The Last of Us: New Previews

Awesome how Joel's hands when aiming with a gun recognizes the wall when you are to close to it. He then moves the holding gun towards his chest automatically. Incredible detail if you ask me because I'm not used to this.
(have no experience in making gifs, so I rather show it per screenshots)

I have certainly seen it in a few games, first and third person, but the animation quality is what makes it stand out.

Haha nothing is wrong with me miss Chopra :p Just getting ready for the backlash the game is eventually going to get on GAF.

Personally, I can't complete horror games as most of them rely on making you feel claustrophobic to get the chills. That's why I thought Alan Wake was such a big missed opportunity. But I like this game's approach to survival horror. But it's still early to judge, so eagerly waiting for the it.

Of course, like all Previews - they're ridiculously over-the-top in compliments.

I liked Uncharted 2 & 3 - but I'm looking forward to a game from Naughty Dog that isn't set-piece-to-set-piece with everything I touch breaking or falling (with mundane shooting mechanics).

I'm excited for this game - the inventory/combine system looks fantastic, and if the kills are far more intense, avoidable and/or riskier - the game will be fucking amazing.

I wish these articles had an option to disable pics, I want to read impressions without having to see a ton of screens. (edit: lol now there's a ton of them on this page)
Anyway, I only read the videogamer preview because it seems to be the most negative and he had a few issues that from what I can tell haven't been mentioned in other previews: he said the aiming felt off, inventory management was too cumbersome and that the game seems to be too hard.
He didn't mention listen mode which is my biggest concern right now. I wonder if it's turned off on higher difficulty levels.

Anyway, I'll just have to stay out of these threads, why people want to see the whole game before playing it is beyond me.

Disagree with all those. Aiming's fine to me, although bullets don't have the usual impact. Inventory management? I presume that's referring to the gun selection that works like Half Life, really. Too hard? Hmm, not really. The demo's really pretty short, too.

Kinda sad about the immersion killer sequence CVG spoke about in their video. Hopefully not too much of those in the final game.

Otherwise it looks pretty fantastic.

The first game I've played that I noticed this sort of behaviour was Far Cry 3. It was outstanding and very noticable when taking cover and moving around. Very realistic and helps the atmosphere.

We have gaf impressions pretty much saying the same stuff.

I guess he is talking about the crafting?

the two preview levels are taking from two different points in the game. They sent those out so that people can judge the game mechanics and technical aspects..
We have no way of knowing if the game will be "set-piece-to-set-piece with everything I touch breaking or falling (with mundane shooting mechanics)." because this is only a very small part of the game.. I compliment what I like, and criticize what I don´t like..

This wasn't directed at anyone particular.

Merely an observation that previews tend to be overly positive - almost certainly due to the fact that the preview footage/gameplay is handpicked by the developer to emphasize the strengths of the game.

I'm just saying - if it is a set-piece crawler with by the book cover-shooter gameplay, I'll be severely disappointed. As it stands - it sounds awesome.

But Alan wake didn't really have that many closed space, as far as I remember.
Extremely excited about this though.

Don't like how it looks more game-y than I AM ALIVE. Being able to see through walls. That upgrade skills system that doesn't make sense with that world. No stamina to worry about.

Gameplay may be not all that, but at least the world looks well-realized like Alan Wake.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

Yup, I love that. MGS4 did it too.

Another negative raised by one previewer, although I expected this one:
it must be said that the enemies in the preview code always respawn in the same place in the same fashion every time. They are clearly stage managed for dramatic effect, but if that's the case come the final build, it may hamper replay value.

The demo's really good. Tons of atmosphere. My only real disappointment is that bullets still don't have the impact you'd expect from a game of this ilk.
That's too bad. Hated this in Uncharted already.

Here's my piece on it: http://nextgengamingblog.com/blog/the-last-of-us-preview-3/

Really, really impressed. Naughty Dog have squeezed so much out of the PS3, the game looks incredible.

Edit: The aiming feeling loose is probably due to the fact that the targeting reticule doesn't stay in one spot, you've got to time your shots quite well

Nice preview, but don't write sentences like that:
However, The Last Of Us looks like it’s going to be a step beyond that, and has the potential to be the system’s final true masterpiece

There are still more exclusives coming out (maybe even in 2014). So it is too early to say that ;)

I'm thinking I will play this game on the hardest difficulty from the get go to maximise the tension (something I never do). I hope there is an option to turn off listen mode but if it's mapped to a button I guess not. Shame because it is a much harder discipline to ignore a button for an entire game than just toggling a tick box once and being done with it. I at least hope they put in a trophy for beating the game without using it.

It would be nice in a hardcore mode where pressing that wallhack button doesn't do anything.

Achievements related to not using it would be hard since it's an actual button that you could accidentally press.

I'm supremely excited for this game (having loved Uncharted 2 and 3), but still apprehensive; I realized a few years ago I really hate playing scary games. The post-apocalyptic setting and fights with human scavengers with ND production values sounds too good to resist, but those infected are gonna fuck me up. =(

This is in a lot of First Person games now (Starbreeze games, Call of Juarez, Far Cry 3, dozens more), but yeah I guess not so much used in 3rd person games.

Another truly interesting thing is the survival aspect: bullets will always be scarce, and soon you'll find yourself exploring every house inch to inch hunting for loot.
Not just for the sake of it, but because you'll seriosly need stuff to survive.

Other than that, i came in with HUGE expectations, yet i was fucking BLOWN AWAY.

CAPCOM, are you listening?

I just wish the wallhack outlines weren't so crisp. A vague white blob in the area (size depending on noise/presence) would be sufficient for you to locate enemies, while still keeping it unknown what kind of enemy it was, what direction they're facing, and what weapons they might have.

Cheers :) I know it's probably a bit of hyperbole, but I was honestly that impressed with it, ND have really stepped it up a notch. In terms of tech, gameplay and (I certainly hope) story, it's going to take some beating for quite a while! I can see Beyond pushing it for tech, that's for sure...

Vegetation in this game is a big leap over the uncharted games. Great density.

Seems about the same and just as static.

Also enemies spawning in the same location is a bummer and I had a feeling there would be people less than enthused about the listen mode wall hack. Instead of a silhouette of the enemy they should have made it cover an overall area.

As far as reviews are concerned, this won't get universal praise; I think ND are taking far too many unconventional steps in the design of the game for it to be universally loved.

Personally, I love everything I've seen and cannot wait to try it.

Edit: abbreviation fail

Will there be a demo?

there is the GOW demo (the one that unlocks a week or so before the game is in the shops).. I guess that is the exact same demo the press has played..

the backgorunds are a not as static as before. If you touch branch on a tree it will actually move.. there are lots of small details all around.

About those enemy spawns. I have played the demo 4 or 5 times.. and some of the enemies are not spawning at the same point. the Clickers are standing still at the same positions, and other enemies to.. BUT, the human enemies in part 2 of the demo, actually acted alot different everytime I died or replayed that section. They carried different weapons, and moved in different directions.. it actually surprised me a bit.
The wallhack perimeter can be enhanced (by using pills you find to upgrade your talents).. it covers an area, and tha can be enhanced. If there is an enemy inside that area you will see it as a silhouette.
