Iwata to become Nintendo of America CEO, NoA CEO promoted to NCL Managing Director

Iwata Nintendo is best Nintendo. And I've been around since the NES days.

So basically, it's a 'yay' for me.
It would be interesting to see age groups and how happy they are with Iwata. For me, he has done nearly everything right. I love his approach.

Wtf, this is a horrible move :/

It's the japan-centric design and mentality that will lead to Nintendo's downfall, so instead of giving the US-side more say - they take charge of it.

Iwata Ceo of Nintendo America? Are you fucking kidding me? I can't see how this will help, even though it should. I don't know honestly how it could be positive, considering how insular and Japanese centric Iwata's Nintendo has been. . .This is not what I expected. . .

Surely the WiiU having parity with the other new generation consoles would ensure support.

Surely.
Well Soul Calibur II was the last Soul fighting game to show up on a Nintendo hardware and it was only on the one with power.

I think that says something.

Also, Factor 5 jump ship when they saw the Wii had bomba hardware.

Dude, you could play as Mario in NBA Street V3! What the heck were you looking for? Online play?

Oh man, so many GameCube versions of games didn't have online because you could literally play MS and Sony against each other and get them to pay for implementing online in a game. Nintendo didn't moneyhat so a perfectly working online mode would get ripped out by a publisher from the GCN version. Nintendo's lack of leadership on the online matter with their own games sealed the BBA's fate. I mean freaking Sega was the main online developer for the GameCube. Their former competitor.

Brera - you can only contact Nintendo through Miiverse.
They have you.

It's the japan-centric design and mentality that will lead to Nintendo's downfall, so instead of giving the US-side more say - they take charge of it.

The US side has been floundering and lacking direction whilst NoE does just fine (and obviously has lots of freedoms). This myth about the US being some kidnap victim needs to stop.
NoA is not a franchise holder; its a subsidiary of Nintendo.

my favorite thing about the Hardcore Golden Era™ of the gba was how i could rebuy snes and nes games at a lower resolution, worse music, at a $25 price point and the ability to get powerups by buying an add-on and swiping cards on it, and that constituted a major part of nintendo's handheld release schedule because they never released an original mario game on it ever

It definitely makes a difference in some cases. Namco seems to want to support Nintendo when possible. We did just get Tekken Tag 2...

Him and Dave Meltzer are the same person. He constantly comes into every Nintendo thread to troll, just ignore him.

On topic, the best way to tell how much of Nintendo's issues revolve around Iwata is to do this test run. Hell he may still resign if sales don't improve as he promised.

Just because dave and I share the same opinion and like wrestling, doesn't mean we are the same person! He continues to post while I was banned ;-)

Also, disagreeing isn't trolling.

If I were to use your definition of trolling, I could say the same about the people gojng on about how awesome Iwata is.

Newsflash, he ain't. Telling the truth is now trolling?

If he's so awesome, why is the 3DS fubar, underpowered and undercooked.

Exactly the same as the Wiiu. Why are they taking heavy losses? Why is the Wiiu struggling despite Iwata "growing the market".

If he is so awesome, why ain't he getting job offers from EA or bobby Kotick?

I'm pretty sure the thinking is "Well, I'm in charge in Japan, and we're doing really really well over here, so I should probably be in charge of America too."

I don't see how it's a bad idea, other than Iwata will be a very, very busy man now.

Yeah, just sweep the two consecutive failed hardware launches, pathetic infrastructure, and embarrassing software lineup under the rug. Ignore him being directly responsible for the biggest losses Nintendo's ever taken as a company. Ignore that fact that he has disregarded 3rd parties to such a degree that they openly LAUGH at the prospect of ever truly supporting Nintendo hardware.

Clearly none of that matters.

We hate Iwata because he loves casual games. Yep, that's it.

Well the infrastructure is vastly improved, and there is no issue making friends, buying games, playing games online, and Miiverse is still such a simple, yet UNIQUE idea they get a pass from that one me.

But it may not be for you.

The hardware and software yep, he definitely mismanged that. But if you're running a company and this is the guy who gave you the biggest profits in the history of your company, of the INDUSTRY, who's vision inflated the gamer group so much that without that same success the industry can't HELP but shrink, and who made competitors basically add their numbers together with PCs to post a positive spin on their earnings month to month, yes you give him a chance to make it right.

And 3rd parties. You can't FORCE them to make the games, you can't make them do it, so either they do or they don't. If they don't you put a plan in place to fill in the gaps, which he is trying to do. So no I don't fault him for it, they simply don't want to make games for the system.

And yes a lot of this bitterness and nuttery comes from the fact Iwata is the poster child for casual gaming in the first decade of this century. And for how badly casual gaming thrashed the hardcore many still hold weird grudges.

Pretty much. I've seen it now with even bloody NSMBWii vs NSMB2/NSMBU.

I'm looking forward to the day someone holds up WiiWare over eShop, at which point the internet will collapse into some kind of ironic event horizon.

Wah? Must be totally different people. The haters left and some of the lovers (me) got bitter with the new releases.

I think haters just go away or move on after awhile and lovers for something like Wind Waker have space to speak their thoughts and agreements without the opposite opinion immediately showing up. I don't think Wind Waker got immensely more popular today than 2003 though. Same with GameCube.

You should go face, man. It would be more fun to see you and Meltzer duke it out.

I'm not sure how anyone can see this as something negative. Japan gets to experience the absolute best "version" of Nintendo, and now Iwata is in charge of America. What exactly is so awful about this? That Nintendo's next home console will be PS4-ish hardware-wise?

Looks like Iwata don't trust Reggie anymore. E3 2012 was a cornerstone, and as an ex marketer this event Reggie led was a serious professional fault. And it was not the first, nor thelast one.

With the last game, Capcom even admitted the console couldn't handle the title screen.
Sonic Generations for Wii got canceled because it would have looked like crap.

Really? You love paying to 'upgrade' ROMs to play them again on an over-priced underpowered underselling device that barely competes with devices released 7 years ago?

You like the complete lack of interesting new IPs instead of iterating on the same 3 franchises ad infinitum?

You're happy with business shakeups because of low sales and everyone running around like their head is cut off because they don't have a consensus of why the Wii U is selling worse than the GameCube?

You're happy with how they tease you with Earthbound, but won't launch with it?

There's nothing you'd change at all? You're happy with the direction the company has gone?

Afew things wrong with this post...

Firstly, those ROMs? I can still play them as they are when I purchased them. I would only be paying if I wanted to add functionality to them that wasn't there 6 years ago when I first bought them, which in terms of basic economic logistics goes, makes perfect sense.

Secondly, I don't know what you're talking about when it comes to iterating on the 3 franchises. They make more than Mario platformers, Zelda games, and Metroid games. I have been playing the shit out of Fire Emblem: Awakening, Luigi's Mansion got its first sequel in over a decade, and we're getting a new Mario + Luigi RPG in afew months that, by all accounts, seems pretty fantastic. Of course if you are one of those people who assumes everything branded 'Mario' is able to be shuffled under the banner as a single IP, you're pretty blatantly ignoring that those characters are used in plenty of different genres and game types. What new IPs they do create, they put out on the eShop, and they seem to have received reasonable success. The reason we don't see them as full retail releases though is because people tend to not buy them because they don't have Mario on the box.

Well, Iwata's recent statement today that "The WiiU isn't selling because there's no compelling software yet" seems like a pretty simple and straight-forward explanation. So I'd say they have a pretty firm grasp on where they're at right now. You think they're seeing these numbers and pulling a Macaulay Culkin and screaming in shock at these numbers? As if they had no idea this was coming?

They just said Earthbound was going to be coming to the VC... Available for the first time in Europe ever. That's not a tease or them coyly poking at the idea; that's literally them saying "Hey, we're going to put this out, just let us get our service figured out."

There are obvious things people on this board would change about Nintendo's own policies regarding digital sales etc, and I agree with them. There are obvious UI issues with the WiiU, and I agree with them. There are obvious cost issues with their systems, and I agree with them. It's not like this company is without faults that require reassessment. But as far as I'm concerned, as someone who owns multiple systems, Nintendo is still putting out interesting software that I'm excited to play, and that doesn't look to be changing anytime soon. So... yeah, I'm overall pretty happy with them right now.

Im failing to see how this is a change to the worse. Was this guy that nobody has heard of doing such a great job ?

From what I read on GAF NOJ was basicly managing NOA anyway so wont this be more like removing one step of the beurecrazy ?

Instead of Iwata managing the old CEO (forgot his name) managing Reggie now Iwata is managing Reggie ?

Arrest me if I am completely off base here.

Or it could help, Nintendo is very Japanese centric but I think even Iwata knows Western support is a must, if Iwata shaves off some of the Japanese and be's aggressive to get Western support it could work, Nintendo could also get the big Japanese games as well, getting Final Fantasy and Monster Hunter 4 on Wii U would help, with a non mmo Dragon Quest 12 (I expect DQ11 to be on the 3DS).

Fuck this.

I'm emailing Nintendo.

Haha, this is wonderful.

I have no idea whether this is a good move or not. At one point, this demonstrates that NoA has been experiencing some difficulty in its management. However, I do wonder if adding more responsibility to the CEO of Nintendo is an appropriate response. In all, we really do not know what the content of this transfer will bring, but I hope it is for the better.

What is even more interesting, however, is that there are people who think that they definitively know what is going on at Nintendo and precisely how to fix it. As observers, we hardly know what's going to be released in the next 6 months, let alone how management hierarchy works at Nintendo. Troll away you mighty warriors!

He isn't going to tell investors that they simply made a huge mistake.

I think this is great news. I'm sure this will lead to an actual marketing plan for the Wii U and I hope that it will also result in games like X being released near their japanese date in North America.

In a sense the entire situation makes me wonder if Reggie has in fact had a lot more clout and autonomy than most people thought.

The typical story is NOA as puppet of NCL, but this shake-up almost seems as if Iwata is coming in to put Reggie under far more scrutiny. As if Reggie really had been allowed to directly dictate Nintendo's marketing and product decisions in NA.

There is a chance those games could have come to Wii if it was on par w/ PS360, but no guarantee. We didn't get any GTA on Cube and Chinatown Wars bombed on DS, so that's real iffy. Irrational has no desire to work on Nintendo systems - power or no power. Nor does Crytek. All the others, I'll grant you though.

But yeah, it's more than just power at this point. It's a combination of that + poor relationships + kiddy/casual image.

Edit: Almost forgot about online infrastructure.

Yeah, it almost feels like they're getting rid of a middle-man here.

Alas, this is a feeling and not a known entity.

What a misleading-ass title. Read the press release, people. Nothing is really changing here. It's just Kimishima returning to Japan and Iwata taking over any of his NOA responsibilities in addition to Iwata's current role.

Last I read, it was doing better than the DS in the similiar timeframe. I guess it depends how you look at it.

The 3DS had a better launch than the DS, but it is currently selling much worse than the DS did at a similar point in its lifespan. Worldwide current 3DS sales are disappointing. Hopefully, this year's strong lineup will turn it around, but that has happened yet.

3DS won't ever reach DS numbers. DS will remain the absolute most successful handheld for a while or maybe ever.

Fuck up. Fuck up again. Have zero insight into reality, continue a vision based off 2003. Get promoted and have people cheer about it.

Way more entertaining than it should be.

It seems like there was something released during the 6th generation that came between Soul Calibur 2 being on the Gamecube and Soul Calibur 4 skipping the Wii that suggests there might be more to it than you are thinking.

Some kind of mystical third game.

Might just be my imagination.

Also, Factor 5 jump ship when they saw the Wii had bomba hardware.
And consumers jumped ship when they saw that Factor 5 had bomba software :p

If Iwata is NoA president he should have to deal with our delayed localizations and colors. I don't want to see him walking around with anything but a red or blue xl and not playing bravely default until 2014

But that's exactly what the thread title says?

Damn, what's with all the meta-hate with Reggie.

Don't you know? He personally decided games weren't getting localized and that we aren't getting more 3DS colors and stuff!

Considering how games have to sell more copies than ever, I think it's almost guaranteed publishers would have done what it takes to get those games on Wii if there was power. It just would have been a Gamecube scenario where if certain games bomb, they'll hold back on some titles. But money is money.

Chinatown wars was a different from other GTA's so that's not really a good comparison.

I have to find the article but I recall Crytek did want to work with Nintendo but the hardware held them back.

Hmmm...hard to say one way or the other, but I think this could improve the number of releases we see in America. I still kind of wish they could get Howard Lincoln back on board. I mean, he's not too far away with the Mariners.
