seems like they are trying to diss halo 2 and try the 'admit our mistakes' and the 'we promise we will make it better because we know where we messed up' tactics to garner up hype for halo 3....

and its working lol

its still the truth though
