Three new U.S. Wii U commercials

These commercials are much, much better than what they launched with. They actually try to differentiate the U from the Wii. So, from a marketing standpoint, I think they're a success.

It is still unclear what they are selling. They can't sell it in these 30 second commercials

They've surpassed CG PS3 Baby commercial.

A step in the right direction but ugh, so obviously forced and fake as fuck. The second-hand embarrassment is too much.

Just fucking show a kid playing in the living room with the parents telling at him/her that it's their turn for the TV and expecting some prolonged, frustrating waiting game when the kid then immediately agrees and switches to off-screen gaming, shocking the parents.

If they keep on with idea of upgrading, this thing could be monumentally successful.

Well, one of Wii U's main problems is that it has no mass-market hook as easily understandable, intuitive, or appealing as "your motions translate to motions in the game!"

Nintendo probably should have realized that before they designed the entire system around the Game Pad, but hey, here we are.

They had a hardcore market pre-Wii? Everyone I knew thought the GameCube was the "kiddy" console. If you wanted "mature" games like Halo or GTA, you didn't own a GameCube.

Contrary to popular belief, Nintendo didn't leave the hardcore behind; if anything, it was the other way around. They made the same great games they always had, titles like Super Mario Galaxy and Donkey Kong Country Returns. "Casual" titles like Wii Fit sat nicely beside games like Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Mario Paint, GameBoy Camera, etc.

That said, I do think they need to work on their image in the industry. Regardless of whether or not it's based in reality, third parties and gamers don't think of Nintendo as supporting "core" games, and Nintendo should try to address it however they can.

This is spot on. If nintendo had of released a similarly spec'd console in 2005/6 with standard controls, it would have been a capitulation. The irony of the situation, is that they have released a similarly spec'd console in 2012 and it heading that way.

Make an ad trying to show it's a different, new console - don't show the console, show a father and son playing using the old Wii mote. Nice.

they go beyond that:
1. "nintendo has something for everybody"
2. something for the youngest kids to play, the tablet is easier
3. something for dad, graphics are good
4. something for the family, we all get to play together
5. something to make you think it's a trending device in demand, "friends had one. we had to go look at it"

the fact that they don't spend any time showing off why the device is really good for the mother, i think it's a commercial made for mothers. these are all very important selling points for mothers. i don't know where they're showing this commercial yet but if its somewhere with an audience primarily made up of moms, i think it's a brilliant commercial. it is really crazy how efficient it is.

They released a similar spec console to a generation coming to an END.

Releasing a similar spec console to next gen consoles would not give these results. So stop with this capitulation nonsense.

Humbly disagree. For this to even remotely happen, it means that this mother has to watch all 3 commercials and understand what is happening, and why thus is any different than the iPad she bought in Christmas that has been collecting dust as its no different than the iPhone she bought last year. They're bold to even sell it as an "upgrade" when they should be selling it as a next-generation console; a new gaming platform that all the original Wii owners would like and enjoy.

Its a very ineffective commercial. I don't even think they'll air it. I hope not. They need a new marketing strategy and should be willing to spend money on 1 minute commercials with more content than ever.

Its a much better commercial overall. Although, I may be biased since I know the differences. I have a hard time looking at it from an unknowing consumerist standpoint.

Maybe they're waiting until Wii Fit U is out to target mothers more specifically.

But yeah, the end of that third commercial (Haskins):

Dad: "We're all kids again, playing video games."
Mom: "It's important for them to have that as part of their childhood."

Wow, damn. They're really hitting hard on the 'family bonding experience' selling point, using language from other family-oriented mother-targeted advertisements. Very clever.

They remind me of Walmart commercials.

Yeah, exactly.

I think it's funny that some people don't think these are decent commercials. Everyone was complaining that they weren't conveying how the WiiU was a different console than the Wii, and now that they are people are still saying they suck. Makes no sense.

Did they also rename the console? The odd name is the real problem.

This is a bigger issue than the odd name:

It's very hard to tell the difference between the physical consoles. So every advertisement that shows the "Wii U console" looks exactly like a Wii U controller being played on a Wii.

This febreeze style ads only work for products where you can see the result in 30 seconds or less. But hey, whatever; Nintendo knows best, correct?

It looks like Fisher Price ads to me.

Family on the couch enjoying their Nintendo Wii, while kid sits in an arm chair playing his Sega GameGear... Wait what?!

The Wii-U is such a weird contrast to the original Wii. The Wii feels like it was designed to be a family fun machine straight from the get go... here the Wii-U almost feels like it is more designed for an individual user than a whole group of people.... Sure you can append some controllers to the machine, but there's still only going to be one person using the Wii-U controller at a time.

Nobody would purchase a Nintendo console priced similarly to what the ps4/720 will be. It would alienate the family market more so and nintendo does not feature at all in the minds of the "core" gamer.

It would be loved by the "hardcore" gaf gamer of course.

I would imagine that third party support would quickly find that mature titles would struggle to find traction.

I watched all three and don't remember seeing what the actual console looks like in any of them. Everyone playing on Wiimotes with one person on a Wii U Gamepad made it feel like the Wii U "upgrade" is just the Gamepad. Terrible marketing.

They need to stop advertising the actual console and start advertising the actual games on it, Games sell consoles way better than the current ads. Didn't the Wii have heaps of Wii sports advertising?

The commercial only fills one gap of the many that Nintendo's initial marketing left during its initial salvo of ads. We still don't know anything about the games. We only see the perspective of families with children, so other demographics see these ads as pointless, and we still don't know enough about the platform.

The ads are a small step in the right direction, but there's a long, long way to go.

Where's your proof? If you cannot back this statement, you are in no position to say this.

Let me remind you we have never even seen such console exist nor have we seen the PS4/720's price tags. So I'm interested in where your evidence is coming from.

Edit: PS4/720 would be in the same war when it comes to selling at a high price. If one or both of them take off and Wii U continues to die, this immediately debunks what you said.

It's a commercial clearly trying to sell "family time". It is trying to show why the Wii U fits into the household as a unit to bring the family closer together. Family time is becoming a huge selling point to mothers now that there has been so much research done on the potential health benefits. Kids who spend time with their parents are healthier! They do less drugs! They have a higher IQ! This stuff is shouted @ the rooftops to mothers. The commercial removes any and all similarities to an iPad. It completely differentiates the product. I couldn't find a reference to playing Netflix and apps away from the TV.

It is not a mass market commercial. This should not air on the Super Bowl. It has a place in an advertising mix though. I think this is a great strategy from Nintendo. Way better than their "let's air children and dubstep on the Comedy Central" strategy.

Thats a 5 person game where the person with the pad has a different role and view screen within the multiplayer game. It's pretty awesome actually and odd that you would have the completely wrong idea.

This issue is probably never going to be fixed.

The Wii U truly is meant to be an upgrade from the Wii. Nintendo of course is going for new audiences still, but fact remains that many people already own Wii consoles with Wii remotes and will be able to enjoy family content on Wii U without having to buy additional accessories (necessarily).

I think the idea is just shocking to people (everywhere, but on NeoGAF too) that the new game system has this kind of compatibility with its predecessor. The Wii U is more of a transition than a "leap" and this is hard to get across in marketing.

Comments disabled... lol

Just terrible. Nintendo needs to get it in their heads that watching people play games is NOT exciting for an audience.
