Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

Maybe I am naive, but I am not sure how the same sources could know the current state of first party development and the actual state of games of both MS and Sony

Remember folks who are buying a PS4, these exclusive maybe timed so you may not miss out anyway. Bioshock, Mass Effect and etc are examples.

So, delay them until the Spring, and rely on third parties to draw customers in at launch. Could work with some good exclusives.

Or, just release a bunch of rushed games, wouldn't be the first launch with rushed crappy games (though I doubt they could rush them enough to make up that much time).

Well, it did take them almost six months to release features for Halo 4 post-ship that Bungie had working in Halo 3 and Reach from day 1, so sounds about right. Six months behind schedule and coming in hot on everything.

even though I agree and am just having a good laugh at it all for fun, someone in the industry might have a bunch of friends working with other companies so they might hear things. Doesn't have to be ONE guy got all this information from himself.

The usual Microsoft modus operandi; if you can't do it yourself, buy it.

More like if you can't do it yourself steal it from apple. But that doesn't work in consoles, unfortunately.

I'm not a big fan of third party exclusives for any platform... i'd rather make the decision of what platform I play something on than a publisher decide for me because of money hats. But i'm especially shy about getting excited about a microsoft platform because of third party exclusives after this gen when they went after them hard for about two years and then basically became a DLC beta testing ground.

I keep telling myself i'm not going to fall for it again but I'm just stupid enough to end up with a durango around launch. :/

That rumor makes no sense.

Especially when they've apparently been planning a successor console since 2010. I can see titles not meeting their expectations and being delayed/scrapped. I just don't understand the sense of scrambling to put some kind of launch window list together given how many studios under their banner must be in full operation for next-gen.

I really thought that the one benefit of this generation going on so long would be that everyone had plenty of time to get their shit together for day 1 of the next one. At least Sony seem to be on track.

Sony probably started much sooner due to the shock of the horrible performance of the PS3 at the start of this gen.

i have no problem buying this. there's probably a shitload of pressure on the teams to create the new Halo and the new GoW. too much pressure, shits falls apart.

This seems fishy to me...

What sort of person would have information on the status of the complete portfolios of both MS and Sony? No third-party devs or publishers are privy to this information, they are only aware of the games they are working on, and just given knowledge of how to work on the platforms. Only the higher-ups at MS or Sony would know whether their portfolios are ahead/behind, and unless these higher-ups between MS and Sony are sharing notes, which is unlikely, I'm not so sure this could be trusted.

Plus, who the hell cares as long as there is a great launch, and post-launch portfolio? Maybe they wanted 30 games for the launch and can now only get 20. Or maybe some of the games they are working on just weren't fun.

There's just so many variables here, that it's not worth getting up in arms about until after E3 when we know exactly what the launches are going to look like.

It would be expected for Microsoft to shop around for 3rd party exclusives, I expect 1 or 2 big studios releasing an exclusive game for MS, they just don't have that 1st party support Sony has going into next-gen.

I wonder how big a check it takes to lock down big exclusives now days. I'm guessing they just pay off the entire development cost and commit to XX millions in marketing as I don't think just one or the other would cover it anymore with every AAA project projected to move like 10 million units.

It's not really that fishy. Reports have been for a while that Sony is in very good shape for launch development-wise.
A source knowing where both MS and Sony are for both hardware and software is fishy any way you slice it.

Unless this source has sources that have sources that have sources that further impact the reliability of the rumour.

they have the money to buy some very top tier exclusives so if they are going to panic it will be something amazing to see
i don't see how it would be amazing to see. how does buying exclusives affect xbox purchasers? the games would have been coming anyway, right? the only people it affects are pc/ps4/wiiu owners.

Role reversal? How can it be!

The cockiness/arrogance/curse of 3rd console continues!

Precisely. Feels like MS is stepping into the cocky shoes Sony were in, in 2006.

Sony being humbled this generation was a blessing in disguise for them and their customers.

depends if it's a timed exclusive or a forever exclusive. Remember how much MS spent on the GTA4 DLC alone? That was redonk. Not sure if that was confirmed or BS though. Either way, expensive.

I would seriously doubt this. All the rumors seem to be pointing to the Durango being a Windows 8 box. That means it supports Direct X, so your code is just gonna run on the Durango without any porting. There is no way that won't make up for months of porting and optimization moving to even something as close as the PS4 is to pure PC architecture.

Looking at the list of studios included in Microsoft Studios I would think they have enough developers to do lots of games, but it's actually the talent I'm more worried about, as several of the studios haven't really done anything yet.

What are some big indie developers open for money hats?

Insomniac?

Gearbox?

There was that rumour they where working with IO interactive but it got canned. Maybe they have a Edios game in the bag?

Sony ahead in both software and hardware? Quite the role reversal compared to the PS3 and 360 if true.

In terms of launch? Not really. Sony's software was certainly slow out the gate on PS3, but throughout its life, has pumped out far more quality titles.

Some companies probably need money to actually make the game. So in those cases, MS would be funding for a game to be created which would not have been otherwise. Especially if the game required a large budget.

I'm calling bullshit on this. Rare, Lionhead have been working on software for years and I'd assume it's all aimed at next gen. Ruffian, Remedy as well, they've been years in development for what I'm assuming is Durango related games.

Whats fishy about it? Its likely a multiplatform dev.

Thats not unlikely.
A multiplatform dev wouldn't know much about hardware development at all, maybe a little because of some rough roadmaps but I imagine both are still tight lipped on a lot of that, let alone first party software development.
